Chow
Category: American (Traditional)
Neighborhood: Castro
What I like the most about Chow is the quality of the food. Denny's is great - especially for it's $5 gut buster breakfast - but for a couple bucks more I had a gorgeous Eggs Benedict with fresh sauce and tender sliced ham. The potatoes were real - no square taters here - and crispy and great!
The girls had food that they ooohhed and aaahhhed over but I was having to much pleasure with mine to really notice what they got. Food, like good sex, is so much better when it's savored.

There were three of us and we were seated in the front window. I love to watch the people walk by; blue mohawks and mismatched flip flops and karate uniforms.
We shared the halibut ceviche, spinach and crab salad, and what my friend calls "pulled pork" and came with rice and beans and fresh tomatoes and sweet potatoes. I loved the flavors. Clean, fresh and extraordinary.
As usual, my friends took good care of me and I don't know all the names of things but, our waiter was wonderful; attentive and explained the options.
The place filled up quickly on a Friday night and every dish that came out was a little piece of art - which leaves me one smiley girl.
I live in Oak Lawn and my tranny was clunking and starting to not shift right. I took it to a couple local guys and they wanted $2500 to get started.
When I called Donny he explained how the tranny worked. Diagnosed the problem. Explained what he thought it was, etc. He told me what the basic price would be - which was about $1000 cheaper than my local guys - and also that if there was metal in the transmission when they opened it up, that there would be other charges.
His openness and time to explain everything was enough for me to make the drive - it's about 20 minutes down the highway.
He was great. Getting the parts he needed for my 15 year old volvo took a little bit longer than expected but, they pushed it out in a couple days.
It's been a few months now. My tranny is quiet and smooth and I am not worried about getting stuck anywhere.
I am also about $1,000 richer for that 20 minute drive :-)
I have my own cute little suite, with couch and tv in the living room. A darling kitchen with stainless appliances and granite counters.
My bedroom is full of a king bed and another TV, nice large vanity and bathroom.
It's great. I feel right at home.
Took a long run this morning along the American River. - Just go straight down 15th till you get to the light before the overpass - cross to the left side of the street and continue up the overpass - on the left you'll see the path along the river.
Breakfast is very middle america - lots of options but not much nutrition. I had scrambled eggs and some yogurt and hot tea.
Great little place on the cheap but doesn't feel cheap.

Lucca Restaurant

I had mixed green salad with bleu cheese and strawberries - very tasty.
I LOVE their crunchy french bread with real sweet butter, you know I could just live on great french bread and a nice pinot and be very happy.
I did, of course, drink their pinot all nite - I forget which one but my waiter, Andrew, made sure I was happy.
Dinner was Salmon and garlic mashed potatoes. I like the salmon just a bit crunchy on the outside and the inside almost rare - they got it perfect!
Dessert was a tiramisu kinda thing. It didn't really do it for me but, I was already very happy as I entered the warm night and retired to my suite.
I just went here for happy hour with friends. Kat made me a really great pomegranate mojito and then friends made me stay and chat outside on the patio. It's a great location on a warm afternoon and the sunset was gorgeous.
When the sun went down we got chilly and moved inside. We shared a wedge, pizza and crab cakes. The food was mediocre; crabcakes were mushy and I am not sure what the orange sauce was, pizza was like cardboard. My favorite was the wedge - with big chunks of blue cheese and tomatoes and bacon, that one I would order again.
The drinks were plentiful and the waitstaff was helpful. It's a modern decore with three bars - two inside, one out.
As we were winding down, a band was setting up and the 20 somethings were filling the place.
Perhaps it's more of a bar than a restaurant.

Crush Wine Shop
Categories: Beer, Wine & Spirits, Wine Bars
I am intimidated by "wine shops". I chunk them all into wine snobs and they will see what a naive girl I am. But, the folks at Crush are not like that. They make me feel special and the pressure is off so I can just enjoy my wine and conversation.

Cowboys Barbeque & Rib Co
Categories: Barbeque, Jazz & Blues
The servers were cute and smiley as we came in and got us seated right away. It is a Barbecue place so we decided to share the beef and the pork ribs. These came with two sides and bread so I got a potato and mushrooms, while she got a potato, mushrooms and cole slaw.
Our waiter's name was Tom and he did a great job keeping drinks on the table in between all the food!
The pork ribs, dipped in their killer barbecue sauce, were smokey heaven. Tom came back with some bad news; they were out of the beef ribs so, we took the rib tips, instead. I'm usually not a big fan of rib tips and these were not that great - dipped in the sauce made them just ok - that's why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. Everything else was really great, though! I ate a whole potato - loaded - mushrooms, cornbread, mmmm.
Who were we kidding?! We had two full boxes to take home after eating, drinking and kibitzing for an hour and a half.
By that time the place had filled up - great news for a new place on a weekday night! What recession!?

It's one of those cool older theaters with a little funk, that's been restored, so it's even hipper and cooler than today's plastic-cardboard replica of a theater.
I had so much fun sitting in the bar chatting with the bartender, Sonny, watching "The Wicker Man" on their flat screen and sipping my apple-tini while we waited for the movie to start. Cool, mod, newer theater seats, clean, typically overpriced crap to eat while you are watching the movie - it's all good.
Happy hour starts at 5 - I had an appletini for $6 - I mean, how could I not??!!
It could have just been the company but, I had fun and I'm thinking the Magnolia had something to do with it.
