My wife was looking for a particular kind of Audi, she came here first. The sales staff was beyond incompetent- it was like they didn't care whether she bought a car from them at all. The salesman flat out told us that finding the kind of car she wanted was "impossible" and that she would have to 'wait till next year" to find one...

Welll... two days later my wife found the car herself at the Escondido Audi dealership, went there and bought it. This dealership sucks.

Ronald Reagan Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

I had to come to the Ronald Reagan Court House and Federal Building for a mandatory CJA training (don't ask!) Couple of observations- first google maps got this place wrong- it sent to the older federal building which is about two-three blocks away.

The Court House itself is enormous- like 10 stories tall- and sparkling new- hmmm... Orange County has an enormous, new federal court house. And why, might I ask? It's not really a high volume federal court. Anyway... Three stars!

Yum Yum Donuts

I had a donut/iced coffee here on my way to Federal Court down the street. It was pleasant and hygenic. I ordered a iced coffee, said "no" when she asked me what flavor syrup I wanted and THEN I had to stop her from filling the coffee with mocha mix. People: Iced coffee is perfect by itself. The donut was fine- undistinguished but fine.

It would be easy to trash this place b/c it's in the gaslamp, but the manager, Erica, used to manage the beauty bar during its brief hey day, so she brings more sophisticated booking then pretty much any other venue in the area. Still a gaslamp club, but at least they have good music on occasion. If I was returning I would likely try to arrange some kind of bottle service or whatever just so you could have someplace to sit and not have to deal with all the douche.

Extreme Pita

This is squarely in the "no-bro" district, but I will occasionally venture this way for a filing at the Court of Appeals @ 750 B st, or the Union Bank central branch @ 500 B st.

My regular veggie delight pita was well sufficient for noon-day repast: Filling, but not calorie intensive. I added a small scoop of feta and a smidge of vinaigrette for flavor, but otherwise it was about as healthy as you can be.

Deducting one star for the surly counter guy and the fact that the clerk "explained" how to open the wrapper. Madam, I am not a five year old, unfamiliar though I may be with this establishment. Good day.

But this will be my no bro go to no doubt.

The UPS Store

How is it possible I'm first on this place? This is the UPS store at street level @ 501 W. Broadway. I come here to mail a package on occasion, typically when I'm returning something that may have been sent ups, or when I'm walking between my wife's office and mine (it's on the way.) This place always, always has ridiculous attitude, the staff is unfailingly smirky and smug and I'm not sure why because, after all, this is a UPS store. Whenever I'm in here it feels like a bad Chris Kattan-starring SNL skit from the early 90s. But this is the local UPS store so what can you do?

Continental Dry Cleaners

Update - 7/13/2009

Long story short, stopped using this place months ago b/c problems with losing clothes and not actually cleaning clothes at times. My present dry cleaners went on vaca for july so i went back here b/c it's on my way home from work- first time back they lose yet another article of clothing. wah-wah.

It's a decent dry cleaners.

Bonus: If you are a hobo and you want to drink your wine and/or dumpster dive in the dumpster that is shared with the pizza restaurant next door, duck around into the parking lot area. It's sheltered from pedestrian view and the parking lot is low traffic so you can pull a half eaten pizza out of the trash, uncork your enormous bottle of wine and have a little hobo picnic!

Saks Fifth Avenue

This is a platonic ideal of "snooty department store" but the location at the "top" of Union Square literally keeps the crowds away. Never crowded in my experience, the stuff here is expensive but "fashionable" according to any reasonable definition of the word.
