Michelle was my midwife's apprentice, but she really did the work of a full midwife (which she now is). She's unbelievably knowledgeable, funny, supportive, and just awesome. (Running out of superlatives, sleep deprived brain kicks in.) You couldn't go wrong with having Michelle take a part in your pregnancy and birth!

I can't speak highly enough of Nancy and Ami. They were amazing  prenatally and helped turn my nightmare preecclampsia induction labor in the hospital at 37 weeks into a wonderful experience with their knowledge and support. (Michelle Welborn, who now has her own practice, gets big ups too.) They are that perfect blend of practical, knowledgeable and nurturing. They are big fans of science and hospitals when necessary, which was perfect for us, but I'm sure they can go hippie with the best of them, too.

We still keep in touch and I will love them forever! They will be the second to hear the news after my husband if we have another kid :-)

Just wanted to add my voice to the choir! These guys are fantastic, and cloth diapering is a breeze thanks to them. Plus, the customer service is top notch--they go out of their way to be helpful.

A few tips: order stuff from their online store and they'll deliver it with your diapers. (If your kid soaks through at night, Fuzzi Bunz all-in-one pocket diapers are a fantastic supplement to the cotton, and they carry them in the online boutique!)

STOKED to have this place in my neighborhood. I love that it's tucked away in the back of Tony's Market, I love the two funny guys who run the place (The Click and Clack of sandwich making), and, of course, I love the sandwiches. Delicious food, local and organic ingredients, and Dynamo is across the street. Oh, and Tony's Market is pretty great, too!

Ok ok, I'll jump on the fanwagon...this place is great. AMAZING donuts, good coffee, friendly baristas and just a nice aesthetic. I love walking past this place (um, stopping for a donut of course!). I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it because the first time I went they had a huckleberry donut, just for the mama of a little boy named Huck.

Avril Swan, MD

 Update - 5/3/2009
Dr. Swan is now my son's pediatrician as well as my doctor, and I'm so happy to have her nearby. She takes the time to answer all questions, no matter how silly-new-parent they are, and has a really great way of passing information along. I have great memories of my doctor when I was little, so I'm thrilled to have her (and her partners in the practice) to take care of my family. This is the kind of family practice I used to fantasize about, and it's great to know it exists!

I love Dr. Swan! She's super friendly and competent, and the office is the first doctor's office I've been to that was a pleasure to be in. You feel like you have a real friend on your side (who happens to have a medical degree), which is the best thing you could ask for. I was just there for a general check-up, but she took a lot of time to talk to me about my medical history and offer advice. Plus you can email her! She's well worth the extra money you pay for out-of-network (the office doesn't take insurance but fills out the paperwork for you to submit for reimbursement).

We saw Dr. Zaphiris a few times for well-baby visits for my infant son, and like everyone else in this practice, she's awesome. (I gave her four stars just because I've only met her twice.) Very grounded and relaxed, and equally knowledgeable about western and holistic medicine. I'm so happy to know there are three great family doctors I can turn to with any problems! (Plus, house calls for a newborn are a godsend.) I feel really safe in Dr. Zaphiris' hands.

Daphne Miller, MD

I can only give her four stars because I've only met her once, but she came to our house on a Sunday for a home visit to see our infant son (one of the other doctors in her practice, Dr. Swan, is my doctor, but she was out of town) to check up on his weight gain after the birth. She's incredibly knowledgeable, both about holistic medicine and, of course, traditional Western medicine. And she's definitely the most stylish doctor I've ever met :-) For my personality, Dr. Swan is a little more relaxing (I need someone to keep me calm about my little one's health!!), but Dr. Miller is full of energy and great advice.

If you're looking for a great prenatal massage and don't need a high-end spa experience, you should definitely give Carole a call! My birth prep teacher gave Carole double stars as a recommendation, so I called her when my back pain was driving me nuts. After one session, it was way less, and after two, gone. She works out of her house and has kids (you can hear them running around when they're home), so if that would bother you, try somewhere else. But her hours are really flexible and the work is absolutely top-notch. This is not a wimpy prenatal massage! She really understands bodies and has a great pregnancy pillow set up on the table so even you can lie on your stomach.

This place is chaotic and definitely lacks an elegant atmosphere, but they have a TON of stuff, and the salespeople we talked with were really friendly, knowledgeable, and opinionated (a plus in my book). Give yourself a little extra time to to wander around and find a free salesperson and you'll be glad you did! We went in knowing very little about strollers and car seats and came out very pleased with our purchase. The best part was that even though our design-snob souls yearned for one of the more elegant (and ridiculously expensive) brands like the Stokke or Bugaboo, with the help of our saleswoman we found a great-looking stroller that cost 1/4 of the price and helps our ultimate goal of buying the minimum of baby stuff. I loved that she didn't try to talk us into more accessories and more expensive products!
