My girlfriend brings her shoes here after she's destroyed the soles and this guy does beautiful work repairing and resoling them. They look like a new pair of boots when he's done at a very fair price. Highly recommended.

Mexicali Restaurant

Mexicali is apparently under new management as of a month or two ago. The inside looks the same; I can't remember if the menu is the same as it was before.

Our dinner was pretty good. Typical Mexican. Nothing spectacular or original, but it sure was tasty. There's a giant list of combo dinners, and I think everyone ended up picking from that. They were all under or around $10, and were a solid value. Our margaritas were all strong and we each went for a second.

You know what? It's... Mexican (heh... see Pacifico). The food was good, the service was fine (free chips and salsa to start always sits well with me) and we ate our fill. We all left feeling fat... and sassy.

The amount of hype around all things with the Franks is a bit absurd. Regardless, dinner here was fantastic.

To start off we had a cheese, which was INSIDE OF ANOTHER CHEESE. It was phenomenal, and the bread that came with it was perfect. I had pumpkin ravioli in a parmesan sauce. It was amazing. My date had gnocchi something something, that was pretty good too.

The inside is pretty nice. A little tight, but overall it's pretty cute; a good date spot. Gets very busy, so go earlier in the week, earlier in the day, etc.

Dark, a little off the beaten path (compared to the typical Smith St. bar), no obnoxious Bud Light BEER SPECIALS signs, pool table in the back, and fair prices. It's what I want in a bar.

Ok listen. You never go to this place because it's always almost totally empty. The decor couldn't have less personality, and the atmosphere is a little... off.

But overall, I have to say I kind of like Raga. The food is typical Indian fare: nothing spectacular but still quite tasty. There aren't a lot of places in the Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens/Boerum Hill area that you can go to on a Friday or Saturday night and know that you can walk in and sit down right away, AND have a quiet conversation. That, on top of the value (the food being pretty good and the prices being pretty low) is why I'll still go back.

Zombie Hut

The tiki theme is a bit much, but it's still fun. Being able to grab a board game from behind the bar and play wherever you can find some space can be a big part of the enjoyment of the place. So can hanging out in the back, until they kick you out to keep the noise down for their neighbors.

One thing that gets my goat: there are no beers on tap. None. How can you possibly have a BAR and not have ANY BEER ON TAP.  That is weak sauce. I realize that the cocktails fit the theme/feel of Zombie Hut more, but it's a joke to not have anything on tap, cause if you don't want an absurd drink and you don't want to pay $6 for one bottle of something, than you're only drinking PBR.

That said, a good time is usually to be had here.

La Bagel Delight

I used to work around the corner, and I enjoy a good bagel.

I'm not a fan, for a few reasons. I once ordered a chicken sandwich that had all sorts of other things on it. Bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce... okay maybe that was all. Anyway, they got my order confused, then treated me like I was an idiot and said the wrong thing when it was the only thing I had ever ordered from there (other than a simple bagel w/ butter), and it ended up taking legitimately 15-20 minutes. When I finally got it and was in the park about to eat it, I looked at the chicken and it looked a bit shiny/raw, but I thought, "Hey, what do I know?" Which generally, is not a lot. So, I ate it, like a fool, and paid for it the rest of the day. Ugh, so sick.

Another thing, I hate about this place is the way they treat customers. They try to play this, "What's goin' on pal, whaddya need?" with people like they are buddies with everyone, but it's so insincere it's really really irritating. It's kind of hard to explain. I'm sure if you need a bagel and you're in DUMBO where your options are pretty limited, it's not gonna stop you, but... I kinda hate these guys.

I'm not a pizza snob of any sort, but we decided to order a couple pies and it was pretty disappointing. Too chewy, the sauce was really boring... I kind of ate a slice or two and then couldn't remember what just happened. On a weekday!

My roommate and his girlfriend end up here almost every weekend for their lunch special (soup, rice, salad, entree, salad) so eventually I had to see what all the fuss was about.

Simply put: it's a good lunch deal, which you normally can't get on a weekend day at other restaurants in the area. It's not a ton of food, but it's enough and it's tasty. I'll be back.

Ate here once, everyone said their food was "alright." It's... mexican. The options are kind of interesting, but also kind of limited. Nothing to write home about.

I usually end up here to satisfy a margarita craving towards the end of a night out because it's so close. The outdoor area is nice to share a drink and hang out with some friends. The margaritas are hit-or-miss, sometimes strong and sometimes just tasting like margarita mix. Which brings me to the point that a "blackberry margarita" means it has blackberry syrup squirted into it. It really can't compare to just throwing some fruit into a blender though. Oh well. It's close.
