Le's Alterations

Category: Sewing & Alterations

In short: one of the worst businesses I've ever encountered, not only because of the shoddy work but because of their terrible business practices.

If you care about your clothes, don't bring them here.  My lesson learned is to pay a little more for trustworthy alterations.

The alterations:
I needed a hem and taper on a bridesmaid dress.  It came back with iron streaks down both sides and uneven and bumpy hemming along the bottom and sides.

And worse, the experience.  After initially dropping off the dress, I had to go back three times.

Re-visit #1:
- I went to go pick up the dress, and they handed me the dress and expected me to pay right away.  They didn't mention any of the ironing damage, and they seemed reluctant to let me try it on.  I insisted, and I was really upset when I saw the damage on both sides.  It was so visible, and the fabric was definitely ruined.
- At first, the owner played dumb and said they couldn't see anything.
- Then he acted confused and said he didn't know how that could happen.
- After about 10 minutes, he said he could give me half off of the alteration.
- Because he didn't want to pay for ruining the dress, he told me to give him a few more days to try to get it dry cleaned.  If it didn't fix the damage, then he said he would pay for the dress.

Re-visit #2:
- There was no change to the damage.  Dry cleaning can't really help fabric scalds and bad hemming.  No surprise.
- Now he refused to pay for the dress, saying that he already paid for the dry cleaning bill.
- Then he denied that he could see any damage on the dress.
- After the thirty minutes of FRUSTRATION, he said the only way he would pay for the dress is if I went and got my friends and brought them in to prove that other people could see the damage.
- When I refused to bother my friends when the damage was obvious, he said I would have to go to the dress shop (in San Francisco), get it in writing that the dress was damaged, then bring it back to him.

Re-visit #3:
- I was so frustrated with this guy that I actually did get take it back to the store.  The seamstress at the wedding dress store actually gasped when she saw the dress, so I did get it in writing that it was damaged.
- I went back to the alterations store just for more stubborn retorts from his side, and no resolution.

I got no apologies, no honesty from this guy -- just denial, insults, frustration, a ruined dress, and a lot of wasted time.

I met the guys who started this website while grabbing some food in the Mission.  They were there to scout out the food and meet the chefs, and I'm glad I got the chance to learn about what they're working on.  They partner with chefs from well-known restaurants in the area and focus on local and sustainable ingredients in their menus.  Like most SOMA residents, I'm pretty familiar with all the run-of-the-mill food ordering websites, so it was refreshing to learn that there are new and better options out there.

I decided to give them a try and ordered lunch for our office through mealnextdoor.  It was easy to order and pay online, and we got much better food for relatively the same price as what we usually order (it came out around $11/person).  I got some props for not ordering from CPK yet again, and everyone was happy that we got real food instead of dressed-up take out.

I just wanted to evangelize a bit because I had a great experience with these guys.  The food was great, and I like knowing that I could trust the ingredients and chefs behind it.  Until next time!

First things first, I am in no way an expert on Mexican food.  All of my SoCal friends assure me that I don't know what I'm missing, so I know my exposure to really good Mexican food is pretty limited.  So take what I say for what it is.

Tidbits:
- I got the simmered chicken in my burrito.  Pretty moist, but could be more seasoned.
- Like the other reviews have said, great service during the lunch rush when it comes to speed.
- I really hate cilantro and requested none of it in my burrito.  But alas, had to pick a bunch of it out.
- The burritos here are JUICY!  Good for taste, bad for whatever clothes you are wearing.  Grab a stack of napkins.

The two things that really matter to me when it comes to a good burrito are GOOD MEAT and SPICINESS.  I liked the meat, but there was nary a spicy bite to be found.  :(

They only have bottles of their own salsa in the restaurant, but it does nothing to add a kick!  I wanted to run home with my burrito and douse it with Tapatio.  Next time.

Chocolate Sushi and Tofu House - CLOSED

It's apparent even from the name of the restaurant -- if you're not sure what kind of Asian food you want to eat, Chocolate Sushi slash Tofu House is a good choice.  Not sure how the chocolate part fits in, but I guess that's another story.

I ate here with my dad because I wanted tofu soup and he wanted sushi.  Great compromise.  The only catch is that I don't think they do either one very well.  If I had to choose one, I'd say stick to the Japanese cuisine when you order.

I got the dumpling tofu soup, and it was blah.  I usually can't tell the difference between most tofu soup restaurants because I haven't tasted glaring missteps, but this one had a really weird and sour aftertaste with every spoonful.  The only thing I liked about it is that it had rice cake balls (dduk) in the soup, which was a nice addition.

My dad got a dinner plate, where you can pick two items.  He picked sushi and sashimi, and the portions he got were tiny!  I guess you are usually supposed to pick ton katsu or one of the other choices, then add either sushi OR sashimi.  So don't get both... you get a bit jipped.

So the food wasn't amazing, but hey... points for the convenience factor?

The place itself is great, with modern decor, lots of seating, and good service.  Note: they do have low-sodium soy sauce in the back, you just have to ask for it!

Only come here after you've had a few drinks!

The Chinese food is just average enough to be delicious when you're drunk.

Saigon Sandwich

You have no idea how long I've been craving a good Vietnamese sandwich.  So when I saw Saigon Sandwiches on The Big Eat SF list (#22), I jumped at the chance to cross this one off my list.

It's a tiny shop with two ladies working behind the counter, and you can tell that they know what they're doing.  There were a few people in the shop already, but they were served really quickly.

I got the roast pork sandwich (with no cilantro of course), and it was so good.  It's really flavorful, and I really liked that the pickled veggies were a bit spicy too.

My friend and I had a bit of a brain fart when we ran out of the car with just our credit cards, and we found ourselves with only $1.50 in cash between the two of us after ordering the $3 sandwich.  Fail.

My friend ran back to the car to get some cash, but the woman at Saigon Sandwiches just gave me the sandwich and took what I had.  I still feel terrible, but they are so incredibly nice!

5 stars for the food, and 1 more if I could for unexpectedly great service!

La Taqueria

We stopped by La Taqueria to fulfill #3 of The Big Eat SF with the carnitas taco.

The taco was pretty bland and run of the mill.  I usually like really simple tacos (this one had pork, pinto beans, and salsa), but the meat wasn't flavorful enough to hold its own.

It left me wanting to douse it with some hot sauce, but there wasn't any around.  There are bottles of green sauce at each table, but it's more savory than spicy.

I feel bad that my impression of this restaurant comes down to the one taco I had, but it is one that they are supposed to be known for.  No go for me!

Tomi Sushi

Tomi Sushi is my new favorite Japanese restaurant around.  It's authentic and traditional, and the fish is incredibly fresh.  I would go there every night if my wallet and my waistline could handle it.

*TIP: Make reservations before you go for sure.  The line gets really long, and the restaurant is pretty small.

One of the many great things about this place is that there's a huge variety of solid dishes to order.  I've found that with a lot of other Japanese restaurants, I know I'd only go back for the sashimi, only the rolls, or what have you.  But Tomi Sushi has a great selection with both raw and cooked fish.

Here's what we had:

+ Tai sashimi:  This dish was tasty and beautiful.  They deep fry the rest of the fish, and use it as a bed for the sashimi.  Eat up the deep fried goodness, it's all edible and delicious.
+ Aji tataki:  Another beautiful dish.  I love how Japanese chefs use the whole fish!  This dish had a pretty big portion of sashimi for an appetizer.
+ Tai miso soup:  Miso soup full of chunks of fish!  Best idea ever.
+ Hamachi kama:  One of my favorite fishes, raw or cooked.  Solid dish.
+ Extra special chirashi:  Tomi Sushi has the BEST tamago, and I think it says a lot about the chef.  Great variety of sashimi, all super fresh.
+ Agedashi tofu:  To be honest, this is the only dish I could've done without.  It was good, but not as stellar as everything else we had.

Tsunami Mission Bay

In short: pricey with very small portions.

The good.
+ Out of the sashimi we tried, I liked the the albacore and butterfish the best.
+ I really like the decor of the restaurant itself, and the waitresses are pretty friendly.

The bad.
- Our food came out really, really slowly.  If you're hungry or more pressed for time, ask them to bring out your rolls/dishes as they're made.  I think it took forever because they waited to bring it out when everything was made.
- None of the rolls we ordered were very memorable or flavorful.  There's not much in each roll, and each piece is so tiny!

I just moved really close to Tsunami, so I was hoping it'd be a good place to go regularly.  But I'm pretty disappointed, and I don't think it's worth the price to go back.

Yogurtland

My friends and I get yogurt more often than I'd like to admit.  We usually end up going to Yogurtland because it's close to home, the yogurt is pretty standard, and it's easy on our wallets.

I've written a review for the Yogurtland on Stevens Creek, and there are some interesting flavors here that the other location doesn't have, like cookies and cream.  Some of the new flavors are not so good, like lemon lime and pomegranate raspberry.  And they don't have the taro flavor here, unfortunately.

But I have to say that I prefer this location!  There's more seating inside, and there's no credit card minimum.
