Easy Tiger

Category: German
Neighborhood: Downtown

4.0 star rating

[Insert cheesy but clever line/pun referencing "easy tiger"]

[Insert glowing review of the beer cheese, which you eat with the pretzel]

[Insert mention of ping pong, the back patio, and decent beer selection]

[Insert useful facts about them serving coffee, having wifi, and being open all day]

[Insert highlight about the pastrami sandwich]

That about sums it up. Great little place. I go frequently.

I spent the majority of a Friday here working on my computer pretty comfortably. The space is significant with plenty of seating, so you shouldn't have any issue finding a seat. There are some power outlets, but they're at a bit more of a premium than chairs.

The coffee here is pretty good. The espresso is better than just drinkable, but it falls short of being something I would order again. The french press is good, but a bit inconsistent and can lack body.

Service is friendly, though I hesitate to make more specific critiques as I've spent all of my time in Birmingham driving and at this single shop, so I'm not sure what's normal here.

The breakfast biscuit with sausage I had was quite good and not too large; the sausage wasn't your typical flat-patty breakfast sausage and tasted fairly healthy. The grilled cheese I had for lunch was mediocre and quite small, and the pasta salad side was disappointing and too heavy on the onion for my taste.

The wifi workswell (unless you need access to a non-HTTP/SMTP port) --you'll need a username and password from them at the counter that will give you 24 hours of usage for free. Grab that and it should be smooth-sailing.

Parking is a downer here --it's street only, and the meters have 2 hour limits (when you eventually find one that isn't broken), so you'll be doing a bit of moving if you want to stick around longer (I did).

Overall a pretty cool place that I would recommend for anybody looking for a place to hang out for a while and work.

I walked 40+ blocks in bitter cold for this. I walked 40+ blocks in bitter cold, for this?

I walked 40+ blocks in bitter cold for an average breakfast and mediocre coffee? For an excessively pedestrian café without the good sense to allow themselves even a light rinse of personality? For songs-you've-heard-thousands-of-times-ninety-seven -point-shoot-me-in-the-head-radio with commercial breaks about commercial-free nursing home tunes?

I walked 40+ blocks in bitter cold for the full pedestrian experience, it seems.

This is a friendly local coffee shop with decent coffee and really great food. While the espresso is palatable, it lacks body and the flavor of the beans doesn't really come through. Standard black coffee is, again, palatable, and if you're not a coffee snob this a great place to grab a cup of coffee on your way to work. I particularly like the variety of sweetening options they have, though I tend to take my coffee black. I actually ate one of the little raw sugar cube things they had and it was delicious, hahaha.

The crêpe I had here was fantastic. It was called the Complète and had bacon, egg, emmentaler, and swiss in it. I also sampled the Legumes Vegetarien and it was delicious as well. The muffins I've seen at other shops around town, but they're great as well.

Free wi-fi is available and there is a lounge in back if you want to just hang out and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Dear Heather (my sister),

I realize that the first (and last) time you had Indian food was at Bombay  Bistro. I too recognize that your palate is optimized for hot wings, potato salad, and cheap beer. Still, I humbly request you *try* this food that you label as being "disgusting" and "scary looking", perhaps even just to humor me.

See, New India serves better food than Bombay. For starters, it is always fresh and hot. The naan lacks the dubiousness present in the Bombay-naan you had before, and this basket we got has four different kinds of naan that are all delicious; how can you turn down sweet dessert naan with raisins in it, after all? And this delightfully creamy and aromatic Paneer Durbari/Korma with almonds and raisins --it is truly bar none in Austin. Here, try putting some rice on a piece of plain naan and then drizzling copious amounts of the Chicken Tikka or Saag on it and let your eyes roll back in your head as you bite down. Sooooo goood.

What do you mean you aren't hungry? We're here for dinner, and there is plenty to go around. Does this Goat Malvani not interest you in the slightest? No?

Well do you know what? Fine. You clearly don't know good food when you taste it, or even just see it since you won't try to taste it. This is really a good thing --now I have days and days worth of leftover Indian bliss in my refrigerator, just awaiting the opportunity to be microwaved for 30 seconds, stirred, and microwaved another 30 seconds before hitting my belly.

Ahh, Breakfast.

Bacon is not. This place *should* be a fun niche restaurant focused on doing novel things with bacon. Instead it is 24-diner with a more limited menu and less posh digs. Oh, and normal hours.

I ordered a burger, and had to pay $2 to add the bacon to it. And I ordered these fried corn fritter things (that weren't good), plus a fountain drink. With tip I paid ~$23 for lunch.

The food was okay, but nothing special. The burger was pretty good, owing most of its flavor to the bacon I added, the fries were decent, and the corn fritter balls were laughable.

Unless something changes pronto I don't see the gorgeously designed menu and logo keeping this place afloat for more than 8 months. Show owner comment »

Go. Just go. Have you already had lunch today? Go for dinner. Is it midnight? Go for breakfast at 10:59am tomorrow morning. Just GO.

Hands down the best caprese sandwich in Austin. Wanna bet me? Go have one, and then we'll throw down afterward if you don't agree (no need to let me know in advance, I'll be there already).

The Lamb Burger is exquisite. Loaded with flavor, just right on the spices and juiciness. The pulled pork is damn good as well, probably because that Sriracha BBQ sauce is so loaded with flavor.

The Velvet Elvis firmly establishes this cheap South Austin sandwich trailer as being equally as good at combining different flavors as your average 95 ZAGAT rated restaurant. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Municipal Taste eventually be bestowed with a 95+ rating themselves. So what is this mythical Velvet Elvis? Sliced bananas served on grilled sourdough with bacon, peanut butter, and habanero jelly. Take it from my tongue who has first-hand(bud?) experience with this thing: it's fuckin delicious.

Now that you wasted 60 seconds reading, get your shoes on and get heading towards 1817 S. Lamar Blvd for a badass sandwich by some awesome Austinites.

PS: You can snag free wifi while you wait/eat from Austin's Pizza in the same parking lot.

I've got to agree with Eve R. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) about how awesome the owner of this place is. He's super friendly and conversational, but in a really down-to-earth way.

I'm a big fan of the pizza, and how damn easy it is to get food here. Not only do they post their hours and keep them updated online, but THEY ACTUALLY ADHERE TO THEM. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is for a restaurant, but trailers too often don't post/update/adhere to their hours so you're rolling the dice on whether or not you're going out of your way for nada.

I wasn't a fan of the cinnamon sticks they started offering with the Facebook deal; rather typical, which isn't at all characteristic of their pizza and service.

1 Bonus Star: When ordering a slice, it NEVER comes out tasting like it's been sitting around for any time at all. I don't know how they do it, but they're always perfect.

Youniversal Transmission & Automotive Center

I want to like Youniversal more than I really do, so I hype them to myself.

I needed a tire patched and an oil change. I absolutely despise the dealership for my car, so I avoid them at all costs. I found Youniversal on Yelp and gave them a call. They were friendly and assured me they could get the job done. They did just that, and let me know my air filter (that is a special model) should be replaced; they put an order in with the dealer and had me come back the next day to have it replaced. They were accommodating and easy to work with, which is probably what a lot of their good reviews are attributed to.

My only gripe with Youniversal is that they still have the auto-care sales pitch.

"Change your oil every 3,000 miles or else!"

"Look at these 'dirty' engines that didn't have proper 70k mile maintenance!"

"We can sell you cheaper used tires than anywhere else in the world!"

No, thank you. I'll continue changing my oil based on the manufacturer recommended 8,000 miles (synthetic), performing engine maintenance as needed (preventative, yes, but not paranoid) and buying new tires that I can rely on.

So yeah, if you're going to hit up Youniversal, just beware the salesman pitches and don't get suckered. Show owner comment »

Gotta say I don't understand the bad reviews for G's. Specifically, I don't understand why anybody would complain that they don't give you a paltry amount of meat.

They're local, and have a very South Austin vibe. They do what they do well, including making most (all?) of their own dressings/sauces/etc. You get to pick your side with a sandwich --I always go for the carrots & ranch, but I rarely get to them until later in the day because the sandwiches are huge. I haven't tried a lot of their sandwiches yet, and I haven't done anything toasted because it's so damn hot out.

It isn't Fricano's, but it isn't Thundercloud or Subway (*shudders*) either. Give this fairly new, local deli sandwich shop a try the next time you're in the area and mood (for food, come on now) and I think you'll find it a good experience. And if you have feedback for them, like "I like MOAR VEGGIES!" then be sure to tell them; I think you'll find them to be quite accommodating.
