Salt of the Earth provided satisfaction of the immediate to my hungry belly. Dave and I quickly perused the menu posted outside the lower bar door -- bar menu starts at 5pm, first course offerings look delicious -- I'm sold.
We opt to sit in the bar room at street-level where the atmosphere is chillaxing, the TV is front and center, and really old bikes hang from the endlessly high ceiling.
All I need is a snack, but the prices are up there and no snack-y items available at the moment. But if it were any other day of the week, you could pull from the $5 French Quarter Selection, on Mondays you could indulge in $1 oysters and $1 charcuterie ... and yet it's Saturday 5pm. So, options from the bar menu are calling out -- grilled flatbread, scallops, SDLT Burger (grass-fed beef, cheddar and house smoked bacon), spiced chicken wings, etc.
So, Dave orders the $11 flatbread and I splurge with the $15 crab ravioli first course selection. I could extensively speak to both of these items, but all you need to know is that they were delicious! The flatbread was flavored with fried sage leaves and teeny tiny forest foraged mushrooms and the crab ravioli was flavored with Maine crab (subtle sweetness from the crab really shows through the delecate ravioli).
Will return Mondays, and someday for dinner. Go Louis! We love it.

So the food is just lovely, the sauce unique, and the sichuan soup flavorful (and ultra affordable). The noodles were a little too firm for me (which equates to much splattering while eating), but all in all, it was good stuff (melty yummy beef chunks). The space itself could use some work, but I'm all for it versus the reeeally run down Pu Pu Hot Pot.

It's kind of fun to ride my bike or run over the big mounds, but are the creepy cut-out silhouette metal people reeeeeally necessary?

The beer choices are mildly okay for any chain restaurant, but I was sad to see there was no Asahi! Their ginger beer offering (ginger extract with Kirin Light) was refreshing and sweet ... the ginger taste could be overpowering to some. I opted for Sam Winter in a bottle. All of these beers were $4. Not terrible.
For dinner/apps we got the chicken quesadiller (you're not supposed to call it that), veggie chow fun, chicken lettuce wraps, and garlic noodles ... My noods were definitely sitting under the heater for a while coz the top part was all crusty. But I attribute their business to the bad timing on preparing the noods. Can't beat 'em though: 6.75 for a filling bowl of noodles and shredded cukes. The other food looked pretty good, too. Actually, at lunch, their combos are also extremely generous and nicely priced (about $8!) as well, and come with egg drop or hot and sour soup.
Finally, another food establishment in the Kendall-Lechmere zone of Cambridge!

After enjoying a seriously tasty brew, I regained self pride by kicking George's rear in foozball (at one of four tables). Ah! Victory! When I was over my claustrophobia, I went back to friends in the narrow space around the bar.
Long periods of time are spent in the pool hall/fooz hall, but being so cramped inspires a short stay.

This dish was on their daily special menu which I'm fairly sure is the same every day ... but whatevs. I ordered the Yu-Hsiang Shrimp combo, which is a stir fry of fresh shrimps (easily 20 of the plump pink guys) and veggies in some sweet but slightly spicy sauce. It came with fried rice, which didn't sit in a puddle of oil on the plate (plus plus) and tasted pretty darned good. After I was about a minute into my meal, John brings out the other side dish of fried chicken wings, which were really hot out of the fryer. Crispy skin but probably a bit too oiled like an over tanned ... nevermind.
So, I was so full by the end of the meal that I actually had leftovers (a surprising feat for me). And I had them for a pre lunch lunch today. The shrimps were still awesome and I hate eating leftover seafood.

There is something about those soup noodles that forces me to order the wonton noodle soup over and over again. My front of the house man, John, knows that this is my one order yet I keep asking for the menu juuuust in case I change my mind. Seriously, I haven't eaten noodles this good anywhere else. It's the texture, soft yet slightly chewy, and the slurp factor (not too slurpy; easy to twirl without splashing around) that makes it too good to pass up.
And every other time I finish every last morsel and John always asks "do you need more?" You definitely get your fill with one portion. Please send Eo noodles to Cambridge! -

The staff was super friendly and menu selection had something for everyone. Dave and I were just hankering for straight up fish, so we ordered the Zen Chef's Special Sushi & Sashimi Boat for two. Would have gone with the sashimi boat, but realized we might need a little variety.
We killed time by dreaming up ways the restaurant could serve this boat dinner to its customers on the second floor - like flooding the entire downstairs until the boat reaches the appropriate elevation.
....
So, I was just psyched for a boat. I've never ordered a boat nor received sushi on a boat! Dave shot down my dreams in theorizing that they probably couldn't fit a boat on our small table for two. No one can destroy my sushi boat dreams!
... except for Zen. A big pouty face formed when the waitress brought our pile of beautifully fresh and thick cut fish on a boring white rectangular plate.
Alas, the fish consisted of the chef's freshest cuts: mackerel, whitefish, tuna, salmon; plus a maki of california and tekka. It was enough to fill us both without the need for a side of rice or other supplements, and for $40, you don't want to spend more. Next time, I will plan to wash this down with a bottle of Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc (a steal at $26 per bottle in terms of restaurant markups). Now that would have been a great combo with the mackerel.
Not a bad sushi stop for those who want a relaxing meal in a just-right sized restaurant without feeling like you tore a hole through your wallet (oh right, Dave paid...).
