i moved to the east bay from the city a few weeks and finally ventured over to check out this much raved joint, well, actually i went to the cafe. the downstairs will have to wait. nice decor, great food. i was expecting to have to pay quite a bit for a zagat 26, although i did think that $18 for cous-cous and chick peas was a little over the top. would definitely come back to try some of the meat and fish dishes in future.

for the price, not a bad place to get breakfast. good benedicts, bad pancakes..but again, can't really complain. having said that, they could really do a better job with the bacon since it's such an essential part of a good breakfast dish. i've been here twice, probably wouldn't go back anytime soon unless i'm really pressed for time.

came here for the first time and ordered the lamb. truly top notch food. if i'd never seen the place before tasting the food, i would never have thought that it could come from such an unsophisticated kitchen setup. would definitely come back often. although i would agree with the one reviewer here about the presentation -- paying $25 for food in a cardboard box IS wrong. N. B. all the dishes do not come with any sides and there isn't really a good selection that can be ordered from the menu, just potatoes and um.. potatoes.

ahh.. TRULY med (well, not actually having been anywhere near the mediterranean, that's really just my taste-buds benchmarking against some fantastical place in my mind where the food is really good).

I LOVE TARTINE!!!! simply heavenly. only problem is, the stuff is so rich i can't have more than a couple of small things or one big thing before feeling like i'm debauching. wedding cookies are absolutely irresistible
4 stars for the food which is pretty good.. not quite the portions i'd expected. if you're packing your first grader recess snack, the lunch special is sure to keep him/her happy but it really is minuscule for an adult. taking this into account, this place really isn't all that cheap. keeps me wondering why all the many ``top bangs for your buck'' lists out never really take portions in to account.

stodgy atmosphere, similarly stodgy food -- a lot of pretention, very little substance... and expensive! wouldn't think to come back. i usually think that zagat is pretty spot on but in this case, i have to say, sadly, even that otherwise venerable gastronomic guide is subject to the influence of the `emperor's new clothes' phenomenon from time to time.

the sushi here is awesome. the fish is SUPER-FRESH. definitely the best sushi i've ever had. i never realized how truly fresh fish can make sushi so flavorful until i came here. so, why only four stars? well, i suspect that the _cooking_ may be less than stellar. i ordered the robata scallop and the tobiko sauce on it was mediocre at best, and the scallop was way over-cooked. my oshitashi appetizer wasn't really much to shout about, in all senses of the word, with about a two-biteful portion's worth. would most certainly come back for the sushi, but i don't think i would venture to get anything from the main menu. as for the many reviews below that claim that there are many other better places in the bay area, where are you suggestions for alternatives?
