If you wondered if honest, well-priced, independent auto shops still exist in North Oakland...well, they do!

Eric at Roger's Autoworks took great care of my 2007 Volvo and fixed everything I needed at a great price and did it all professionally with a huge dose of friendliness.

Highly recommended...I've been searching for a good Volvo mechanic and now I have one. Blade L. is crazy.

Before I get into a proper review of Room 389, let me just say that I think naming your bar or restaurant after your street address is fucking WAY out of control. Stop already. Get creative and stop being lazy.

Anyways. Room 389 is a huge improvement over the Golden Bear that used to be at this spot on Grand, with a spacious bar, comfy tables, couches in the back, a DJ booth, and black urinals in the men's room. The drinks were decent but I thought the $6 beers were a little pricey.

Music was generic R&B and pretty boring, but the bartender was super nice and I loved the space. Please don't turn super douchey.

Pleasepleaseplease!

Kind of a cool, retro ex-Swiss Chalet look inside, this place is the epitome of a family run operation, so don't expect too much.

The two star experience was kind of exactly what I'd expected, with hot plate Mexican, beer specials, margarita pitchers, and pretty decent chips and salsa. This is not "good Mexican food" by any stretch of the imagination, but it will do.

This place was magical because it was on the top of a mountain next to our resort, and they served food late night even though we felt as if we were in a ghost town. Actually, some of the better pub food I've had with super friendly service. The chicken fingers sandwich was super tasty, with soft bread and lots of seasoning. Great beers on tap, lots of TV's, and, a younger snow-bro crowd. Yes.

Palace Auto Center

Somewhere between a dealership, a private sellar, and an awesome collection of European cars is Palace Auto Center.

Full of great cars, mostly BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, VW's, and Audis, their selection is clearly photographed on their up to date website.

We were very wary about buying our new dream car, and not only did Rob and Naomi at Palace have the car we wanted, they make everything very easy and comfortable. It was so good to be able to get all our questions answered by a guy who doesn't love to sell cars, but just simply loves the cars he sells.

From the moment we shook hands to that awesome day a week later when we drove away in our new Volvo, Palace made everything easy and their prices are incredibly reasonable.

The only slight blemish was because they are such a small operation, they can get busy sometimes and our DMV paperwork and plates took longer than I'd expected to arrive, so make sure to ask him when to expect everything before you drive off the lot in your new ride.

Thanks Rob & Naomi! See you in a few years when we're ready to try something new.

My new favorite Oakland restaurant?

If you can put up with the slow pace at which the kitchen brings out your food, it's amazingly delicious and may be my new favorite Oakland restaurant. The, food, space, service, and wine were all great (*except for the dessert, which besides taking forever was undercooked and not very good).

If you have a group over four see if you can get the tall table in the middle of the room, that spot looked awesome.

Even with the slow kitchen and sub-par dessert, this spot still is deserving of five stars.

Hey Yelp.

Thanks for deleting my honest, well written, non insulting review of this restaurant.  What happened to "Real People, Real Reviews?"

I want my text back.

Still two stars.

It's back.

Remodeled, with a new bar, new TV's, and new awkward tables.  REALLY NICE BATHROOMS (I hope that lasts).  Great beer selection, but honestly it's kind of like a faceless hotel bar.  There is NOTHING on he walls, and there are still pool tables which means there will probably still be fights by people who play pool.

But at least it's back.

It's the Kingfish.  What else can I say?

Cheap beer and wine, popcorn, Vinnie the bartender, SHUFFLEBOARD, and decades of memorabilia on the walls.  This bait-shop turned beer joint is the closest thing you'll find to a real honky-tonk in Oakland.

Sure they don't have liquor and the jukebox hasn't changed in five years, but I'm not often happier than when I walk into the KF on a cold winter night and feel the blast of the furnace and see all my friends gathered around the tables playing dominoes amidst pitchers of PBR.

The Kingfish is classic, we need to keep it open!

Beer Revolution

A welcomed addition to the JLS area, I will probably find myself stopping by Beer Revolution quite a few times come sunny weather to take advantage of their outdoor front patio.

The space inside feels almost like a clubhouse, with tables made from barrels and what appears to be a lifetime collection of beer memorabilia on the walls.  The owners were very friendly and offered lots of suggestions.

I would say it's 2/3 bar, 1/3 beer store, and you can open any of the bottle beers if you add $1 "corkage," which may be a better deal because I found the on-tap beers to be overpriced.

I had just returned from Toranado in SF on a Saturday and had a full pint of Pliny the Eldger for $3.50.  I rolled into Beer Revolution later that afternoon and paid $4 for probably 10 ounces worth of beer, the pours were very small.

Quality place, a welcomed new spot, beautiful patio, but bigger pours would be much appreciated!
