Yes, Nest is a tad bit pricey. I will agree with that. But a lot of what they have is from local artists, and some of it is vintage. I expect items like this to cost a bit more than I am comfortable with. Thus, I wait for sales. There is stuff here worth waiting for sales. Also, it is fun to just browse. They have some really big art pieces that change and I like to go in to see what new they have on display.
It feels almost like a museum gift store. I mean that in a nice way. It is a mishmash of art, jewelry, kitchen items, accessories, bedding, etc... My husband was stuck on this device that attaches to your cell phone and it is actually an old school handset phone. It is funky, weird, and not practical, but he wanted it!
I've gotten some jewelry there as well as some whitewashed wooden fruit that is decorative for the kitchen.
I like the vintage feel and it does make me dream about how I would decor my house if I could indeed afford this stuff at full price :)
So come and at least browse! Heck, my husband likes it too!

The husband and I first came by to just check it out and like others that have written reviews, I was a bit taken aback by the security at the door. I didn't remember the Boston one having security, although it must have. I guess because it was noon on a Saturday and there were little children all around, that the security seemed funny to me. As others mentioned, it just seems really excessive. There is also a dress code. While I appreciate what they are going for, again, it just felt a little intimidating. No do-rags, tank tops, big sunglasses etc...It just sounds snotty to me.
Once I got past the uppity feel, I did have a good time. A group of us came to check out and bowl. We decided to go at 11am on a Sunday, mostly because I wanted to make sure we got a lane. Just know and be prepared for if you go during the day on a weekend, you are going when everyone brings their kids. (I still can't understand why people bring their 2 year olds to bowl with big balls. Really?). I like a light ball and all of them were taken by kids. I found one and held on to it. Yeah, I stole a ball from a kid. Hey, the light ones are hard to come by!
Despite all of the kids running around, the bowling is fun. There are many screens over the lanes. Some showing sports/ESPN, some showing commercials and funny things. The screen for our lane would show funny videos and cartoons after someone bowled and we had a few laughs at that.
Jenny's review has the pricing, but during the day it is cheaper. $5.50 per game, plus $3.50 shoe rental. Decent enough. Where they get you is the drinks and food. YOWZA!! We didn't order drinks or food. We instead waited and went out to lunch afterwards. The prices are super high, and again I understand why (reasons similar to a movie theatre), but I probably will never pay those prices while I am there.
There is a restaurant on site, and a back room to wait if you are waiting for a lane. There is "Shuffle board" (not your grandparents kind), mini bowling lanes and a few arcade games (Big Buck Hunter. I know a lot of you will be excited about that). There are several bar areas, so if coming at night, it won't be hard to get a drink.
So the bowling is a good time, I will be back, but I would be happier if the security piece was toned down a bit (although I understand that they need to check ID's.), and the food/drink prices were lower.
People tell me I was licking things, hugging people, screaming about a lot of things. I don't really know.
What I do know is that my ghetto hoop earrings are missing and that I probably had a Yelp t shirt in my grip, but lost it on the ground only to have it stolen by someone else.
Oh, yeah, Meg. You ARE sexy.

Anyway, the food! My husband loves the panini's. The first panini I got was okay. It was the "Carmela Soprano" and it had mozzarella and egglplant. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for eggplant (decided after I ordered) but the taste of it didn't connect with me and I ended up taking out most of it. It had a batter over it and whatever that batter was, I wasn't feeling it. But the quality of the sandwich was there and if I had been in a better mood, then perhaps I would have scarfed it down.
I have also had plain old sandwiches there. I had a proscuitto and mozzarella type sandwich that was pretty decent.
The sandwiches are quality, and solid as stated above, but I like a more "bakery" sandwich shoppe where the bread is fresh made (they make their I think, but that is not what I am talking about), and it seems less of a standard operation. Think Fornax in Roslindale.
The other thing to note is how slow they are. Other reviewers have mentioned it and they are right. The first time we went, it was a busy night. There were a lot of take out orders. But we sat there and sat there and sat there as take out order after another was picked up and prepared. We were eating in the restaurant, so we shouldn't have to wait that long. I feel like the service can be hit or miss, but for me it has never been overly prompt.
Again, I will probably go back, because it is a good option in West Roxbury with not a lot of other options around it. I just don't run out my door to get it.

I love the decor of this place. The bar area out back isn't as spicily decorated, but the restaurant area is sassy. Yes, your typical Mexican decor, but when there is a wicker skeleton with boobs, you end up liking it more than your typical Mexican restaurant.
What you come here for is the sangria. Peach, watermelon, regular, whatever your pleasure. My husband loves the peach. I do agree it is good sangria. But I do think it is a tad pricey. Middle of the road pricing. A half pitcher that is supposed to support 4 people is $20. But you will find yourself needed a few pitchers to really satisfy your sangria craving.
Their homemade guacamole is fantastic. It is made right there in front of you and is super tasty. The nachos were also pretty good, but I would have like more cheese.
The entrees are very pricey in my opinion, so I have really stuck to appetizers and sangria when I have been here. I like here, I like the ambiance, and the food, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to get here. But, if in the hood, and with good friends, then yes, let's go!

Yay for Yelp! I came to Sophia's Grotto after reading Tracey's wonderful review. And I am glad I did. Although the BF's mom lives in Roslindale, I had never really ventured out to Roslindale Village. It is charming, with many restaurants that I now want to check out. They have a great wine shop and a cheese shop too (see my reviews). Anyway, on to Sophia's. I love, that it is tucked away behind a large black gate through a brick laden "street" past the back doors of various shops. So cute, and cozy already. The place is kinda small, so make your reservations!
The decor is wonderful. Very old world Italian looking (as this is an Italian restaurant). The cutest thing? The kitchen area looks like a little house complete with a tiled roof! Love it! The brick walls are also an added bonus. I love me some brick walls. There is a chandelier in the middle of the room that looks like flower petals. And to top everything off there are vintage Italian movie poster. Federico Fellini posters! The bathroom is covered in mini posters of Italian movies from the 40's-60's.
I can't even remember all the items on the menu, but they all looked good. I got the fish stew, which was succulent and fresh. A couple people in our group had the gnocchi which they enjoy. I got the house Sangria to drink, and honestly it was good, but not the best sangria I have had. I think there was a little too much ice in it and it was watered down. The chocolate cate that we had for desert was moist and soft. Very good.
The bread basket. I always like it when a restaurant does something different with the bread basket. The same old boring hard bread and butter doesn't cut it for me anymore. Sophia's delivered with the bread. The bread itself was fresh and soft. No butter here. We got a spread that I am not exactly sure what it was. But it was really good.
The service was a little slow. Apparently we were there for 2 hours although it didn't feel that way. I was okay with the service being a little slow. It didn't bother me much or effect my overall feeling of the place.
So, good food, good company, good location, and good decor. That is a 5 star review for me!
My friend Amanda has orgasms over Chill's smoothies, but I have only had the fro-yo. Their original flavor is a bit tangy, a little cream cheesy (to me at least), a little fruity. A lot like another place I will not mention. One time I went their flavor of the day was coffee, which was not so good. I couldn't imagine eating it in mass quantities (I just had the free sample) as it was too sweet and not coffee tasting at all. I have also had the banana flavor.
The first time I went I did get a winning combination. Original and banana flavored fro yo, with melted, hot peanut butter and fresh mango toppings. Yum! Banana and peanut butter are always a winning combo. It is unique to see melted peanut butter as a topping, so that was a great thing for me to try.
The second time I went, I have to say that my mango was a bit dry. It seemed like it had been sitting out too long. It was fresh, but dried out. It was still yummy goodness.
The have various fruit toppings (blackberries, bananas, kiwi, mango, raspberry etc...), some cereal toppings (fruity pebbles like the other place that shall not be mentioned), nut and chocolate toppings etc...
I like having my fro yo much better than ice cream. So, when in Brighton to visit some of my favorite friends, I always want to stop here. I will continue to go when in the neighborhood! Chill is much much better than any old ice cream place. Have fro-yo instead!
Go with a game plan. It helps. Our bride knew what designers and colors she wanted. We scanned the racks and could see that Manhattan had everything organized by color, not by designer. It produced a bit of a groan amongst us and we at first started sorting through each dress. Then we figured we'd just ask the staff to find us what we wanted. They brought out the catalogues of said preferred designers and we pointed to the style we wanted and they went and helped us. We still ended up sorting through the racks and until the last minute were pulling new ones out to try on, but with the help of the staff, the process did go smoother. The staff was very friendly and very helpful.
Their selection is pretty good. I think it could be better, especially with different styles, but we overall found what we were looking for. We could tell what style worked on each of our body types and then went from there. But again, their on site selection could have been better, but I can't complain too much because in the end we all found what we wanted.
I actually found the exact dress that I saw in the catalogue and online that I wanted. It was one of the few that they had on site. It was a "the one" moment as soon as I tried it on. Checking out, getting sized and filling out the order was pretty easy. To note: they said it can take 6 months to get your dress, so plan ahead. I know from experience this process can always be sped up, but you'd rather be safe than sorry.
Because all 3 bridesmaids got their dresses there, they gave us a discount. Even better! I spent $138 on my dress and it is a dress I can wear again. Not too bad at all.
I can't advise on wedding dress shopping here, but bring your bridesmaids!
We have now been there a few times because the pizza was that good.
As with a lot of people, my standard for pizza is that it is not overly greasy, uses fresh and quality ingredients, and doesn't leave me feeling like I ate a tub of lard. Pizzadoro's fits my requirements.
They have a selection of your "normal" pizza's like meat and veggie, and then they have a selection of "Gourmet Pizza" choices. Some gourmet options are Parmesan Chicken, Aegean, Fajita, Eggplant Parm, Chicken Pesto etc... So, creative and unusual pizza. They also have cold and hot subs, pasta, some burgers etc... But it is really all about the pizza.
We have had the veggie, meat lover, and cheese. I know, not that exciting. We will be back to try some of the gourmet options, don't you worry. The thing about the meat and veggie was that the toppings were fresh. The meat lovers was overloaded with meatballs, bacon, pepperoni, sausage, etc... They did not skimp on the toppings. My husband couldn't believe how much meat was on it (and he was happy with that). My veggies were not soggy and old, they were fresh and crisp. I love the crust on their pizza too. It is a thinner crust, but still crunchy enough to get you your crust fix. As I stated above, it is not a greasy pizza either. The bottom of the box is not all grease and your hands don't look like you've dipped it in a vat of oil.
Bottom line is that this is quality, good pizza. The prices are fair for the quality as well. As to be expected, the gourmet pizza's are a bit more expensive, but I am sure they are worth it.
If you want to eat there, they do have a large seating area as well.
Welcome to the neighborhood indeed.
Date

I first came here in the off season. We stumbled on it and didn't really know what it was all about. The ice cream was not in season, so we settled for lunch in the country store. The store had souvenirs, candy, and some locally made foodstuffs. They also have some sandwiches and lunch items, which is what we settled for. Good stuff. We made a note to come back in season.
Come back in season is what we did and boy, I am glad. Fun times!! We came here with 2 of our friends (we, being me and my husband) and started out with food first. They have an outdoor food area with some fried seafood, corn on the cob etc... I had already eaten some, so I just had the corn on the cob. It was good. Very soft and buttery, but a tad expensive (it was like $2 or so for one piece). Our friends had fried clam strips which did indeed look delicious..
Next, was mini golf. I am a sucker for mini golf (as is my husband who self admittedly took all of his dates there in a past life). That too I felt was expensive ($11 per person). 18 holes. I won! Yay! The mini golf course was pretty fun with some creative holes. There are 2 courses to choose from.
What was next, you ask?!?!? GOATS!! I love goats. Love them. I can't explain it, but I do. I don't know what kind of goats these were, but they all had really fat bellies. They came up the fence and let me pet them. Yay!
Next up, the arcade. This was the place for the boys. Since we came with another couple, I had to laugh at how excited the boys got. It wasn't the best arcade in the world, but better than your carnival type arcade. We had some fun playing the games.
Save the best for last right? Ice cream! Isn't that why a lot of people come here? It was swarming with children and the line was long, but we all wait for it. They had a fall special with apple pie and such which was so good. The servings are humongous. Our friend got a small which was the size of most large ice creams I have seen. Just the right thing to wrap up the day.
There is more! We didn't get to the batting cages but plan on going next season!
