This is a gigantic mother of an airport. I had only 1/2 an hour to make it to my connecting flight, so naturally I frantically searched for where my departure gate was located. To my dismay it was in another terminal. Aw damn son! I scanned the area and saw signs pointing to a sky tram.

Like Texas, DFW is huge and it takes forever to walk through the gates. As I hoofed my way to the sky tram, I pondered how long I would be stuck in Dallas if I missed my next flight. Oh hells to the no! The sky tram was located upstairs and I descended upwards on a long escalator. I imagine that this is quite possibly what it will be like in heaven. Up you go to your next destination and either you take the tram to another spiritual plane or you get sent right back to live your life all over again because you haven't progressed. Or a worse case scenario is that you are reincarnated into a flying cockroach and squished by a slipper. Splat!

I hopped onto my sky tram and was whisked off to the next terminal. As it zoomed around DFW I had a quick aerial tour of the surrounding area. Boy Texas really is huge and there's nothing but wide open spaces. The tram came to a halt and I jumped off to get to my gate located one level below. Thankfully I made my flight just in time and I'm sure if the sky tram wasn't so efficient, I would literally been stuck in Texas. Nice!

I heart Olena! I've been on the KHON2 morning show numerous times and she's always been a gracious on-air host. Although I consider myself a morning person (not really by choice but because I have a baby), it always amazes me that the newscasters, producers and camera men get there at 3 am every morning for work. I have a tough enough time getting there at 6 am once every couple of months so a big kudos to the hard working morning show crew! The KHON2 staff is always friendly, helpful and wonderful to work with and it's nice to know that they're really kind people in real life.

As Nicole K mentioned, the reporters are on Twitter and really consistent when it comes to tweeting out important news and responding back to questions. KHON2 has a parking lot adjacent to the building but there are only a few stalls. It might be better to do metered parking or hop across from Ala Moana Center.

J R's Caps & Embroidery

4.0 star rating
Update - 5/13/2012 1 Check-in Here
It's time for an updated review J R's and I'm happy to say that I've decided to give you an extra star! Located on the bottom floor of Sear's Ala Moana, J R's is where I go to get some costumes embroidered for Yelp events. This time around I dropped off a few sailor hats to get embroidered and J R's was able to accomodate my same day time line.

The girl at the counter was helpful and quick to take my order. Everyone working was busy filling orders and talking to customers so I'm assuming they've got a robust business. The girl helping me showed me my logo and double checked that I was okay with the thread colors. She told me she'd do her best to keep the stitching flat but because of the thickness of the materia, it might be a little uneven. I really appreciated that she was honest and upfront about what might happen. I signed off on the job and sent my intern back two hours later to pick-up our hats.

I'm happy to say that everything came out looking great and although it's pricey at $9 a pop, I felt like it really was the cherry on top of our already awesome costumes. Thanks for the quick work J R's and it's nice to know that I have you to depend on for future orders!

How do you make a cool Yelp party costume?

    1) You make it from scratch with yelpy ingenuity and massive amounts of creativity.
    2) You buy something and embroider it.
    3) You go naked and stencil your body with a Yelp burst.

I chose #2 this time around to make a Yelp gi for a Karate Kid themed event because:

    1) I have three children who make me very tired.
    2) They have sucked out all ingenuity and creativity from my soul. Where do you think breast milk comes from?!
    3) Do you honestly think I have the time or energy to make anything from scratch anymore?
    4) Sorry dude, I've got kids and I'm not a stripper. Naked is no longer an option.

I thought of this ingenious idea of embroidering a karate gi but of course this brilliant idea didn't come to fruition until the ninth hour. I called around to see who could do same day embroidery but everyone needed 3-5 working days. I called J R's and they were able to do it after much begging and pleading.

Located on the bottom floor of Sear's, J R's does custom embroidery on basically anything. Hats, shirts, etc. At first the girl on the phone was not very friendly but in person they ended up doing a good job on the embroidery. She even called me to help match the correct color of red on my logo. They called me when my job was done and I'd have to say my costume was a hit!

$50 set-up fee for logo embroidery but they'll charge you double if you need it in a rush. Yes friends, that's a Benjamin! As I know I'll be embroidering other things in the future and this was a rush job, I didn't mind paying the charge but boy that hurt the wallet. Oh and no website. Get one J R's! It's 2012!!!

Lynn's Saimin & Cookie Shop

Categories: Japanese, Hawaiian

4.0 star rating
5/11/2012
A few weeks ago I made an attempt to visit Lynn's and here is what was written on a soda box that was taped to the window: "Going hunting April 23-May 9 closed." I turned to my BF and said, "Uh, I have to eat there. Who the hell takes a week off to go hunting?!"

I'm going to fully disclose that the reason I'm giving Lynn's 4-stars is because it's so ridiculously cheap. If you are a germaphobe, do not even attempt to go here. It's super old, not very clean, and it's basically a shack. If you look up the word "hole-in-the-wall," I'm pretty sure that a picture of Lynn's will come up. You walk into the shop and there are a couple of tables that seat maybe 20 people. There's a beaten up menu board which lists all their items and I will tell you, breakfast is CRAZY cheap.

I ordered the following:
+$3.50 breakfast special which consists of two eggs, choice of meat and rice. It's $.25 extra for fried rice.
+$3.00 short stack which came with two pork sausage patties (That's cheaper than McDonald's yo!"
+$3.50 for two pieces of fried chicken (This I thought was disproportionately expensive but I can't resist a good piece of fried chicken which I spied in the window.)

Everything came out pretty quickly and the service was pleasant. For the price, I thought that it was a total steal and a great option for doing quick take-out on the cheap. My one regret is that I totally forgot to ask for the cookies. Doh! (Slaps forehead) Parking is all on the street and that's probably the biggest drag.

One of my best friends loves shopping in Waikiki and I completely understand where she's coming from. Unless you work in Waikiki, a trip into the tourist jungle is usually for a special occasion such as a wedding reception or fundraising gala or holiday dinner. Rarely would a local contemplate a trek down Kalakaua for shopping, but honestly it's really fun. At Royal Hawaiian Center you can find Forever 21, Bebe, Juicy, Apple and a few other boutiques. Not as many choices as Ala Moana Center, but much less exhausting.

In addition to shopping, they've got a ton of eating choices with my favorites being Doraku, Wolfgang's Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory and PF Chang's. Doraku and Wolfgang's both have killer happy hours that are a serious steal.

I'm not quite sure what the parking validation is at Royal Hawaiian Center because it's changed quite a bit. But I'm sure it's reasonable as long as you get your ticket validated. We usually buy some gum at the ABC store if we aren't able to find the right purchase. So next time you're hankering for retail therapy, think about making a trek into Waikiki and hanging with some tourists. It makes for excellent people watching!

Lowe's Home Improvement

Categories: Hardware Stores, Building Supplies, Nurseries & Gardening

3.0 star rating
5/9/2012
When they started building Lowe's last year I thought to myself "Oh man, this place is going to be crazy busy." But oddly enough it was fairly empty during my weekday noon visit. I guess people are Home Depot loyal? Maybe they don't want to deal with the odd parking situation? I'm going to give it some time to see if there's a shift.

Nimitz Lowe's is tidy, clean and has a wide array of household and hardware items, much like its sister store in Waikele. It's a huge location and rather than aimlessly search for items, I asked a staff member which aisles held the things on my long shopping list. It was a bit difficult to find someone and I had to walk to the front of the store to have someone answer my questions. I think this is something which needs to be worked on because if there's one thing that switches over brand loyalty, it's customer service. If there aren't any customers, why can't I still find someone to help me? I'm a woman in a hardware store, trust me, I've got loooooooots of questions.

After loading up on about $300 worth of items I went to the register where I was frustrated to find that there weren't very many cashiers on hand. I waited a good 10 minutes (I know first world problems) to get rung up and I thought this was a bit off putting. I'm a busy lady with lots of stuff to get done, I don't want to wait behind a person who's returning 15 cans of paint. So Lowe's, because I dislike the parking lot at Home Depot, I'm going to return again but I'm really hoping you'll have more people on hand to help me out. Hardware stores are basically arts and crafts stores for men, and I'm really not into the hunt. Just the essentials and a quick check out.

Long before I was a yelper, CPK was my very favorite restaurant in the whole entire world. This was when I was in the 12th grade, a Senior in high school and thought to myself "How can anything else taste better than this?!" I remember trying to get a job as a hostess, having a group interview and not getting called back. Sure CPK didn't think I was that awesome, but hopefully since then, I've proven them wrong on some level.

As my world view has evolved since the 12th grade, but CPK still remains a solid choice when hitting the mall. It's a place everyone in the family feels comfortable and you can get a damn good salad that eats like a meal. I like sharing a full salad and pizza with my boyfriend, and we usually leave with a full belly. They still offer free bread but you have to make sure to ask for it.

This particular location is very busy so during peak hours you can expect to wait a good 30-60 minutes for a table depending on the size of your party. If you've only got two in your party, see if you can grab a seat at the bar as there's less of a wait. If you're ordering take-out you'll still have quite a wait ahead of you so plan wisely and call well before you plan to pick-up.

Eat-the Restaurant At Loews Vanderbilt Hotel

3.0 star rating

During my weeklong visit to Nashville I stayed at the Loews hotel and visited EAT three times to watch songwriters. It was an easy choice as it was located in the lobby right by the elevators. There is certainly something to be said about a convenient location.

EAT doesn't have a great view or fancy decor, but the waiter who served me during my visits was always cheerful and did his very best to make sure I was happy. I ate the split pea soup with cornbread one night and although it wasn't a spectacular meal, it's hard to expect split pea to be amazing. Service is wonderful, food was forgettable, but the drinks were always great. I don't think I would make a special trip to dine at EAT but would be happy to return to watch a round of songwriters.

Dan's Guitars

"My microphone smells like vomit."

That was what I exclaimed to my friend John while setting up for a gig last month.  Thankfully he had a microphone in his gear bag and I didn't have to use the house microphone. I thought about how many musicians must have used that microphone and the germaphobe in me almost threw up. After this "vomit" flavored incident, I decided that I would buy my own mic to use at future gigs.

After reading a slew of fantastic reviews on Yelp, I decided to visit Dan's Guitars to buy my new microphone. Dan's is located on the corner of McCully & Beretania across from the Shell station and KFC, and is next door to Connie Gayle's. The parking lot is small and I waited awhile for someone to vacate a spot. The store itself is small but a musician's dream. Guitars line the walls and it's stuffed with gear and accessories.

I stood there waiting for someone to help me but everyone was with other customers. A musician I had met through a friend, who happened to also work there, came over to see what I needed and I told him I wanted a mic. He took me over to a small glass case and showed me my options which were two exactly. He told me the differences and I decided on a Sure mic which had been marked down from $120 to $99. Sweet! It felt good knowing that the guy making the recommendation knows his stuff because he plays live around town a few times a week.

I'm going to reserve my last star for the next time I visit Dan's Guitar and get to talk to Dan himself. I'm ready to get a new guitar this Summer and hopefully I'll be able to find it here at this awesome little neighborhood music haven!

I've never hired Aunty Lisa for a private party, but every month she delights my little five-year old daughter at Eat The Street! On the last Friday of each month we make our journey to ETS to work the Yelp booth and eat our way through the myriad of food trucks.

The first time Aunty Lisa painted my daughter's face I said "Whoa, you look just like Hello Kitty!" My daughter squealed with delight and I showed her off to everyone who came by.

(Hello Kitty face paint: http://www.yelp.com/bi...)

Month after month my little Mimi gets her face painted like Hello Kitty but this month she made the leap to butterfly! I'm always surprised by how quickly Aunty Lisa is able to churn out those beautifully painted faces.

(Butterfly face paint: http://www.yelp.com/bi...)

She works purely on tips at ETS as it's a way of advertising her business. We give her a good tip and of course a priceless hug from a very appreciative five-year old butterfly.
