their stuff is still dry. I realized is because the staff seems to not give a flying f. After all the complaints on here about them being dry they need to shape up.I think that the staff are not trained well to deal with gluten free baking, which why their food is getting worse.  It's either the people who are giving rave reviews are being paid, have amazing salivary glands or ..... whoever is specifically baking their food is putting a lot of effort into it . Those reviewers are suspect.

Another thing that irked me was when i was purchasing the goods a person was being trained and they(trainer) didn't take the gluten free diet seriously. she did not convey it in a serious tone.

The three stars are for them existing in Los Angeles, them potentially doing away with spelt , the service and using coconut oil. Great service! Two stars is knocked of due to dry cupcakes.

Okay i have been to baby cakes roughly 13 times infrequently since it's opening. The gaps in time were for chances to improve quality. I have tried tree different types of desserts the cupcakes, brownies and loaves.

    The cupcakes
They have been consistently dry. Another yelper tried their cupcakes, not from their storefront (event), and had a completely opposite experience. They did agree that directly from the bakery, it's dry. They range in dryness from:  yeah ,it could have used a little more of something to crumb avalanche. Two times have I went where they have not been so dry was when the cyclist was there.  I noticed right away that the cupcakes were different and the second time proved again that when the cyclist was there the level of dryness improved.  Note: the pumpkin is not that dry but the carrot cupcake is.
Why must they be so dry? The prices are steep for such dry, food.  I would definitely overlook the price if it wasn't the case.
I will give them their dues on taste. They do taste good. Not at all bland and not too sweet and they sit well in the stomach. Next time you eat one take a moment.  The icing is nice and thick. I try to eat the icing and the cupcake together to combat the dryness. I was seriously thinking about getting little container of icing to eat.

Overall, until they improve I will avoid them for a while. I know it's possible to fix the issue.

    The brownies
The brownies are not dry. they are moist and the flavor is consistently great. I have tried both I like the agave nectar cupcake more for taste and the other for awesome the crust. I like a brownie with a crunch from time to time.  Very rich as they should be and they are pretty cute. Cute and tasty.  I do have to say that I do not eat them as frequently.

    Loaves
I had the Banana Chocolate Chip & Carrot Spice(bought as a gift for me).Hot damn, they were good.  Moist, delicious, and dense. The chocolate chip loaf was a hell of a surprise, because I was not expecting it to be so good.  Seriously, I just might just stick to buying these because they were well done. I had them in December so I don't feel that too much could have changed.
The carrot spice was the same deal, moist, delicious, and dense.  Just as good. This is good by itself and with icing. Icing on the other one would be overkill and would distract from the flavor of the loaf.

    The tea
I know they have other tea but all I remember is PG Tips. They should get some loose leaf tea from Urth Café ,they are swell people that I want to hug, their teas would pair well. They should have loose leaf tea and also know how to brew it I say this because it's real easy to do so.

    The service
The staff has always been pleasant and helpful. I feel, no, I KNOW customer service is just as important as the quality. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the service. I appreciate it. Lately, people have been dicks in customer service; it's nice to know that they haven't been so.

    Transit info
BUS: The 720 stops on the beginning of the block it runs from Santa Monica to downtown.  So if you get on most buses that run north-south in la or south LA get there. From the south bay (Westchester & Inglewood(yeah, it's in the southbay)) get the 42 or 439 drops you on Broadway and Figueroa respectively. Walk it or bus it from Fig.
BIKE: They are on the street that is parallel to a street with one way northbound street with a bike lane. The Southbound bike lane is spring which is two streets west. There is a rack across the street.

FYI:  get a bike rack in front and it will be used. Advertise it on the site.

The Sushi:
All fish were fresh!! that need to be noted.
I had mostly sashimi with one roll. The roll was for filler. It was okay.
Blue fin tina 1
Scallop  2
Clam  2
toro 2
The blueffin tuna was not the best the day i went. It was okay in terms of flavor. The scallop was damn good. It was smooth and buttery. That was what i favored that night. The toro was en pointe, as well.
I felt great that night afterwards. If my spirits are lifted the fish was fresh.

The Service
I sat at the bar. I don't like it another way. i like to be able to talk to the chef at any point to make sure something I don't like happens and it means, and faster service.

The waiters were great, although waiting for the check took way too long.

The doughnuts:
They are amazing. i was on a group ride and me and two other cyclist broke off and introduced me to the location, back mid '09. I was a little skeptical. Look like many other doughnut joints. I was wrong. He told me about the blue berry doughnut. I tried the glaze as well. DAMN AWESOME DOUGHNUTS ! If you need a place for doughnuts go here Their oil is at the right temp. Their dough is top notch. their prices are not bad.

The service:
They are courteous. They have a high turn-over rate so they stay fresh. They don't produce more than they need. I have not had a stale doughnut from them.

Even if i can't eat wheat anymore, they will have a place in my heart . They care about their food and their business.

i just called them and asked if they even had a plant in stock and they said they are closed already. that was the answer. i could have come the next day if they had the product. i'm in no rush. That was rude. if that was the case don't pick up the phone.

Bird Pick Tea & Herb

Categories: Coffee & Tea, Tea Rooms
Neighborhood: Culver City

Midway through consuming my 2nd batch of special premium grade Oolong tea that I purchased I found feathers. I know what you may be thinking,"BIRD PICK, picked by birds, duh" and that's what I though the first time. I didn't think much of it the first time but this is the second time I found feathers it there has been enough time between purchases to correct the issue.

The issue: I was told that the feather I found came from their feather duster. I thought how would they have known that there where feathers in the tea, I let it slide the manager(?) Gave me another batch and it was all good. Unfortunately the tea and the feathers blend in very well. My issue is that a feather duster is being used. Another form of duster should be used that doesn't move dust around and leave room for the tea to be contaminated. If the feathers are not coming from the dusters and coming from picking and processing I apologize to the employees but I still take issue since 1.need better processing practices or 2. Warn people that there will be feathers3. Use something else other than a feather duster.

Other than the feather problem,.......

The employees appreciate tea and that is one thing I feel is important, employees who actually give a damn about what they are selling and understand their customers.

I love this place because I love tea and the more places that sell tea means that maybe more people might take chances and open more tea related businesses. Also I think their selection of teas is great. I am sure they will resolve this issue.

Tea review:

Their earl grey is very light on the bergamot, for those who like a strong bergamot flavor. The special grade premium grade oolong is great depending on the batch.

Teaware:

If you are looking for non bulky thermoses (I'm sure you know what I am talking about) that are not for kids then check them out. They carry Zojirushi's  .5L and 1L vacuum thermoses in a variety and colors and sizes at reasonable prices. Their teaware are beautiful and I like that there have a variety of electronic water boilers. Different styles for different people. They have wares for the traditional, for people who want a hybrid of traditional and modern, and wares for those who are completely modern. I love that they have different sizes of tea bags as not many places have small bags.

I hope this place sticks around.

Simply Wholesome

some's having a bad day at simply wholesome. they are great in person but damn their phone etiqutte is horrible. the few times i have called. i was transferred back and forth a couple times. Then, today, i called this guy sounded really irritated and said they didn't have something when i know they carried it but didn't tell me when that product will be in.

Going to the store is a different story. The people in the store are quite courteous and very helpful. i like their selection. I like that they offer natural hair care products such as kinky curly and this other company which i could tell is a small company don't remember the name. i like that it's like whole foods but much more affordable. not cheap but affordable. I just want ,not hope, that their get their phone etiquette in order and hope the owner is not like whole foods CEO. which at the moment i do not like.

three stars where for the in-store service

the store:
i like the set up  because its *not over whelming*.they separated the sections from lingerie, party products and  i felt that in other stores i have been to i did feel a bit overwhelmed. The store may be small but have the experience of working in small stores its means they took the time to choose what they put on their selves just a bit more carefully. Space is money.

Its not  hard to get to and parking is nice.

the products:
the book selection is pretty nice. they took time to get books that are detailed yet not overwhelming.

I like the fact that the owners researched and decided to carry lubricants that do not disturb the natural flora of women .  Its a certain ingredient that apparently is not a good idea to be using. Why have fun now with potential problems later?

one last thing, for fun ask about the the karma sutra powder. it's is amazing. i have to say pretty damn good idea that powder.

they have a nice, albeit limited selection of French lingerie they do have other lingerie but i found the french to be darling.

what you also may not know:

the owners also have a party company. So  if you go in the store and want to be a host,  you can go in ask them and set up an appointment. a consultant will contact you to set up a time and place. They come buy with an assortment of products that come in the store. there are demonstrations you get to see what things look feel like and how they function.

This review is for their chili fries only as i have no beef with their other food.

What is up with the chili fries huh? the fries are not great to say the least and the the chili? you need to come correct with the chili. it coagulates blood does that not by-products or what ever is in there. I come off harsh but i don't play with chili fries. no sir. I'm not looking for pretty food but could it at least look appetizing damn. that day was not their day for the chili fries.

From the other times their chili game was okay.

i cannot recommend it to eat for pleasure only survival.
