Maven

Category: American (New)
Neighborhood: Lower Haight

I'm still deciding how I felt about Maven.

I went last night with a couple friends for some drinks and a bite. The cocktails were yummy (probably the best part of the experience) and the food was somewhere near "American Fusion". None of the food was spectacular, but it wasn't awful either. It was...interesting. Filling without being overwhelming. My friend did comment that the blue cheese seemed "too moldy" upon which the chef did not agree (he was nice about it).

Our waiter was friendly, but basically sucked. He spilled beer on the table and rather than clean it up he just said "oops". Ha! He also wasn't around much when we needed him.

Anyway, if you're in the neighborhood and want dinner, go to Uva Enoteca down the street rather than Maven. Hit up Maven for a fun cocktail afterwards.

P.S. It closes at 12am so last call is early

Black Hogg

Neighborhood: Silver Lake

Black Hogg was so yummy!

I loved the oysters, burger (it would be nice to have an alternate cheese option), salad, and fish & chips. The lighting was the perfect dim and it was just the right amount of noisy that you could still hear your dinner mates but not feeling like you're speaking too loud. Great vibe.

2 complaints:
- They need to get a liquor license
- The order of the dishes was rather sporadic. We got the burger before the oysters, and the fish & chips before the salad.

Definitely go, but expect a 15-20min wait because it's a hot spot!

I had a wonderfully delightful and yummy meal at Hungary Cat. The food was perfect with perfect portion sizes and the service was lovely.

I suggest the oysters (obviously) and the monkfish risotto.

The only complain I have is that the lighting should be dimmed and the music switched up to something with more listening appeal.

Cafe Jack is a titanic themed boat restaurant. It's very kitschy which gives it some charm, but the food is gnarly.

Take a photo from outside and then run. Do not eat here.

Peace.

Who would've thought that you could find sushi comparable to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York in a remote village on The Big Island? Go figure that the owner of Sushi Rock is a former Manhattanite.

Be sure and try the homemade local wasabi, Rock Star roll, and Soba Noodle salad.

Support the local establishments!

P.S. One of the waiters look like Jacob from Twilight and will make your heart swoon.

Red O

If you're looking for a very sceney "LA" restaurant (I rarely am), Red O is the spot for you.

I first heard about Red O from Esquire's top restaurants of 2010 and I finally got around to checking it out last night. It was completely mediocre and entirely too expensive. In fact, it's sort of like glorified Mexican food.

Unfortunately, my date and I had to sit in the "garden" tent rather then in the physical restaurant. There was zero vibe there and it was not a garden, it was a tent on the street with heat lamps.

Things I did like: the steak salad, the fun swing chairs at the bar, the "Market Margarita", our helpful server, the tequila tunnel.

The Village Bakery and Cafe

I love a lot of things about the Village Bakery. I love that it's easy to park around there, they have free and unlimited WiFi, the bread and tuna melt are so yummy, and there's always a spot to sit. However, I don't like that the restaurant is over priced, the service is mediocre and sometimes brash, and the coffee is bad.

You should still go though. It's a great neighborhood spot.
