How can you go wrong with an all vegan, worker owned cafe? This place is super awesome! From their $3 bottomless cup of coffee, to their discounts on prisoner letter writing night.  They have a good selection of political and left leaning books near the counter for sale in case you need something new and exciting to read.

My favorite dish here is definitely the Black Dragon Noodle bowl with tofu! it's only $6 and is enough for two meals, or one really long work session.  Don't be intimidated by this place, the staff is super nice and the food is amazing.

I am from Buffalo, NY and have been looking for a replacement for my favorite grocery store, Wegmans, since i moved to Portland.  While i don't think anything will ever truly compare, New Seasons comes very very close.  I really like the fact that they sell healthy and organic groceries but you can also buy stuff like ramen,  pepsi, and or cheap non-organic salsa.  It's like the best of both worlds!  They have a really good selection of vegan food, especially meat substitutes such as tempeh, deli meats, tofu, etc...

My favorite thing about New Seasons is their generous food samples.   They usually have a rotating sample table in the front of the store, bread samples, and a couple fruit samples.  In addition to that, you can ask for a sample for anything in the cold salad case and the super friendly and helpful employees will gladly give you one.

While I admittedly have never bought anything from Sock Dreams for myself, it has been a great place to purchase gifts.  They have a very wide selection of, you guessed it, socks!  Thigh highs, ankle socks, and everything in between fill their cute little store.  I had visited their old location on Powell and I think their new location is a better fit for them.

The staff is always very helpful and very nice.  I was a little disappointed by their small selection of vegan socks (without wool), but they at least had some.

This library is amazing!  Everything from the expansive catalog to the beautiful building to the outdoor benches on the north and south sides.  It's hard not to look at the beautiful stairs as you walk up to one of the many sections of the library.  What was most impressive to me was their huge zine collection.  They literally have 100's of zines you can read and check out.

The staff here is always really nice and helpful.  It can sometimes be a long wait if you need a computer, but they have free wifi if you bring a laptop.  Even though i feel bad using them, the self checkout machines are really quick and easy to use.

While this isn't the most convenient location to where i live, i often go out of my way to visit the Central library because it's always an enjoyable experience.

I've only been here once but was very satisfied with my food. I got the daily vegan special for $5 and it was enough for 2 meals. The food was very flavorful and filling.  Despite what i've heard about waiting a long time, i thought the wait was reasonable i went during lunch time.  The staff was super nice and was very helpful making sure everything i ordered was vegan.  I can't wait to go back again!

Vegetarian House

I've tried this place three times and have been disappointed every time.  The first two times i went for the lunch buffet.  Both times they were serving the same bland fake meat products.  All of the food was luke warm and not memorable at all.  None of the dishes were labeled at the buffet table which was a bummer because i like to know what i'm sampling.

The third time i went for dinner and ordered a fake chicken meal.  The meal was okay, but nothing to write home about.  I left very unsatisfied which is a shame because I had high hopes for this restaurant after it was highly recommended to me.

The IPRC is like a playground for zinesters.  Not only do they have one of the largest and most well organized zine libraries in the country (and maybe the world?), but they have all the tools you need to make a zine for a very reasonable yearly membership.  They have computers, photocopiers, long armed staplers, a letterpress studio, paper cutters, and so much more!  They also have workshops on various topics every month that range from free to $50 on subjects such as Zines and the Law, Letterpress 101, In Design, and so much more.

If you're curious about the IPRC, twice a month they have an open house where the director of the center takes you on a tour and talks about the facilities. I highly recommend attending.

I'm always searching for comfortable coffee shops to work at on my laptop.  So far, this is one of my favorites in Portland.  The wide variety of seating options are excellent.  From small tables to couches to comfy chairs to stools at the window, 3 Friends has it all.  The overall feel of this coffee shop is really inviting and screams "come in and stay for hours".

The staff is really nice and helpful.  The drinks are also reasonably priced and delicious.  I was disappointed that they didn't have vegan cream cheese for their bagels, but the tofu pate they have for them is so delicious i stop internally complaining after the first bite.

The Looking Glass Bookstore - CLOSED

It's hard to not notice this bookstore when passing by.  The big red caboose makes it stand out like a sore thumb.  What lies inside the doors is a really nice local book store.  The caboose area is a well stocked children's section.  Just beyond that room is the rest of the bookstore which is small but well stocked.  They always have a good selection of local interest books which is important for small bookstores.  My favorite thing about this place is they have a back patio with a nice little garden to read your newly purchased books in.

Small independent bookstores are a dying breed, but it's good to see this one still alive and kicking.

The world needs more feminist bookstores.  In Other Words is a great place to buy books/zines about feminism, women's studies, and women's issues.  The staff is always very helpful and nice.  In addition to shopping there, i have been to a couple events hosted there.  The monthly Dirty Queer night is an open mic for all things "dirty" (ie sexual).  I also went to a Stich N' Bitch last week and found it quite enjoyable and hope there are more in the future.
