The interior decorating firm hired to create the "Hot Bird look" aimed for functional, clean, and a little "old fashioned." It comes off as sterile and theatrical. I half expect a musical featuring boys on fixies to come wheeling out from the back and start singing about their mustaches.
The outdoor area is ... a stark space with picnic tables. Biggest feature: it's outdoors. Snooze.
They serve up food from a trailer they probably bought from the Habana Outpost junk yard. I can only speak for the bratwurst ($6 - flavorless) and the rice balls (a flavorless ripoff ($6.00 for 4 ping pong sized balls)). Menu is nearly impossible to read as it's written in black marker over masking tape that's adhered to a metal barrel). Why would they do this? Because it's "cool." Metal barrels are cool. Metal barrels are industrial. Metal barrels are honest. Hot Bird honest. Hot Bird cool.

Luigi's Pizza

These five stars reward what was the finest pie I've had in recent memory: a simple mozzarella, tomato sauce, basil, and olive oil wonder. The basic. No frills, just staggeringly good. It brought conversation to a halt. In order to replicate this, you must order a fresh pie and eat it fresh from the oven.

Beer Table nailed it. Cozy, inviting, unpretentious. An eclectic range of beers and knowledgeable staff. The barkeep casually approached our table and described the different beers on draft with an astonishing array of adjectives. Quite helpful and, lo, the beer was good.
I'm not sure what's worse:
- The aquarium in the corner, green with algae
- The server smacking gum as he placed the plates in front of us
- The awkward arrangement of tables such that every seat is uncomfortable
- The blandess of decor and of food
- The insult of having to pay for any of this
It's sort of like one of those places you'd find in a suburban mini mall nestled between the "Copy Mat" and "Mike's Pet Supply." I think the only positive thing about Balaka is that it doesn't make you ill and it's sort of so hopeless it's endearing.

I've not been to their location but I had the joy of consuming their Pugliese at Sweetwater. It's moist with a gentle crust and the perfect dusting of flour. Outstanding!

The friendly teenaged hostess greeted us at the door and forgot about us as she wandered away...
We sat down of our own volition and were forgotten by our server...
A scowling waterboy filled our glasses but forgot to refill them...
Eventually the teen came over and we ordered some "smashes" but they forgot one of the orders when the food came out...
They also forgot to properly heat the "smash." And they also forgot that something called a "smash" already has a name: hamburger.

I'd read all the negative reviews here on Yelp! but since they had such a great price on a Specialized Langster and I already knew that I wanted to get it, I went to the shop anyway.
It ended up being one of the best bike store experiences I've had in years. The service was prompt, attentive, and considered. Other bike stores I've been on have slapped me on a bike and tried to push me out the door. At Bicycle Habitat we came to the conclusion that the bike that best fitted me was not in stock. It was quickly ordered, fitted, and I got a lot great tips and good advice.
I can't speak highly enough of this store.
