A few friends and I went here for dinner today and, as a fan of Mexican food, I really want to like this place. A good selection of reasonably priced food, and the food I ordered was very tasty.  There are reasons, however, why I'm not willing to give them a higher rating at this time...

- What drinks were available?  None of us could find any indication in the menu, but wait... what's that sitting on the next table over?  A drink menu!  One would think there was a shortage, or something.

- I placed my order, and the waiter repeated it correctly as he was writing it down.  When my food actually arrived, though, it wasn't what I asked for.  It was close, but it was still different enough for me to send it back and wait for what I actually wanted.

I met up with some friends for lunch here today, was handed a menu to check out, and was a little wide-eyed at the prices. We all found out later that that was the dinner menu... whew!  The lunch menu was slimmer, but the prices were also closer to what you'd expect to pay for a mid-day meal.

I opted for their BBQ grilled shrimp. The sauce they used was pretty thick, and there was a lot of it, but it came in handy for dipping the sides into.  BBQ steamed broccoli?  Yes, it does work :-)

For a seafood place, they certainly have the decor down.  The service was also rather good, and the food arrived quickly, though it helped that there weren't very many people there at the time.  I'd personally be interested in coming back later in the day and trying out something from the dinner menu, though I feel like I'd have to make it a date to justify the cost.

This place seems fairly dated and, consequently, the rooms seem cheaply furnished.

That's fine, though, for a few reasons. The rooms are also quite clean, and both breakfast and wireless internet access are included in the price.  It's also very close to the interstate. Those qualities make this a good place for an overnight stay when, like me, you're coming from and going to somewhere south of Charlotte and don't want to drive all the way up there just to get a decent room.

It's been many years since I've called Concord home. Nearly every time I come back, though, I can be found at this hotel.

The main reason? Location, location, location. It's right next to 2 gas stations, 2 restaurants, and a fast food joint (if that's how you roll).  Within easy driving distance are a few major stores, a mall, and lots of other restaurants.  Not to mention the fact that the interstate is... well... right over there (*points*).

On top of that, the place is very clean, and the staff are friendly.  If you opt to take advantage of it, there's a free breakfast, which is generally enough to get the day started. The waffles are my personal favorite.

Thinking Man Tavern

Good food, great service, a wide selection of drinks, and a nice tavern atmosphere... that covers most of what makes Thinking Man a great place to eat.  They have quite a few different sandwiches to offer, but I decided to skip that and go with their Dos Burritos, which I didn't regret in the least.  A friend had their Half Jerk Chicken, which smelled terrific and might be my choice the next time I'm there.  For an appetizer, definitely go for the potato rounds.

The service was quite good. Even though it was a fairly busy night, our waitress was checking on us quite often to make sure everything was to our liking. The only issue came when we tried to split our check, but it wasn't a big one... it wasn't difficult to improvise a split.

Now, for the reason that Thinking Man is best enjoyed in groups... the board games. Pick one up on your way in and, when you're done eating, you've got at least another hour of fun ahead of you before you leave.

When I was working in Duluth, and wasn't eating lunch at our in-house cafeteria, this place was at the top of my list. It's still a favorite place to meet up with friends and former coworkers that are still there.

The salad bar offers a wide selection and, every time I've been there, it all seemed very fresh.  The only real problem is resisting the urge to pile too much on the plate!

After the salad bar, there are the soups and breads of various kinds.  The offerings there seem to vary at least a little from day to day, but I've never had a problem finding a soup that I liked (clam chowder on my latest visit), and what comes out of the bakery is always delicious.  Almost invariably, I'll pick up at least a piece of their 4-cheese foccacia.

Happy Sumo Japanese Restaurant I

I've eaten here several times since moving to this area, and it's still my standard place for Japanese food (usually hibachi) when I'm looking for something close to home.  Their hibachi is great, for both eat-in and take-out.  Let's be honest, though... half of the reason to go to a place like this is to watch the chefs in action, right?

Their sushi is good, as well.  I haven't experienced their sushi bar, but I have ordered it along with hibachi or by itself as a take-out meal, and I've never been disappointed.

The prices have apparently gone up for this place over the years (currently $9 for adults in the evenings), but it doesn't seem like the place itself has been updated at all.  It's still the same rooms with the same crap seating, still in need of a good cleanup job.  Part of it may be that you can only do so much renovations within the context of a strip mall, but there are much better movie-viewing experiences elsewhere for about the same cost.

This isn't the closest theater to me, but there is a reason that I go there rather than save a bit of gas.  Compared to the one that is the closest (Peachtree Cinema, or whatever they're calling themselves these days), the Regal Medlock is much cleaner, has stadium seating, and has much better sound... 3 things that help make for a pleasant movie watching experience.  The tickets are more expensive, but I seem to get what I pay for.

As for the concession prices, I can't really speak to those.  I go there to watch a movie, not to eat.

I went to this place on the recommendation of a friend, and was not disappointed.  The sign reads "Mexican inspired cuisine" and, looking at the menu, the description seems to show in the form of a list of specialty items that are fusion dishes.  They do have more traditional Mexican dishes as well.

I can't personally speak to the quality of the fusion dishes, but the more traditional fare is quite good.  The service is excellent as well.  I'll definitely come back there when I'm in town again.
