Dover Mall

Perhaps my jadedness is showing but I visited this mall recently and didn't see a single reason to shop there. There are not many stores and even the food court selection is limited. Naturally, parking was plentiful. If I had to shop in Dover, I'd sooner visit Target down the road or any other strip mall.

Stoltzfus Sausage Sandwiches

This place is inside the New Castle Farmers Market. Limited seating is available at the counter but you can also bring your food over to the unoccupied stall behind this vendor where they have set up tables and chairs. There's nothing much to say about them because the main fare is just what their name says: sausage sandwiches. Those are pretty good, however, and definitely worth a try.

Bassett's Original Memphis BBQ

This restaurant is in a strip mall on route 38 westbound but access is available from 38 eastbound via traffic light intersection. Parking seemed more than adequate, although granted I wasn't there at a peak hour.

I'm actually not sure what makes this place original or great. The BBQ wasn't spectacular. It was average at best and somewhat overpriced for what I got. The additional charges for making it a platter and adding a drink made it not worthwhile. However, I do not know of too many alternatives in this part of South Jersey. On the plus side, I thought service was good and although there was a line, they took the orders pretty quickly.

Hardee's

This Hardee's is a welcome addition to this part of Delaware north of the C&D Canal. It's in the same strip mall as Buffalo Wild Wings on US-40 westbound. Access to the strip mall is possible from Scotland Drive for those going eastbound. My initial impression was this Hardee's isn't as good as the one in Middletown because the seating area is small and cramped. Also, we have to give them time to get their food preparation up to par with the rest of the chain. For now, though, Middletown is still preferable.

This is a small store in downtown Claymont with parking behind. I had an Italian hoagie and a bologna and cheese hoagie. Those were pretty good and service was good too. The large size hoagie is probably a good deal since it can make more than one meal. I probably would return if it wasn't a bit out of the way from my usual travels.

This looks like a bright new Walmart. Most of it looks comparable in product selection to other Walmart locations. However, they need to organize the electronics department better. I was looking for a top-up card for my mobile phone and found that these prepaid cards were in three different places and my first choice of top-up denomination wasn't in the first place I checked. Also, they need to open up more registers to handle the evening crowd.

Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar

I revisited Buffalo Wild Wings yesterday evening. Last time, I noted that I wasn't sure if parking was always adequate. This time, I knew it was definitely inadequate. The parking lot was full. Good thing there is an underground garage with a few more parking space accessible from the side of the building. The dining area is even noisier than it was the last time. Also, I noticed that they don't offer celery with the hot wings any more and they've started charging for ranch / blue cheese dressing! The extra charge for dressing was mentioned only in the fine print on the menu and not stated up front, which is an underhanded tactic. So the place has gone downhill.

This Buffalo Wild Wings is in a strip mall on Limestone Road southeast-bound. I'm not sure if parking is always adequate but it was sufficient on the evening when I was there. That evening, BWW was a busy place. The dark and noisy interior around the bar was not really to my liking. However, service was decent. They have some good wing and boneless wing specials in the middle of the week. I had boneless wings. The real attraction of this place is the range of sauces they have, going from mild to very hot. The hottest end of the scale could melt your face off if you're not used to it. Anyway, that's the sauce I had on boneless wings and I finished it with face intact and only one and a half glasses of water. (although I had more water later on during dessert) However, next time, I'd go to another BWW with a brighter and less busy interior.

Wegmans

This Wegmans is in a strip mall off US-202 and Route 29. I used Matthews Road and Foundry Way to get there but other approaches are possible.

It has occurred to me that I never actually use Wegmans as a grocery store. Every time I go to a Wegmans, I just used them as a large self-serve restaurant and ate the food in their well-equipped lounge area. I don't think I've ever seen another grocery store offer quite the same facilities. The downside seems to be the prepared food is pricey, although the sushi wasn't too expensive, comparatively.

This rest area is in the middle of I-95 with access from both eastbound and westbound lanes. One major downside is I'd prefer access from the right lane with underpasses/overpasses instead of from the left lane. I really hate to hold up traffic on or merge into the fast lane of a busy five-lane highway!

The rest area reopened in 2010 after renovation and it is now amazing! I like the open design with a big comfortable area in the center. There are two sets of restrooms and both sets are kept rather clean. The food court area has what appears to be a reasonable selection of food, although I haven't tried any of those yet. There is also a section for tourist info, a must because this state is so small that you'll miss it if you blink. Free wi-fi and power outlets in the lounge area are the icing on the cake.

I think my only real regret is I hardly ever pass by this rest area because most of my business is to the east of it. Otherwise, I'd definitely stop by more often.

In September 2009, they tore down the old Delaware Welcome Center and rebuilt it from scratch. I visited the new welcome center recently and I must say it looks a lot more modern now. Parking is ample. There are two sets of restrooms. There is a tourist information center and there are a few educational exhibits along the walls. However, I continue to be disappointed at steep prices in rest area food courts like this one. Since this isn't a closed-toll highway, you could get off at the next exit and find a much cheaper and/or better place to eat easily.

Great Clips

This Great Clips opened at the beginning of March 2012 in the Concord Square strip mall on Concord Pike northbound. (Southbound access is available via traffic light intersection halfway down the strip mall.)

One nifty thing about Great Clips is you can use their phone app to check in to the store location and get on the waiting list. The same app also shows waiting times at all store locations in the area, so you can pick one. On the evening I went to Great Clips, the wait was zero but I'm sure it is useful sometimes.

This location is brand new and I thought service was excellent. Time will tell whether they keep up this level of service or it erodes as the location becomes busier. For now, I'd certainly return.
