I could not have had a worse expereience with Mr. Appliance. It started with the initial call. The Fremont, Concord, and San Francisco Mr. Appliances all refuse to service Oakland residents. When I finally got in touch with Union City (further than Fremont-go figure) it would take several days for Mr. Appliance to come over. Considering we had gas leaking from range, this was not good news.
Mr. Appliance gave us a range of 9-12 and wouldn't you know it was just about noon when they walked in. That's fine-it's still within the time parameters. The two guys indicated that they would need to order a spark module. I asked how long it would take to arrive. When they said a week, I asked if they could expedite it since it meant that we wouldn't be able to use the stove or oven until then. Mr. Appliance indicated that would reduce the time to two to three days. After a week, I call back. Myra in the office indicates that she personally ordered the part, but can't find our invoice. She promises to call "right back." The following day (that's right-apparently calling the next day qualifies as right back) she gives us an estimate of 1-3. We get a call at 10:30 saying the guys are 10-15 minutes away.
After two hours, they announce that they're going to lunch for half an hour. Returning more than an hour later, they work for an additional hour and tell me that they installed the spark module, but there is a leak in the gas line and we need to call PG&E.
PG&E is very responsive (remind me to write a nice yelp about them) and say that they will send someone right over. The PG&E employee checked the line and said that the range isn't working. As in, back to square one again. Gotta go.. If you don't hear a yelp from me soon, it could be carbon dioxide poisoning. Please check on me. Show owner comment »

I was looking to buy "Zeitoun" by Dave Eggers. The woman behind the counter told me it was out of stock. I asked when it would be in, and she shrugged. I had come in intending to sign up for the notifications of upcoming events, etc, but this staff member clearly had no interest in engaging. I would have been glad to give a phone number or email so that they could notify me when it arrived, but again, there was no involvement-and no one else to distract her. Odd.

Cami has provided excellent service both times (we did a 6:15 reservation one week, and the later seating, at 8pm, the second time. It was consistently well paced on both occasions). There is something very special about having the chef come out to say hello, and it contributes to the general warmth of the experience at this once a week restaurant.
The butterscotch pudding this week really ended the evening on a high note. This round we brought a vegetarian friend, and there was nothing that she couldn't eat. We really appreciate Melissa's philosophy around local organic producers. We've walked out happily full without being uncomfortable on both occasions. A memorable meal guaranteed, and $45 for four courses is tough to beat. There was a large group celebrating a birthday on our last visit, so keep it on your list of options for a group visit.

Kitchen on Fire offers the best cooking classes you haven't heard of. The boyfriend signed us up for "The Art of the French Fry" for my birthday. I learned to pick the right kind of potatoes for fries, the difference that blanching makes, the correct temperature for fries, when to season them, and how to make a variety of aolis. The sparkling new facilities were a treat to work in, and Mike C and Olivier had laid out a nice little spread of cheese, crackers and strawberries so that we wouldn't starve to death. They've even arranged for a 10% discount off a bottle of wine from downstairs.
The classes are what can only be described as shockingly cheap-it was $30 for a 3 hour class, allowing us to eat so many fries that we felt sick (I expected this, and would have been unhappy otherwise) We brainstormed on the way home for possible other events there and are considering holding a dinner for the boy toy's big day in the winter. Mike C and Olivier would have happily stayed answering our many questions all night-and it was a Saturday. These two have no shortage of personality. I really liked this and want to see it succeed, but frankly, I have some concerns about the success (or potential failure) of Epicurious Garden. The place was extremely dead at 8:30 on a Saturday night.
Check out their web page for their jam packed schedule of classes, including couples nights, supper clubs, basic cooking classes, and singles nights.

Three weeks later, I can't be so generous. Again, the shelves were bare. Another shopper noted that there was no broccoli or carrots in the produce section. We're not looking for the exotic here-even the basics were nowhere in sight. It was near impossible to find service when items were missing, very different from the usual, super helpful and available service I've come to enjoy at other locations. Perhaps most disappointing was that the squash that I bought has a use by date of tomorrow. Yes, I should have paid more attention before I bought it. But, with a store this new, and shelves so bare, how did I end up buying near-expired merchandise?
Throw in the parking, and I'll be sticking with the 9th St. location, thanks.

9 years and counting...I'm trying to think of another business in the city that I have stuck with as I moved from neighborhood to neighborhood, and I am stumped. Probably because it doesn't exist.
I was extremely disappointed when the dress came back in blue plastic and the stuffing in the bodice was gone. The dress was caving it on itself, and the ubiquitous photographer shot of the hanging wedding gown was no longer an option. There must be a better option in the area.
Date

About 6 weeks ago, I showed my OB a lump in my breast. She provided a referral to several doctors, one of whom was Dr. Grissom. When I called the office for an appointment, the receptionist indicated that the earliest I could come in was 6 weeks from that date. She also offered that I could leave a voice mail for Dr. Grissom, which I did, mentioning that I was in my second trimester of pregnancy and very concerned.
Dr. Grissom sent me an email that night from her Blackberry offering an early morning appt. 5 days later. She determined that the lump was a cyst and aspirated it in her office during the appointment. She immediately put me at ease. I can't tell you how much it meant to me for her to make these special accomodations. Thank you, Dr. Grissom.
