Hotel Monaco
Category: Hotels
Neighborhoods: Southwest Portland, Downtown
I love Kimpton Hotels and the PDX Monaco is among the nicest! I've stayed here at least 4 times. The rooms are pretty spacious and the decor is interesting and fun. The lobby with its tall fuscia walls and eclectic couches and lamps is gorgeous!
The staff is friendly and helpful. Nearly every time I leave the hotel, I'm asked if I need directions or suggestions. I love the complimentary wine & beer happy hour in the lobby every evening. I also appreciate the NYT delivered to my door every weekday and Saturday.
The only reason I'm not giving the Monaco a 5 star rating is because of its location. It's right downtown, on a busy and safe block. However, if you plan to spend most of your time in the Pearl or on Nob Hill, there are more conveniently located hotels (e.g. the Benson). Also, upon departure to the PDX airport recently, I was ripped off by one of the town car drivers recommended by the Monaco. I suppose that's not really their fault, but they are essentially endorsing anyone waiting outside their front door...

Everett Street Bistro
Categories: French, Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Pearl District
We're from Seattle but every time we visit PDX, we eat at Everett Street Bistro. They even recognized us (after nearly 2 months) the last time we were in.
We've been here for all 3 meals and never been disappointed. I love the BLT or the tarte for breakfast and one of the sandwiches and frites for lunch. Consistency is hard in the food business, but Everett Street is always satisfying.
The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is because I'd like to see some new specials. The breakfast special has been the same the last 3 times we visited (roughly July - Oct).

Busy Shoes Instant Shoe Repair
Category: Shoe Repair
Neighborhood: Downtown
I think I must be hard on shoes! Rather, I think my left foot must be hard on shoes! I *always* lose or wear down the heel on my left shoes! Grrrr.
Working downtown, this place is super convenient and reliable. I've taken several pairs of shoes here and he always does a great job in record time. He opens early (I often see him there reading the paper at 8am or earlier) and closes at 4:30. He will do same day repairs, if necessary. I've never paid more than $15 per pair.

Metro Tailoring & Alterations
Category: Sewing & Alterations
Neighborhood: Downtown
I've been looking for a reliable tailor since moving here over 7 years ago. I think Metro Tailoring is it! The woman who owns the shop is super sweet and very thorough. She's done many dresses, pants, and jeans. Once, I wasn't totally happy with a very complicated dress alteration she did (bust was a bit too small). I brought the dress back and she fixed it within a day or two at no extra charge.
I would trust her with just about everything.

Nancy Meyer Fine Lingerie
Category: Lingerie
Neighborhood: Downtown
Oh Nancy! You make getting dressed so fun!
I've been a frequent customer of Nancy Meyer for the last few years. It all started with a gift card. I didn't think of myself as high-maintenance in the unmentionables department , but I was converted. I love the layout of the store, the website, even their business cards. It's such an awesome experience shopping here!
I used to spend my money on shoes, but that has changed since meeting Nancy!

Date

The pros: It is right across the street from the building where I work. A mani AND a pedi is $25 (that's dirt cheap!). I've never had to wait. From start to finish, the whole experience can be done on your lunch hour (and sometimes a lot quicker -- see cons!).
The cons: They can be uncomfortably fast and a bit sloppy, especially on the pedi (I like a more relaxing experience). One of the technicians is particularly rough, like she's getting her aggression out on my feet! Although I wouldn't say this place is unsanitary, the last time I was in they didn't open the bag of tools in front of me and I was a bit worried my feet weren't the first to come in contact with some of the tools! :(
If I'm in desperate need of a mani and pedi and I can't wait until I'm back in the neighborhood where I live with more options, then I might go here again in the future. Otherwise, I much prefer other nail salons.
