New Deal Fish Market

Still good; always improving, in fact.  I'm intrigued by the latest addition of "GreeNoodle" packages; a healthy version of those instant ramen soups.  Kinda nifty, but if I had to suggest a flavor, I would say go for the plain ones.  The fish case seems to be loaded with more fish these days, too, but have no fear, the standard offerings are still there: sushi grade salmon and tuna, swordfish, jumbo shrimp, sea scallops, and oysters.  Some of the newcomers I've noticed are Hake loin and other parts, smelts, hamachi on occasion, whitefish, whole and prepared crab, etc.

I guess the sushi idea is catching on!  Sometime in the last year, New Deal stocked up (more so than before) on sushi-making supplies.  You can get everything here.  From rice to wasabi to the little bamboo sheets to seaweed to fish, of course, to soy sauce to pickled ginger.

I do miss the canned cherry tomatoes.... please return, my sweetness!

Last night I tried oysters!  $1.50 ea (PEI and Martha's Vineyard).  I got an oyster shucker for Christmas, so of course I had to try it out.  DEFINITELY ask for tips if this is your first time ... the only other suggestion I could offer is ... expect to use a serious amount of force, but (1) don't force it, and (2) don't give up! oh, and (3) use a freakin kitchen towel for protection!!!  And .... not sick yet.  Must be good!

Crap, yet another review of New Deal from Shaina G.

I couldn't help but mention that my dinner tonight was immediately followed by some tuna sashimi from New Deal.  I was nervous at first, but the difference between the sushi grade and other tuna offering was clear as day.  Fat from the Big Eye Tuna marbled between each bright red grain of tender raw meat.  At $24.99/lb I figured not such a bad deal if ordering a 1/4-lb for one.  So, why not?  New Deal even supplies wasabi and pickled ginger (had to ask for the ginger).  Score.

At home, I was scared to eat the meat.  Direct from the wrapping, it had that fish scent, but after a minute out of the wrap, the smell just went away.  Must have been the store smell secured within.  So, I sliced 'er up, tossed a little soy with a lotta wasabi in a little dish, and dabbed my meat in the concoction.

Af first bite, it was love all over again, reminding me of the first time I truly started to enjoy sushi, except it was TEN times better, thanks to the price cheaper than at a sushi restaurant and to the utter butter texture.  If I see Big Eye in there again, I will surely purchase and you should, too.

Although New Deal will change its features fishies on occasion, some items that continue to be on the shelves include:

Fresh lump crab (Jonah Crab) - $11.99/10-12 oz. container as of yesterday, but it's best shit ever (go ahead, give it a smell test) and makes a superior crab cake, although it's so damn good, I'd eat it plain.

Scallops - I'm not sure where these're from, it might change from time to time, but they are consistently delicious cooked just until opaque (not stark white) with some butter, salt, and pepper.  I always order a specific number rather than a weight.  This way, they always hand choose the biggest/consistently sized meats.  By the way, their scallops are always dry stored, meaning no extra heavy weight of water to add to your already-high cost.  All you pay for is tender deliciousness.

Also, last night I bought a pound of PEI Mussels, medium in size, clean, and all perfectly alive.  Each one snapped shut (except for one) as I checked their liveness.  Steamed in a heavy beer, these mussels rock.

Thanks to many excellent reviews, I decided to check this market out.  And, boy, I was not disappointed.  The fish really is so fresh it's still frickin moving (nicely put, Apollo).  My eyes were drawn to the piles of whole snapper and that ugly, but delicious monkfish, fish parts from salmon, tuna that I've never hear of (or seen), locally collected shellfish (oysters, mussels, clams).  I can't wait to cook up crab cakes and sear the scallops that I purchased for tonight!

Besides the fresh selection of fish, highly qualified fish mongers, and great service, I was pleasantly surprised to find other excellent products offered here to round out the store.  Including, but definitely not limited to: olive oil, cheese, breadcrumbs, Taza chocolate, and spices!

I will undoubtedly stop here for all of my protein needs from this point forward.

    UPDATED:
So, are oysters difficult to shuck?
    'Yes.'
Do I need a special tool for that?
    'Yes.'
    Can you ... show me?
    'How many do you want?'
How many does one pound buy me?
    'About four.'
    Ohhhh, no thanks.

Four for $9.99 puts you at $2.50 per oyster, or roughly equivalent to the price of freshly shucked oysters at any quality restaurant.  Just an FYI ...

Also, saw the biggest whole fish with a tongue larger than my own, I swear.  Two thoughts ran through my mind: whoa cool!! and eeewww

I'm constantly feeding a cold over here in Kendall.  Thankfully, there are plenty of places to help nurse me back to good health.  Case in point, #2 (see Abigail's for #1), Fuji Udon Tempura Soup.  I needed soup badly.  Went out for lunch by myself and was surprised at how tiny the venue was.  You enter on the widest side of the restaurant but it's not very deep...(people, please don't go in the side door in the middle of the winter.  Berrrrrsies).  Thankfully, the glass curtain walls brought in some light and helped to ease the claustrophobic feeling.

I looked online at the menu and made a mental note that the soup was $14. A bit more than what I want to spend at lunch, but I've seen worse.  And because  know nothing of this place, I kind of go in with low expectations.

Cozily situated in the cornermost seat at the bar with Kindle in hand, I hesitantly order green tea as I scan the menu of $3.5 specialty teas ...  say hi to the sushi-dudes; friendly guys.  The waiter has to squeeze to get to me ... maybe not the best layout for service, but I order quickly.  In a reasonable amount of time, server returns with a plate full of tempura shrimp and veg with a side of dipping sauce; and has to make a second trip just to bring the massive clay bowl of steaming hot clear broth udon soup with shitaake and crab floating on top whispering to me ... oh yah not what you expected huh?  ... nope.  Veg had eggplant, pepper, beans, sweet potato, and also two shrimps.  I am psyched.  And I have no idea what they put in that broth, maybe drugs, maybe alcohol; it had a kick; it wasn't your standard broth, that's for sure.  Or maybe it was, I just never got to experience a quality broth up until this point.  This was $14??

After consuming everything I realize that this was $14 well spent for a soothing lunch.  And it turned out that the tea was only $1.5.  I leave your standard tip over tax and leave spending $20.  Not something I'm gonna do daily, but I won't deny myself from deliciousness like that when the craving calls.

Leisure Station

Update - 1/23/2012
Guess who popped-up inside Leisure Station this year?  MOMOGOOSE.

It's kind of separate from it in that I don't think they are associated with Leisure Station and as a result, LS, has to observe hundreds of hungry Momogoose fans lining up for those delicious bites.  Momogoose has its own cash register and station inside a station, so as you can imagine, it's a bit toight.  But they do have a deal where you can add a Leisure Station tea for $3 to your meal (I haven't seen this done yet).

Anywho ... some words of note regarding the Momogoose:
+ It's not a truck and does not offer its truck prices
+ (Add $1-2 to what you're used to paying)
+ The selection of food seems less than that offered at the truck
+ The food is served hotter and even more deliciously at the pop-up
+ My fave is the BBQ chicken noodle soup served with loads of
+ hot BBQ chicken, skinny egg noodles, and a
+ hot tasty broth that goes easy on the salt.  Only $6.
+ Love the half-soup option for $3.  Choose from the selection of soups they have, but it's mini half size and to be honest, you're probably getting more noodle/protein to the ratio of broth.  We're talking good portions here.

Last week, I went 3 times and ordered different things.  The fave is spelled out above.  Mmmm.  I found that the rice/noodle container dishes were served colder than I'd like... Hence the lovely addition of broth to heat it all up for ya.

The staff at Leisure Station blended me a fine Lychee-Mango smoothie with those tasty pearls.  They even equip your plastic cup with a sealed cover that you get to STAB STAB STAB with a big fat straw!  [It's really great for stress relief]  Perfect for an afternoon break and a fine alternative to coffee (though they have coffee blends).  It's cold, creamy, and fruity, and fun to drink.  Unfortunately, as a lactard, I overdid it by ordering a large.  Knowing this now, I will always go for the smaller size and ultimately save myself $2.

They could do something with the interior...feels kind of like an internet cafe, but with really bad Wi-Fi access... and the decor is quite random... too small to call a restaurant, but with enough chairs and tables to eat in.  Yep, they have lunch boxes too (but why the heck do they cost so effin much?)

This is a great place to watch a big game if you're in the area.  Doesn't get super packed like the Remy's, but if you want to sit and eat, you should probably aim to arrive an hour before kick-off.  We got there 30 min ahead of the game, the key being that we got in; we also got a good space near the bar.

The best feature of this place is that there is a TV on every single wall; no.  Make that 5 TVs on every wall; so no place is a bad place for viewing.  One down side, for me anyway, was the loud ass sound system.  I get it; it's a big game and everyone wants to hear the commentary, but to the point where I think my ear drums are gonna blow and I can't even hear the person yelling next to me?

$5 Coors Light (it's all I had).

Sports bar in Southie that's not the Stadium.  Enough said, no?

It's spacious, the food is typical, the service is friendly enough, and there is a pretty sweet view of the harbor.  Sadly, I had to leave early after downing a plate of curly fries because for some reason that day I had been drinking since 2pm.  Frickin yelpers.

But come on.  It's a great departure from the Seaport bar next door and far more spacious and cheaper than ... oh wait, there aren't any other bars within a two block walking distance from this place.  Just make sure to bring your hat, scarf, gloves, and jacket when walking from the Silverline to the bar amidst large snow storms.  The ocean winds can be brutal!

The Boston Common Frog Pond

WINTER at Frog Pond = ice skating for thousands of tourists.  At only $5 for adult admission and zero bucks for kids, skating at this iconic location is a steal, but once you need skates (pretty crappy ones at that), you're out more than twice that ($9 for adult rentals, $5 for kid rentals).  Fortunately, the actual skating was 100% better than I expected, although I should mention that my expectations were extremely low...

I would guess for a beginner skater, this experience would be almost traumatizing:  death grip on the side walls, no skating props, kids and adults screaming past you as you try to keep your blades beneath you; freezing cold, hard hard HARD ice...

But as a more experienced skater, there is plenty of room to zoom around, people watch, get a little exercise, and just plain enjoy it until the Zamboni break (20 minutes for smoothing) which happens after maybe 40 minutes of skating.  The line, though long, and you'll want to prepare for the chill on non-sunny days, seemed to pass quickly; especially if you arrive during zamboni time.

Also, the amount of skate area does not equal the amount of pond area; they actually close up a ring on the interior of the pond, making a symmetrical oval rink.

SUMMER on Frog Pond = gross, imo.  I don't even like to think about it.

Old.  Dark.  Beer.  TVs.  Bar.  Dining.  Mmmm.

Dang, the fish and chips on a Tue night in January really hit the spot.  The haddock was battered and presented as about 5 or 6 nice 'n full 4-bite pieces with a side of piping hot steak fries.  The fish tasted very fresh, was served right out of the oven so the innards were nice and hot, the crunch was perfect (kind of a crumb-like batter versus a battery batter), and I was in fish & chip heaven.  The bottle of malt vinegar on the side was all mine and I ate practically everything.  The cost is slightly higher than I would expect to pay in a tavern, but the quality and quantity made up for it.

Props to the wonderful art on the walls and in my latte, the bright mornings, the friendly staff.   The unfinished look of the space itself screams for the featured art (nerd nouveau, well put, Damien) to carry it to a higher level, but the random permanent finishes of B&W patterns on the coffee bar (for me) clashes with the vibe and makes the unfinished look feel unintentional.

This establishment lends itself better to patient coffee appreciators and people who plan to stay for the long haul, not for the local business peeps.

As I frequent Voltage during the work week, I am busy and therefore wish to drink my coffee faster... and eat my breakfast sandwich faster (whose health factor is reflected in its unfortunately bland flavor... give me melted cheese and a little salt; something to hold this mammoth sandwich together!).

I guess I'm left wanting much more than the single brewed java and more than even the beautiful Iggy's bread.  As the art helps to elevate the feel of the space, may the coffee and food be elevated (by something more), too!

Kika Tapas

Kika is named and decorated for a movie starlet featured in such Spanish films as "Kika" and ... oh interesting ... you should google it.  The decor is super crazy bright and there are patterns and ways to mesmerize you all over the place.

The tapas menu is fairly short and priced high, but note that they offer skillets of Paella (rice based) or Fiduea (vermicelli based) in two different sizes/prices (party of 1-3, $32, or 4-6, $48) and three different flavors (tradicional, seafood, or veg).  Although I did not experience the dish last night, I will definitely return for a try.

Now, despite the short food menu, there is a nice list of cocktails, cava, rose, red, white wine, a selection of beer, and of course, sangria on tap.  I wouldn't agree with Paul R's opinion on the cost of drinks.  All of the cocktails were $10 or less and 2 for 2, were delicious (Basil Lime Gimlet and La Movida [woodford, sage, cherry preserves]).  I loved the drinks, very tasty.  So, sure, it adds up, but their prices are by no means the priciest I've seen or am willing to spend on a good drink.  They also serve their refreshing wine selection in those super fun shareable decanter/carafes that you can also get at Toro where you pour a tight stream of wine into your friends' mouths...

So, keeping the review low for now.  I'll be back for an update after I get food there.

Boomerangs

So, being one of those Cambridge locals means it takes a lot of effort to get out of the hood.  When Boomerangs showed up in the old Attic store, (a) I was psyched to get that weird place out of Central Square, but (b) uber confused ... never heard of it ... because I never knew it started in JP and what not... not such a fan of a banner for a sign.  Enter: friends of JP.  Visiting from out of town, these past-JP residents brightened from their hangovers (or was it mine) when they saw the sign.

I just thought it was a strange junk store... and don't get me wrong, it kind of is... but it's really more than junk.  It's cool junk that seems qualified to be brought to my home to be used as a container for my cat's food or wear around my waist at thrift store amazing pricing.  It's the Home Goods store of thrift shops, doing your home good, but more importantly, your wallet.

The find of the day, which I didn't purchase, was a $65 solid wood set of drawers.  It was one of those nice wide dressers holding two columns of 4 stacked drawers.  Really great condition and enormous enough for two.  And if weren't for the two column design, it would have been wide enough to pull a Kramer (when he hosted the Japanese businessmen in his apt).  It could use a little paint restoration, but looked like they pre-stripped it for you.  They also were selling a couple twin bed frames for $15.  $15!  Such a steal.

Such an appropriate store for our kooky square.

Who wouldn't want to know about this store?  I don't believe I've heard of anything like it.  Except for the daunting work Danger (with exclamation point in name)... it's really awesomer than I could imagine.

I had heard that they laser sh!t here.  But I didn't know what they lasered until entering -- carefully -- ever so carefully.  I also thought that you do the lasering yourself, but this is not the case.  Perhaps they would let you try it, but don't quote me on it.  If you're too scared to enter, check out the items on display on their storefront:

+ etched pint glasses
+ images lasered onto wood
+ laser cut metals
+ etched metal
+ laptops (kindles..hmmm)
+ word of ability to do some plastics, too
+ human flesh (not)

Your best bet is to stop in for a chat if you're thinking of having something lasered.  It seems that they can do it all and in a variety of sizes.  But if you're like me and aren't 100% sure what can go in a laser machine, just ask.  They will also do a custom design for you, but for cost savings I would suggest getting their email and sending a pattern to the scale that you wish to apply the laser (and provide your own medium).  So cool, really, and their lasering skills are almost better than yoda's.
