My friends and I were all visiting Portland and staying in an apartment right across from Miss Delta. We initially planned to get brunch at Gravy, but due to the long wait + freezing cold weather, we decided to check out Miss Delta. So glad we did!

Talk about a satisfying breakfast. We were seated right away (no wait, compared to 45 minutes? YES PLEASE), and the service was great, my fresh juice was delicious and the soul food-style breakfast offerings were tasty. I had the Chicken Fried Steak with cheese grits. The cheese grits were fantastic, the chicken fried steak was a little on the mushy side, but lord knows it was fresh. Overall I'd come back here. Such a quaint little neighborhood too!

I am so happy to say that I've finally found a stylist in San Francisco that I'm sticking with! After trying 3 other stylists in the city, I finally decided to check out Reconstruction Salon... a mere 3 blocks away from my apartment, and am so relieved that I've found someone who a.) understands my vision, b.) understands how to work with my crazy thick/wavy hair, c.) is super friendly and easy going. Ashley is great and I highly recommend her.

Best carne asada tacos I've ever had. EVER. Seriously. The margaritas are $4 during happy hour and don't come in the usual happy hour-sized teeny tiny glasses. Mmmm. The atmosphere was really chill but fun. Service was great. I can't wait to come back!

I had four hours to kill at the airport, so all I really wanted was a burrito and place to sit and eat it, so I went with Tequileria. Next time I know to go somewhere else.

First of all, the waitress I initially had was a cranky older woman who kept yelling at patrons to get out of her way. Then, she came over to take my order, I proceeded to order the breakfast burrito because it was 11am... that's breakfast time in Vegas, right? Nope. She told me they were no longer serving breakfast and then quickly walked away. So I sat there for another 5 minutes waiting. She didn't even ask me what I wanted to drink. Then, a jovial gal (who I'm assuming is the manager) came over, apologized and took my order.

I waited another 15 minutes or so for my chicken burrito. By this time I was starving. I dug right in and was totally disappointed with the quality of the chicken. Have you ever had canned chicken? That's what it tasted like. I finished it because I was too hungry to send it back. Bleh.

I finally gave in and bought the iMac I'd been coveting for a while but have been too frugal to purchase. But this weekend, I decided, the purchase needed to happen. So my roommate enthusiastically accompanied me to the Apple store and to my delight, the store was absolutely gorgeous. That staircase is fancy! The customer service is just phenomenal, and I should probably mention that the dude who helped me looked like Justin Long. Bonus? I think so. We took my shiny new iMac upstairs to be set up and so another really nice employee could show me the ropes. I've had my iMac for 2 days now and do not want to leave it's side. It's so awesome.

Swank Cocktail and Coffee Club

I've been working across the street from this place for over a year now and I have never stepped foot inside... until last week. My work day was done, but the mister had stuff to finish up before he could leave and get dinner, so instead of killing time at Starbucks (lord knows I don't need any more caffeine) I headed to Swank... 'cause mama needed a drink!

I'm giving Swank 4 stars mostly for the space. Swank is more of a lounge than a bar, and they're connected to the hotel next door (I think), so the furniture screams hotel lobby, but not in a bad way. The place is very well lit, so while I drank my "smart cocktail" (borrowing that term from Sex and the City), I read a book and enjoyed the fun 1960s jazz and pop music they were playing. It was a nice place to chill out by myself after the crazy work day - I don't think I'd suggest this place for group happy hour though.

I suggested this place for "date night" because I pass it almost every day to and from work and the the deep red and black interior was a'beckoning.

This place is feels very punk rock at the core, especially with the items on the menu named after rock and roll idols such as Iggy Pop and Ozzy Osbourne, but the place is anything but chaotic. Very relaxed vibes, great music selection and really great staff. I believe it was the owner who served us our meal (super cool tatted up Russian dude) and he was really affable and welcoming.

I ordered the Geisha which is made with grass-fed kobe beef, mushrooms, red bell pepper and gorgonzola. It was amazing! Next time I'll order it medium, but it was perfection. The mister ordered the Voodoo, which was the same thing basically, but made with Boar, sans bell pepper, add raspberry sauce. It was pretty amazing. We also shared the sweet potato fries... and next time I think I'll have to order my own! I just couldn't stop eating them. NOM.

Before leaving, the owner informed us that they were expecting a shipment of alligator meat, to which the mister responded "I love eating new animals." I do too. I will definitely be back.

Update - 1/6/2011
A family tradition of ours every Christmas is to drive around Victorville and look at all of the houses beautifully (or not so beautifully) decorated in lights. This year, before embarking on our little journey, we stopped by Starbucks to pick up some beverages in their drive-thru.

It was Christmas Eve, around 7pm (an hour before they were scheduled to close) and they were really busy. The gal working the drive thru was THE NICEST Starbucks employee I have ever encountered... and I worked at Starbucks! I'm sure she was tired and wanted to be at home with her family, but she was still able to be incredibly jovial and make our Christmas Eve even better. Thanks for all of your hard work!

I agree with the other reviewer wholeheartedly, although I like this Starbucks for a few additional/different reasons.

This Starbucks is about 5 minutes from my house and it is absolutely lovely inside. Every time I come here I wonder why it is so empty, while the overcrowded store on Bear Valley Rd is always so congested? I just don't get it. For one, the interior is WAY nicer and more modern, since it is a newer store (just opened a year or two ago I think). Secondly, their music selection is always perfect. Yesterday and today they provided a great mix of reggae and soul music. I didn't have to listen to my own music at all. The drinks are always perfect, they employees are super nice and the patrons are friendly as well (except for the random crazy people that walk in every now and then, but that's pretty standard for any coffee shop).

I love this Starbucks and hope to find stores like this in the future whenever I move away from the High Desert. Thanks for providing me with what feels like my own place of peace (and air conditioning). Kudos.

Subs

For some reason, whenever I get sick/hungover, my comfort food is a sandwich. I really don't know why. But since moving to the city, and not living near a Subway sandwich shop (which was where I used to pick up my sick day sandwiches back in So Cal), I've discovered Subs Inc., just a few bus stops away from where I live.

My staple is a BLT with avocado on a soft roll with cheddar added. The great thing about this place is that they stick the bread and cheese in the oven for a bit so the bread gets nice and warm and the cheese melts and makes me drool a little just thinking about it. Altogether a great sandwich.

The shop is very low key and the guys are not overly friendly, like most of the shops in Noe Valley which can be sickeningly sweet at times, even more so when you're not feeling well. These dudes are chill, straightforward, make your sandwich, give it to you, and you're on your way. I like this place.

Nopalito

My first attempt to eat at Nopalito was a few months ago. We showed up and the wait was 1.5 hours. Nope! We decided to chance it on a Sunday evening, and this time we were only given a 30 minute estimated wait time... which is a vast improvement! Also, it ended up only being around 10 minutes since we got to scoop up 2 seats at one of the larger family-style tables.

My drink was incredible. It was a sparkling white wine with mint and lemonade. Oh man. One of the best drinks I've had in this fab city.

For dinner, I ordered the mole poblano con pollo. Now, I don't know about other Mexicans (or, half-Mexicans), but in my family the mole is always spicy. At least a little bit. And that's what I was looking forward to. Instead, nothing. It was really bland. The thing that saved this dish for me was the amazingly tender chicken. Two thumbs up there. My partner-in-crime had the pozole and it was amazing. I'm totally ordering that next time.

All in all, I really liked Nopalito. The atmosphere was really friendly and fun, and I got really good vibes from all of our servers and the bartender. I will definitely be back.
