Puffettes Egg Puff

I've been wanting to try Puffettes for forever but hadn't had the chance until today's Eat The Street. As others have written it's a puffy waffle which comes with a custardy vanilla dipping sauce. I kept going back and forth on whether or not to give Puffettes 3 or 4 stars. Although they are fun to eat with friends because they separate into bite sized pieces, I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way to find them. I think I'd prefer if they had a crispier texture. (Oh and fruit with whipped cream!) My one year old baby really liked them so that was a bonus because my kid is a tough one to feed. We tried both the original and the chocolate, I like the chocolate because it had a deeper flavor.

J R's Caps & Embroidery

How do you make a cool Yelp party costume?

1) You make it from scratch with yelpy ingenuity and massive amounts of creativity.
2) You buy something and embroider it.
3) You go naked and stencil your body with a Yelp burst.

I chose #2 this time around to make a Yelp gi for a Karate Kid themed event because:

1) I have three children who make me very tired.
2) They have sucked out all ingenuity and creativity from my soul. Where do you think breast milk comes from?!
3) Do you honestly think I have the time or energy to make anything from scratch anymore?
4) Sorry dude, I've got kids and I'm not a stripper. Naked is no longer an option.

I thought of this ingenious idea of embroidering a karate gi but of course this brilliant idea didn't come to fruition until the ninth hour. I called around to see who could do same day embroidery but everyone needed 3-5 working days. I called J R's and they were able to do it after much begging and pleading.

Located on the bottom floor of Sear's, J R's does custom embroidery on basically anything. Hats, shirts, etc. At first the girl on the phone was not very friendly but in person they ended up doing a good job on the embroidery. She even called me to help match the correct color of red on my logo. They called me when my job was done and I'd have to say my costume was a hit!

$50 set-up fee for logo embroidery but they'll charge you double if you need it in a rush. Yes friends, that's a Benjamin! As I know I'll be embroidering other things in the future and this was a rush job, I didn't mind paying the charge but boy that hurt the wallet. Oh and no website. Get one J R's! It's 2012!!!

Sumo Ramen and Curry

Both of my daughters (5 years old & 1 year old) love eating ramen and we eat at Sumo Ramen every 2-3 weeks. It's not my first choice for where I'd want to grab a meal but because we take gymnastics in the same complex (Old 99 Ranch), it's convenient.

Normally we order a shoyu ramen and gyoza combo for $7.65. It usually takes 5-10 minutes for them to prepare our food and we eat at the tables in the food court. The woman who runs this food stand is always very nice to us and has children of her own. I always have them separate the broth from the noodles because then I can give them plain noodles with just a little broth. This way there's no chance of burning a tongue or 2nd degree burns on an arm or a leg. The portion is more than enough for us to share. My little ones are both very picky eaters so it's nice to have a snack which will occupy them for a good 10-15 minutes. But boy, what a mess they make!

Sumo Ramen is a good pick for lunch/dinner if you've got kids. It's affordable and fast which are always helpful. In my opinion, it's also more healthy than some of the other options in the food court.

Hawaii Martial Arts Supply

Category: Martial Arts

5.0 star rating
1/24/2012 1 photo 1 Check-in Here
At first I'll admit I was a little hesitant to visit Hawaii Martial Arts Supply because they run their operation out of a storage unit. I have this fear that one day I'll go to my storage unit and my check-in on Yelp is the last you'll ever hear of me! Too many horror movies and episodes of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.' But I really needed to get a costume for a Yelp party and Hawaii Martial Arts Supply is located right in town.

I called to make sure they were open and the woman who answered the phone told me they'd be out for lunch from 11:30 am-1:00 pm. I got there at about 11 am and called to let her know I was in the parking lot. She came down to get me and I went up in the elevator to their unit. Other than being located in a storage unit, they have a fairly professional set-up. Items nicely organized on shelves, air conditioning and they take credit cards.

I told the couple who runs Hawaii Martial Arts Supply what I was looking for and they did a great job of helping me to find the right sizes of karate gi. It was a Karate Kid themed party I was shopping for and couldn't remember what color belt Ralph Macchio wore in the final fight scene. They looked up the movie on their computer and helped me pick a black belt.

I'm happy to say that I am alive and my Yelp check-in is not the last you'll hear of me. Hawaii Martial Arts Supply is legit and in these difficult economic times, they're doing their best to run a professional retail operation. Support a really nice couple and get your martial arts gear (for real or fake purposes) from your friendly neighborhood storage unit!

Onotogo

My boyfriend is modern day caveman of sorts and this means his needs are as follows:
1) Caveman eat meat.
2) Caveman drink beer.
3) Caveman play or watch sports.
4) Caveman feel up cavegirl.

Those four basic needs combined make a happy caveman but boy oh boy, feeding that caveman can get expensive. He literally inhales giant dead animal carcasses faster than I can cook them. It's a good thing we're past the hunting stage because my spear chucking skills are less than stellar and we might never get a square meal.

I am so happy that I've found Onotogo because they feed my caveman with their $9 Pulehu short ribs and chicken plate which includes two scoops rice and toss/mac salad. I showed him his plate and he said "(Grunt) Lots of meat." This translated means "Wow honey, thanks so much! You are the best! I am so lucky to have such an amazing person to take care of me. I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!" Yes, he is a man of few words but the emotion behind them is not lost in translation.

Yajima-Ya

Yajima-Ya is my new favorite lunch wagon and high-five to Michael C for writing a stellar review that made me want to try it. I adore Japanese comfort food and this truck delivers it at a steal. Located across from the Yajima-Ya service station on Sheridan Street (right turn on King Street before Keeaumoku), this lunch wagon is in a small lot right next door to Ono To Go. They have a canopy with a few tables so you can eat there or grab take out.

I walked up to the wagon and perused the menu. They offer donburi, udon, tempura and a few specials. The Japanese man (from Japan I might add) running the truck gave me an overview of popular items and I ended up getting the Japanese beef stew with pork ginger for $8.50. My plate came with two scoops rice, potato salad and spinach greens. My beef stew was shabu shabu style and my pork ginger was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The potato salad was fab as well and I devoured every bite with an "ooooo" and an "aaaah." My BF kept laughing at me because of how much I was enjoying my plate but I didn't care.

I'm adding Yajima-Ya is regular stop in my weekly lunch calendar and can't wait to eat there again! Next time I'm going to grab one of those waffles Michael C is such a fan of. If you have a Japanese Obachan, you're going to love this truck!

Tango Contemporary Café

Update - 1/20/2012 2 photos 11 Check-ins Here
I am a huge fan of breakfast at Tango! $10-$15 per person and very yummy.

Order these three items:
1) Swedish pancakes
2) Gravlax eggs benedict
3) Coffee (It's the best in town! Swear on my dead goldfish!)

If you order anything else, do not blame me for any of your misfortune. I just handed you the keys to my Universe.

My favorite thing to enjoy at Tango is their TT (Third Tuesday) Wine Dinner. It's about $50 per person and includes four courses PLUS wine pairings! Often it's the best meal I'll have all month and the value is unbelievable. Each month they feature a different winery so it's always a new experience. One thing I would warn you about though is that it's really easy to stumble drunk out of Tango after this wine dinner. It's definitely something to be enjoyed with good friends who appreciate the finer things in life! Be sure to make reservations well ahead of time for either 5:30 pm or 8:00 pm as they often sell out on both seatings.

I enjoy their homemade bread and have been known to ask the waiter to bring me back a second basket with butter. I admit that I am a carb whore. Don't judge.

I've found my new favorite breakfast spot and thankfully my BF is a fan too! That means I won't have to find a new boyfriend which is a huge timesaver during the holidays. All jokes aside though, the breakfast here is phenomenal because of what you get for the price. On this visit to Tango we ordered the salmon eggs benedict ($9.75) and the Swedish pancakes ($7.75). I couldn't decide whether or not to be healthy so we split our plates. There are only a few more weeks of pregnancy left in me and I figure it's the only time it'll be okay for me to be a fatty!

If you're an eggs benedict fan then you'll be pleased with Tango's salmon eggs benedict. We got ours with smoked salmon and our friends ordered theirs with gravlax. It was perfectly prepared and all I could say was yuuummmmm. I think the world would be a much better place if we got everything covered in hollandaise sauce. It could in fact be the solution to all the dissonance between North & South Korea. They don't have hollandaise sauce to keep them fat and sleepy so that's why they're fighting. Just saying...

Those of us who are not so into the extra ass you'll grow by eating eggs benedict, you can opt for the Swedish pancakes as a light and eggy breakfast treat. I loved the texture and even better was that it was served with a tasty boysenberry jam and cubed fresh fruit. I almost didn't trade with my BF when it came time to swap plates but I just can't say no to hollandaise sauce.

And last but not least is the coffee at Tango. If you love coffee you're really going to enjoy their brew which will inject you with enough caffeine for an entire week! I'm still doing hand stands from yesterday! Breakfast for two with coffee comes out to about $25 and I think that's quite a steal! Service was fantastic but beware that they don't take reservations unless you have a party of five or more. Free parking in the Hokua...

This morning I had the pleasure of having breakfast at Tango Contemporary Cafe with my friend Michelle (the owner of Tea at 10240). For all the years that Tango has been open, this morning was actually the first time I ever had the pleasure of eating there. Perhaps it was the name or the sign or some weird idea in my head about them serving giant kabobs that stopped me from ever attempting to eat at this small, refined eatery. Thankfully Yelp and Michelle changed my mind because indeed they do not serve giant kabobs. And just in case you're wondering I am a bit scared of giant kabobs in the way that others are completely creeped out by circus clowns.

For those of you who love a nice strong cup of coffee in the morning, you are going to looove the coffee at Tango. As I write this review my hands are shaking and I'm kind of tweaking out from the two cups I downed during breakfast. I'm writing a review, making phone calls, doing the dishes and just wrote a new hit song on my guitar all at once because that's how unbelievable caffeinated I am! Boy this is going to be total downer later on this afternoon when all this adrenaline wears off!

Now for the food! My friend Michelle ordered the loco moco at the suggestion of our waiter which was fried rice topped with beautiful slices of braised beef and egg on top. They also have hollandaise sauce that goes on top but Michelle got it on the side. I think hollandaise on everything gives you an automatic extra star! I ordered the Pytt I Panna, a swedish style potato with ham and sausage hash, because I liked the name and Michelle said it was excellent! If you're a fan of eggs benedict, Tango has an assortment of crab, salmon, standard and if you want you can mix and match, which I thought was nice. Today I didn't feel like downing 1500 calories worth of creamed butter so I decided to pass. Maybe tomorrow though!

Our food came very quickly and everything was excellent! I really enjoyed my Pytt I Panna and it made me want to play patty cake! I'm not a huge breakfast fan and normally wouldn't enjoy something with sausage but I liked it! It didn't taste greasy and all the flavors melded together very well. Michelle's loco moco looked amazing and she cleaned her plate so it must have been good!

Overall wonderful experience, great service and much better than hitting up a greasy spoon in my opinion. Free validated parking and convenient location was also a plus. Good, clean breakfast spots are very difficult to find and this would probably be number two on my list behind The Cream Pot. This would also be an excellent place to come for a girly lunch or bridal shower type of get together. I can't wait to come back with my BF for lunch or dinner as I'm excited to see what else Tango has to offer my belly!

The Pineapple Room by Alan Wong

When you think about semi-swanky dining options at Ala Moana Center, there's either Longhi's, Mariposa or Pineapple Room. I had a business meeting scheduled for lunch time and my business date chose the Pineapple Room.

I think the fact that the Pineapple Room has Alan Wong's name on it immediately puts a ton of pressure on this location. Alan Wong's is the one of the most, if not the MOST, heralded restaurants in Honolulu. There is a level of expectation inferred which makes it difficult for the Pineapple Room to hit the 5-star mark. It's in a Macy's, that's just tough.

When you visit the Pineapple Room you've got two choices: Eat at the bar or wait to be seated in the dining room. I immediately headed for two open bar seats, but my dining companion had beat me to the restaurant and was already seated. At my business associate's suggestion we both ordered the Express Lunch for $25.50. It's really the best deal at Ala Moana Center in my opinion. You get ice tea or coffee, cup of soup, salad & kahlua pig bacon sandwich and a small dessert. All for just $25.50 and at an expedited pace. Best deal I've seen in awhile! #WINNING

The clam chowder soup was divine and the kahlua pig bacon sandwich would have been perfection except that we both found it to be a bit "sticky." The texture of the sandwich literally sticks to your mouth (I think it's the mayo or cream cheese) and it only gets more difficult to deal with the longer your entree sits. This could probably be improved by changing the bread.

Service was crazy good, like almost to the point where I have to believe that everyone knew I was the Yelp Community Manager. Uh, I'm still eating, please stop asking if I'm done. Why can't you just leave my bread basket there until I leave? Do I look like I need to stop eating carbs? Okay maybe I need to hit the gym more often.

The new General Manager of the Pineapple Room was even nice enough to come up and introduce himself to us. I thought he was saying hello to everyone in the restaurant but somehow he knew who I was. He's a fan of Yelp and I am grateful for that. He was wonderfully charming but it still made me think - Maybe I need to start wearing a wig when I go out to eat?

Sally Beauty Supply

After hitting up Babies R' Us, I spied Sally Beauty Supply while packing up my car. I had been looking for a Hot Tools curling iron as I'd not been able to find it at any local drug stores. All my hair stylist friends say it's the best! Crossing my fingers I entered the store.

I looked through the aisles of hair products, make-up, nail polish, hair (yes hair!) and didn't really see any brands I was familiar with. I think this store is more geared towards the home beautician or owners of smaller shops. It was a bit different from what I expected and unfortunately they didn't have my curling iron. I asked the sales lady if they had it but she said they had lots of other items to choose from. Wom wom wom...The sales lady was really nice but if she had given me some info on the different irons I might have purchased something. Food for thought?

I think when I'm looking for some crazy fake hair or a home dye job, I'll be back to sample some of their products. Until then, I'll be searching for my Hot Tools curling iron elsewhere.

Marukai Market Place

Looking for some hachimaki for a Yelp party, I decided to buy a membership to Marukai. For $15 my BF & I got two membership cards which are good for one year. We showed our cards to the uber tough looking sixty-five year old Filipino security lady and walked into a crazy Japanese mess. Hello Kitty, bento boxes, senbei, chopsticks, musubi press, rice cookers, hibachi, and every kind of Japanese knick knack under the sun. It's not well organized by any means and it took us awhile to find the hachimaki. I hunted down (and I stress HUNTED) a salesperson who helped us find them. I told her that I was throwing a Karate Kid themed party and wanted to make sure that none of the hachimaki had anything offensive written on them. She said "Oh that's so Hollywood!" Uh yeah, but the Karate Kid rules and I used to totally have the biggest crush on Ralph Macchio! You know you did too, so no lie!

With hachimaki in hand, we looked through the bento section but decided to pass. I thought they were a bit skimpy and wouldn't make a dent in my Samoan sized appetite! The highlight of our visit was seeing the Costco Chicken Lady at the bento counter and listening to her scream "Yeeeeeeeee haw!" I think Marukai needs to hire that woman's sampling skillz to sell some bento and bring her energy to the party. Although it's messy, I have to say that the pricing of everything is very reasonable but man do they need to get a retail merchandiser to organize that crazy mess.
