I was really looking forward to my first trip ever to New Orleans, even if it was work related. And when my boss found out my flight was booked to arrived at midnight, he recommended that I book a driver to pick me up from the airport. My initial thought was ... "Nice! A driver"...proceeded with... "Exactly how dangerous is New Orleans?"

Any way, with that, I began to quote out car companies around the area. Bonomolo was dependable, reliable, friendly and at the best price. Since my flight arrived during "off hours" the other car companies quoted me around $125 +tip for a pickup between midnight and 5am. I spoke to Susan at Bonomolo and she quoted me $75 for a sedan, one way airport pickup. Done!

The driver, Chris met me at the baggage terminal. He was very helpful and gave me some great tips on what to see and where to go. Also instead of the usual Towncar, it was a black, very clean, Jaguar XJL.

Thanks Bonomolo for getting me to the airport from my hotel without getting me mugged, lost or abducted by extraterrestrials.

What's that? You want to know whats better than a vodka soda for $3.50? Well, that would be a $3.50 vodka soda thats "for here" or "to-go." And yes, it was my first time to New Orleans.

Mollys is a little dive bar with some very efficient bartenders. The bar was empty around 7 but got packed right around 8:30pm on a Friday night. They also serve food but I'd recommend coming here for drinks and going else where to eat and friendly bartenders.

But more importantly, I got to meet up with some awesome Yelpers! Lindsay, Marielle and Scott - You guys rock my Yelp!!

Review is long over due but I had a fabulous joint birthday party here with hottie Amy C and around 25 of our friends. I really didn't know what to expect since I didn't get a chance to visit the rooftop bar before the event but I really couldn't ask for more in a venue:

- an outdoor heated patio plus an indoor lounge/bar with a fireplace
- panoramic view of the ocean and the pier
- friendly and fast bartenders
- friendly bouncers
- dinner/bar menu
- awesome event manager (ask for Jess Park if you're planning an event)
- dj, who refused to play Lady Gaga...
- no cover but do expect to wait in line if you get there around 10pm on a Saturday (5-10 min wait)
- the venue isn't that big but we booked early so there was plenty of seating for all our guests

This is such an ideal spot to get together with friends, a date or those visiting from out of town. I had a very memorable birthday with great drinks, delicious Enjoy cupcakes, close friends and family and many lovely photos by Kwiri to prove it! ;) I heart you all for making it such a special day!

How do you say "bland" in Spanish? Even for West LA standards this place is mediocre at best.

The service is 5 stars, really nice people that work there, unfortunatley great service can't make up for lackluster food. We ordered 2 tacos, a burrito, side of rice and beans and a horchata for around $25. The rice kind of tasted like butter but no other seasonings or flavor. The meat was dry, again barely seasoned, I had to drench it with pico de gallo and hot sauce. And needless to say the same bland rice, beans and meat were stuffed into the burrito.

+ easy parking
+ friendly service

- bland food
- overpriced bland food
- cash only

For the price and a very casual/fast food venue, I prefer the homemade corn tortillas from Tacomiendo or the carne asada from Tacos Por Favor, or maybe even Baja Fresh or Wahoos... =T

DK Donuts & Bakery

Categories: Donuts, Bakeries, Bagels
Neighborhood: Santa Monica

The mission: to try every single type of donut DKs has to offer and compare them to other donuts in Santa Monica.

The method: make every Friday at the office Donut Day!

The results so far:

The bacon maple donut is a miss for me, its interesting but also nauseating at the same time... please chop the bacon slices, a slice of straight bacon thats been sitting out for even half an hour gets a bit difficult to bite through.

The peanut butter filled, chocolate covered donut is a miss as well. The peanut butter is off in texture some days and good in theory but off on execution.

The sugar donut is better at Huckleberrys although each donut there is $2.50 per.

Other than that, all the other donuts are awesome! And they have a vast selection of different types, flavors, filled donuts, donut holes... you name it.

Their glazed donut has shiny, sugary glaze is coated throughout and its fluffier than WenDy's on Lincoln.

The overall selection and quality at DKs is far better than Donut Kings on Pico and Lincoln and DKs accepts credit cards with a min order of $5, Kings is cash only.

To date my favorites are: the apple fritter, the double dipped chocolate donut and Boston cream pie donut, oh and the French creme and Crullers... its tough to pick just one favorite.

Prompt, friendly service. Cheap. Hole in the wall. Easy parking. Plus they have boba, all types of coffee, Naked juice, breakfast burritos, bagels, cupcakes, fruit, hard boiled eggs, yogurt.... and the list goes on but the best items here are still the donuts.

Conclusions:

You better check yourself before you wreck yourself with donuts... DKs keeps my gym membership going and this little shop has the best donuts in Santa Monica.

I can't wait to come back, that is, after the grand opening crowd dies down. I got the chance to check out SWG for the launch of their Wine Captains Club. http://media1.px.yelpc... John Schwartz of Amuse Bouche Winery was there, pouring a selection of Heidi Barrett wines (http://www.amusebouche...) and I was pleasantly surprised. Usually the thought of a wine bar in a mall makes me cringe, but this is definitely not your average mall restaurant and quite the opposite... great wine, lovely decor and friendly staff.

The focus of the restaurant's layout is the outdoor patio, with a center bar and an enomatic system at the end of the bar, there is some indoor seating but if you're here sit outside. They had tastings of their various cheeses, spreads, garlic Parmesan fries, I could see pizzas were being made in their semi open kitchen.

The restaurant is worth a trip, not only for the wine but their outdoor patio lounge that hosts an amazing view. Its an ideal spot to bring friends or family that are visiting from out of town. A rooftop lounge, a glass of wine with a direct view of the Santa Monica pier during sunset, I'll admit, made my day.

Have a tradeshow in Phoenix? Then stay here or the Sheraton down the street but this place is closer.

If you're in Pheonix for ANY other reason than a tradeshow, then stay elsewhere, like a hotel in Scottsdale. The thing is, its located in an area that doesn't have much going on, unless you're going to see a baseball or basketball game. No decent shopping, activities, restaurants, grocery stores, spa... you get the picture.

The hotel recently went through major renovation in 2008 and its nice, clean, modern, friendly service, gym, small pool and again, its right across the street from the convention center. Other than that, there are five restaurants/bars outside of the hotel that you can walk to. The gym might be the best part, the machines are new, the hotel provides workout towels, ice cold hand towels, water, headphones and each machine has its own built in tv.

If you reserve a business package then you're staying on the 7th floor. Internet is $13 per day. Each room has a plasma, hair dryer, no fridge, no mini bar, there is a lock box and iron.

There hotel itself has a gift store, rotating restaurant on the top floor, sports bar downstairs and a bagel shop. Overall a decent place to stay, but I have no desire to voluntarily visit Phoenix again.

"Are we there yet?"

That was me. On my way to an impromptu dinner at Providence - I felt like a kid going to Disneyland.

This time around we went for the Providence Market menu which is nine courses, including cheese and intermezzo. Overall, the dinner and the wine pairings were even better than the previous visit. Service is still outstanding and Chef Cimarusti was in the kitchen, coming out every now and then to greet patrons.

Onto the food:
Amuse: Gelee of gin and tonic with lime, a margarita ravioli and a small glass containing cured trout, trout caviar, wasabi marshmallow.

Japanese kanpachi with crispy rice crackers, coriander and soy crème fraîche.

Sea urchin served in a farm fresh egg, champagne beurre blanc, fines herbes. My favorite dishes of the night.

Hokkaido scallop with Japanese eggplant, ramps, reduction of vadouvan and sauternes, and cashews.

Wild day-boat pacific halibut with summer squash, black olive, dried apricot, basil.

King salmon - sorry, don't have the info on this one. =/

Veal tenderloin cooked sous vide, with almond, morels, roasted baby carrots, port wine.

Assortment of 20 or so stinky to mild cheeses with dried figs and bread.

Cucumber ice cream, kaffir lime, juniper berry and yogurt.

Yuzu curd, meringue with blackberry sorbet, jasmine.

Phew... it was more than enough food. The dishes and wine pairings complimented and enhanced every dish...unlike the Dining Room in Pasadena, where the wine pairings made the seafood dishes taste like rotting corpses on a plate. But thats another review...

The tasting menu options are five courses $85/$115 with wine pairing, nine courses $110/$155 w/ wp or 14 courses $155/$240 w/ wp. The nine takes about 2.5 hours.

If you can't make it for dinner, go for the dessert tastings, your choice of 3, 5 or 8 courses of uniquely crafted desserts.

Its safe to say, this is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. With every dish, Providence evolved from great to exemplary, with the combination of unpretentious service,  simple elegance in the decor, innovative, delicate flavors from start to finish. Providence is, still amazing.

Yelpers, the word of the day is Providence.

And in two words, this place is ... simply amazing.

Sometimes it's the meal that makes the restaurant memorable and sometimes it's the company. My night at Providence, I was lucky enough to have both.

Dimly lit with almost simple décor, a spiny, orange, red and yellow beaded candle holder are set on each table, the dining room's tan walls are adorned with white monstrous barnacle-esque formations. The exterior is dark wood bejeweled with meticulously placed string of lights. What's note worthy here isn't the décor, it's the service and innovative cuisine. Dishes ranged from unique to comfortably traditional, with a focus on seafood.

Menu items are available a la carte or your choice of tasting menus that range from 5 courses ($85/$115 with wine pairing), 9 courses ($110/$155 w/ wp) or 14 courses ($155/$240 w/ wp).  The tasting menu is highly recommended. We went with the 5, plus one wine tasting.

First off, the bread is ... BACON brioche! Fluffy, warm with chunks of bacon. I dream about this bread.

    - Amuse bouche: saffron syrup & fennel soup served in mini glass mug, mojito ravioli, gin & tonic gelee
    - Yellowtail served with granite (flavored crushed ice)
    - Scallop with puree of Italian squash, shiitake mushrooms
    - Tenderloin of veal, cooked sous vide to perfection
    - Wild Alaskan Halibut, fish that cut like soft butter with your fork

The dessert, was definitely a 3 Yelp stars. Bing cherries, white peaches, with miso ice cream was a mix of the savory and sweet. The miso ice cream tasted like butter flavored ice cream.

But we did go for the box of assorted chocolates that they make in-house. Not any kind of chocolates, the most unique flavors ranging from dark chocolate with orange, rosemary and caramel to milk chocolate with green tea. Hell, you're there. Say yes to the chocolates.

5 star service, informative sommelier and more than accommodating service.

It's not just a meal. Mike C combines traditional service, fresh ingredients, a twist of molecular gastronomy and the innovation of a modern day chef to create a truly amazing dining experience.

    Random facts:
    - Providence currently holds 1 Michelin star (no restaurant in Los Angeles currently has 3 Michelin stars)
-No corkage fees on Monday. Tue-Sun $30 per bottle for a party of 10 or less.
    - Sous vide or "under vacuum" is method of cooking, basically food slow cooked in a bag, this concentrates flavors since the food doesn't take on any additional liquid. Meaning, tender and flavorful.
    - Cimarusti actually beat Chef Morimoto on Iron Chef, battle blackfish and looks like Eli G's brother ....its true... http://www.dinela...

Okay kiddo...that's all I've got. Enjoy!

Scubahaus

Categories: Diving, Swimwear
Neighborhood: Santa Monica

Move over Scuba Steve! I am now scuba certified and I didn't die in the process! Win! ;) Anyone interested in becoming certified should take classes at Scubahaus. You have the option to either take all your classes here, this includes pool time, the written portion and open water (so you're completely SSI certified) for $425 or a referral class, which is what I did for $250. That means I completed the pool time and written test at Scubahaus, then finished the open water else where for an additional price. (I went to Unexso in the Grand Bahamas, so it was an additional $300 to complete my certification.)

Scubahaus will provide the wetsuit, tank, bc, weight belt, regulator, study book, dive log and divers insurance. You will need to bring your own: mask, snorkel, fins, booties, gear bag. I recommend looking into these or going to the shop to buy the gear before your first day of class. They provide a 10% discount for students. Simonster ordered me a scuba set in pink~they're so cute! http://bit.ly/bS3goy And, the store owner, Rocky special ordered these so I was able to pick them up at the shop. Gear can get pricey, but when you're purchasing items that will keep you alive while under water, its a good idea to get the better equipment.

The pool and written portion of the class is 1 night class on Friday (6 to 9pm) and one full weekend (8am-5pm). The pool sessions are at SMC and parking in the lot is free.

Our instructor, Day was an ideal teacher, shes friendly, makes sure you understand the drills and spends the time to explain the principles of what makes a good, ecologically aware diver. The entire class was a very open learning environment and all the students looked out for each other. Thanks Scubahaus! Also if you're in the Grand Bahamas for diving, definitely check out Unexso. Well in my next life, I'd like to come back as a mermaid, until then... I can scuba dive.

First, a big thanks to Mai (http://mai.yelp.com) for introducing me to Hot 8 Yoga... and to yoga in general!

The newly opened, Hot 8's facility is simple, modern and really nice. Your first week is unlimited classes and, FREE. If you're looking to kick up you're normal yoga or workout routine, stop by. I left the Power Fusion class looking like I ran through sprinklers, its an overall great workout. The class was an hour long and in room set at 90 degrees! Don't forget your mat, water bottle and TOWEL.

Early morning classes are available from 6:30am and their latest class is at 8:15pm (Mon-Wed) and 7am classes (Thurs-Friday). They're open 7 days a week with 10+ classes per day. Pricing varies and membership depends on how often you'd like to go, it ranges from unlimited monthly use to paying per class. Friendly staff, new, clean studios, showers, complimentary infused water and cold face towels, great instructors - I'll be back to Hot 8 soon!
