The Egg & I

Category: Breakfast & Brunch
Neighborhood: Memorial

If you like omelets and frittatas, then The Egg & I is your place!

Pros:
- Amazing service
- Fantastic, flavorful food
- Good prices for good portions
- A large menu with a big variety of breakfast and lunch items
- I don't drink coffee, but my friends who have gone with me do and you get a giant pot on the table
- When you go for the first time, ask for your "first timer" gift

Cons: (I only have one and it's a tiny one!)
- I've been to two locations and it's always a little warm inside

The Egg & I is definitely worth a visit!

Liberty Kitchen

I'm not sure what the big fuss about Liberty Kitchen is, but I'm 110% positive I've had better food and service in Houston.

Three friends and I went for Sunday brunch. Our service was terrible and it took *forever* (by which I mean 35 minutes) to get two breakfast sandwiches and one of their plain American-style breakfasts (eggs, toast, potatoes). My friend asked for his fried egg over-easy and it came out over-hard. I found the food extremely bland. It literally had no flavor. We also ordered a piece of german chocolate cake and it also had no flavor. It was very odd -- I've never had a piece of german chocolate cake that didn't taste, well, chocolatey.

Liberty Kitchen is certainly proud of their food and the prices show. I spend a lot of money on food, but spending $16 for an omelet just ain't kosher.

I'm supportive of local Houston businesses succeeding, and want to see that early and often. But LK may need to take a look at some of the comments here (you know, from people who like to eat out) and make a few adjustments. I'm pretty sure I won't return to Liberty Kitchen anytime soon.

Curra's Grill

Update - 1/2/2012
Exactly a year later and Curra's is still as good as ever. Nothing's ever as good as your first time, but good nonetheless.

Our food took a really long time to come out and it had been sitting for a bit, so it was cool. The chips and salsa were da bomb, though, and the food was still good. We must have just hit them on an off day. You should still go!

Holy. Mexican. Goodness. I randomly found Curras Grill and, OMG, what a find!

Named one of Texas Monthly's best mexican restaurants in the whole state, I was greeted by a very nice man. I was eating alone and they were busy, so when he asked me if I wanted to eat at the bar or a table, I said "well, I'd prefer a table, but since I'm alone, you can put me at the bar", to which he replied "no! You're a human being, too, and we're putting you where you want to eat!". Sweet!

My server (Elizabeth, I think) was so cool. When she found out I'd never been there before, she said "I'll be right back" and returned with a sample of their famous Avocado Margarita and a huge plate with samples of each of their sauces on it, where she proceeded to explain each one to me! Not to mention, the regular basket of chips and salsa was seriously, seriously good.

I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor Plate and, oh dear, it was some of the best food I've ever eaten. Pork cooked on a rotisserie and served with cilantro, onions, pineapple and avocado sauce. It was so good that I almost cried. Seriously.

The avocado margarita was awesome, especially with salt.

The staff was great, the atmosphere was fun and lively, and I don't know how it could have gotten any better. Go here...now!

Roost

Neighborhood: Montrose

We ate at Roost on Christmas Eve and cannot wait to go back.

We started with the Bread Service and chose the herb and caper spread. Delish! For dinner, I had the braised lamb shoulder served over polenta, peppers and greens. The lamb is braised for 16 hours and, needless to say, was so tender I could have cut it with a spoon. My date had the flat-iron steak, which I tried and was also delicious.

We certainly couldn't pass on dessert and ordered both the doughnut holes and the dark chocolate pot de creme. The doughnut holes were the best I've ever had anywhere! The pot de creme was good, but the treat of the night was the homemade egg nog they'd made for Christmas Eve! It was so good, we nearly wept and subsequently bought three quarts of it. A lady needs nothing if she doesn't need an egg nog aperitif on Christmas day!

I can't say enough good things about the service at Roost. It's pretty stellar. Also, Roost is still BYOB, at least until they get their liquor license from the City, which could feasibly take eons. So enjoy your own bottle while you still can!

Bottom line: run, don't walk, to Roost!

Toscana Ristorante

We were in San Antonio for the holidays and every restaurant within walking distance of our hotel was full. Toscana was no exception, but the hostess double-checked and saw that two additional tables had been added for seating, so she seated us right away.

The food was fantastic -- in the mood for comfort food, I had the Spaghetti Bolognese, which was excellent and my friend had the veal, which was equally good. We ordered the asparagus and red potatoes to share, and both were delicious!

The service at Toscana was outstanding! Our waiter was extremely attentive and the manager made his way by each table to ensure we had had a good dining experience.

My only little complaint was over the dessert -- we ordered the Cannoli and for $8, would have liked a little more for our money, but that was a very small thing in an otherwise great dinner. I would definitely return if/when I'm in San Antonio again.

Louisiana Nursery

Looking for new plants for the spring that are healthy and gorgeous? Then do not miss Louisiana Nursery! Their selection of plants and flowers are second to none; in fact, whenever I'm in Baton Rouge, I make sure to stop at La Nursery to pick up a lovely potted plant.

They also have an amazing selection of gifts, garden items (i.e., wind chimes, flags, decorative balls, etc.), ribbons, interior decorating things, and awesome holiday decorations!

I would have given four stars, but no matter which location I go to, the staff is just not friendly. They're not at all helpful. If you can get past that, though, the plants are fantastic.

Thee Heavenly Donut

I like donuts. From Shipley's in Houston to Tim Horton's in Toronto, I like a good donut for breakfast every now and then. Thee Heavenly Donuts, however, are the best donuts I've ever eaten.

The donuts are made fresh every single day; in fact, the staff gets to work at 3am every morning to open at 4am! The donuts are piping hot (and way better than Mary Lee!), moist, light, and fan-freaking-tastic!

The staff is super friendly -- almost to a fault -- and do everything they can to make sure you're taken care of. They serve all kinds of coffees, including cafe au lait, and have milk and juice, as well.

We also picked up a King Cake, which was good, but make note that it's really just a giant cinnamon twist with icing on top. They still bake the baby inside the cake, which is seriously awesome.

If you want to taste a piece of heaven, drive straight over to Thee Heavenly Donut, like now!

French Market Bistro

Oh. My. God. French Market Bistro may have just become my new favorite restaurant in Baton Rouge!

FMB's food is delicious -- it's flavorful, fresh, seasoned well, and, most importantly to me, temperature-appropriate! I loathe when food that's supposed to be hot is lukewarm and vice versa, but my soup and crepes were served steaming hot. Props!

I met three friends for lunch and started with the brie and crab bisque. It was outstanding and, had I been in different company, I likely would have licked the bowl. I had the "Tennis Special" for my main, which is two shrimp and mushroom crepes topped with lump crabmeat and a mornay cheese sauce. Um, hello. It was wicked good.

One of my friends was celebrating a birthday and they served us a complimentary Chocolate Chip Brownie Cake for her special day -- so nice!

The service was on the slower side (they definitely aren't in your face), but wasn't bad. The menu has a lot from which to choose and seemed to be priced well.

Overall, my first trip to FMB was awesome and I'll definitely be back!

Lagniappe Frame Shoppe

If you've had your head under a rock for the last two-ish years, then you probably haven't seen the awesomness that are Stacy Blanchard's Fleur-de-Tigre. You know, those gorgeous curved fleur-de-lis with the LSU Tiger drawn inside. Basically, they're all the rage and are the signature of the new Lagniappe Frame Shoppe on Jefferson Highway.

Stacy, the owner and artist, is the first person to greet you when you walk in to the store, which is warm and comfortable. The shop has all kinds of fleur-de-lis' to choose from, including painted igloo's and mailboxes. In addition to the fleur-de-lis, there are beautiful unframed prints, etchings, and art, as well as gorgeous frames for custom framing.

Prices are reasonable and the framing is top-notch.

Royal Standard the

Category: Antiques

4.0 star rating
3/6/2011 First to Review
One of my *very* favorite shops in Baton Rouge, The Royal Standard has a gigantic selection of interiors, gifts, and furniture. There are two stores on Perkins Road -- one near LSU and one near Highland Road -- and both are run as a collective of individual mini-boutiques, each with their own unique merchandise. What's great about that, of course, is that there's something for everyone. They have everything from antique sterling silver spoons to custom furniture. Not surprisingly, there's a plethora of items with fleur-de-lis' on them, too.

The staff at Royal Standard is unfailingly nice and helpful -- there's not a single ounce of snootiness!

Bottom line: if you're looking for a place in Baton Rouge where you're assured to find something awesome, your first stop should be the Royal Standard.
