This beautifully ornate private social club impressed me not only with their friendly staff but also their great food and service.

I was there for a private function and had drinks, hors d'oeuvres and dinner there. All was very tasty and the service was excellent.

I have been here twice for dinner at a large private function and the decor of the place is traditional, old world, and beautiful. Gentlemen must wear jacket and tie (no exceptions!) so all guests must be forewarned accordingly.

The food there was passable, and both times that I was there, service was rushed and gruff. Their waitstaff service was definitely sub-par using any yardstick, no less for a private club.

If not for the saving grace of the historical beauty of this place, and relatively affordable banquet menu pricings, the food and service would not normally be something a host would feel inclined to repeatedly host a function there.

Pilsener Haus & Biergarten

This biergarten is about 1/4 the size of Zeppelin Hall in Jersey City, and while the beer options are plenty though not as extensive as ZH, the food options are infinitely better. Several dishes we tried tasted good.

It has a similar concept with long wooden tables and benches. There are 2 indoor rooms and 1 outdoor area which is small but nice in the summer time.

If you go there in the afternoons on the weekends, the number of kids there can almost outnumber the number of adults. There are many families there that come together at that time, it seems. So if you wish to avoid the screaming, crying kids, go there after sundown.

This is great addition to Hoboken!

Update - 11/13/2011
They have changed their menu and it's a great disappointment. Every dish I loved about this place is no longer on the menu. This used to be one of our favorite places and we would go there once or even twice a week (people I know would know to find us there after work), but now we will never return again.

For me, most bars have similar options with regards to beers, so the differentiating factor besides ambiance is the food. I care about tasty food, deeply. So, compared to its peers with similar beer selection, this would be a pass for me these days. Sad!

This bar has amazing food! I go there almost once a week. This place actually serves my favorite pizza. It is a square thin crust pizza and I usually make my own with artichokes, pine nuts and roasted garlic -- magnifique! I don't recommend the healthy crust (whole wheat -- I think i makes the pizza taste wierd).

Their Siena wings are very tasty. Plus, their sweet potato fries are the best I've eaten anywhere - I think it's beer-battered. They used to have a miso cod fish and it was out of this world, I miss that dish.

The service there is good and so is their drink selection, but the most amazing thing at this place is that just about any food item you order off the menu is really well done.

The Melting Pot

I have been to this restaurant a number of times over the years. They have recently changed their "Big Night Out" portion of their menu. They promote it as the one to get because they actually marinate the items in that menu.

We didn't get the new bundled menu as there were many things included that we either didn't like or couldn't eat (e.g. shrimp). So we ordered the a la carte fondues and the server told us that those items on the menu were not marinated. The 9 oz filet mignon for $35 was completely unmarinated and essentially cooking it in the fondue pot amounts to boiling a nice piece of steak. While the coq au vin broth we chose was well-flavored, the lack of marinating of the steak still rendered it disappointing. We could have ordered a $35 steak at a nice steak house and it would have tasted better because it would be prepared better and actually prepared for us!

We had the artichoke spinach cheese fondue - it was quite garlicky, which we enjoyed. We have also tried the Swiss cheese fondue and Wisconsin cheese fondue and of those two, I prefer the Swiss cheese fondue. I quite like the artichocke spinach one with the breads and tortilla chips, but this one doesn't quite taste as good with the green apples (which goes well with the Swiss cheese).

The chocolate fondue at the end makes it a belly-busting meal, so we often skip that with some regret later (due entirely to pure greed, of course). We find that if the plate came with more fresh fruits (e.g. strawberries, bananas) than rice crispy treats, we would enjoy it more and feel less bloated afterwards.

This is definitely not the place to dine if you are in a hurry. You are often waiting around for the pot to get hot and boiling, so devote some time to some leisurely dining at any fondue place.

As a party of two, we were unfortunately seated at a table of 4 with a wooden divider with holes in it mounted to the table, separating us for another couple. My husband declared that we will never come here again as we didn't pay over $100 for the meal to share a table with someone.

There is another fondue place in Edgewater that is more affordable and has not seated us with other people at the same table. Looks like we'll be going there instead of this place now.

I had the lobster egg foo young which was extremely tasty. My husband absolutely loved the unique dessert "duck a la plum". He said it's the best thing he has eaten. The Asian fusion menu is both tasty and creative. The wine selection was good too. We'll definitely be back!

The decor, service and ambiance of this place is nice. The food was also pretty good. We tried the lollipop chicken (tasty) and kumamoto oysters (OK) as appetizers. My husband enjoyed his filet mignon. He swapped the green beans for spinach and those were done well. I particularly liked the layered au gratin potatoes on his plate. I had the rainbow roll which had a very tasty sauce on the side and the other condiments on the plate was very fresh and tasty too (ginger and preserved vegetables). His choice of the meritage wine was good and I enjoyed the Hana Awaka sparkling sake. We did not try the dessert but there were only 3 on the list, which seemed like a very short list for dessert.

The only kink to the experience was the 20% service charge that was pre-added to the bill, even though there were only 2 of us (not a large group). We started writing in our own tip on the tip line and almost paid 40% of tip accidentally! Luckily, we started wondering how our bill racked up so high and realized the tip that was added in beforehand. With tax and service, our bill came to around $120 for the two of us.

This is a fabulous place to listen to live jazz music over dinner or just drinks at the bar, without getting rushed out after a set (think Birdland or Iridium).

The food here is not overly expensive and is tasty enough. I've been here in a large group and just two people, and always have a wonderful time. It's close to the PATH station and subway stop - really convenient to get to.

I am a fan of their mac & cheese, but not their pizza. First, I should mention that I am not usually a mac & cheese fan as I find the dish to be rather boring (the whole dish is the same thing) but their mac & cheese is done well enough (baked to a nice crisp up top) that I would actually eat it.  There was enough soft, velvety cheese, flavor and crispiness to it so that every bite was slightly different, offering some form of variety in this basic dish. The ambiance is that of a pizza place - not the place to bring your first date.

Chicken Factory

The logo and name of this place doesn't strike you immediately as Korean cuisine, but the small tag line under their logo mentions it. Given that I'm not Korean, I don't know if the food here is necessarily authentic. Nevertheless, the 2 dishes we tried were good. We had the chicken drumsticks (both flavors -- garlic and sweet & spicy), and the spicy was a bit too much for me (but I can't eat much spicy foods) so if you can't take spicy foods, avoid that. The garlic flavor was good -- not too garlicky at all. We had the beef and rice dish (forget its name) and it was tasty.

The con about this place is that the food takes a long time to get served as they cook it when you order. Hence, go there when you are starting to feel hungry, not when you're already starving!
