Edinburgh Castle Pub

Adventuring in the city led us in a mostly sober stupor to Edinburgh.  Met up with a friend and headed inside.  We got lucky as it wasn't busy at all!  We were able to order drinks and find a booth.  Pretty reasonably priced too (compared to bars/pubs in SJ)  - 3 beers and a rum and coke for $16.

Walking inside it's nothing like what you think you're walking into - it's a pub most assuredly but to have a name like Edinburgh - you would have thought that there would be something Scottish about this place but no.  It's a pub and serves alcohol - as long as there is seating and music what does the decor ultimately matter?  The hand drawn sign above the bar that night read "Korova Milk Bar" which kept making me giggle and many references were made that night to a certain movie.  There are some booths to the right when you come in the front door, more tables and chairs scattered here and there and plenty of stools at the bar.  There is a small stage for karaoke and bigger stage up top (so I'm told) for when they have live music.  I can't imagine how packed this place must get when it's busy.

Since I'm a good bar patron and knowing it was a slow night - when we were done I took our empty glasses to the bar and got a wink and smile out of the bearded bartender who looked like he wasn't having a good night.

The drinks are strong and cheap - bring a couple friends and make it a party :)

I look forward to going back!

We decided to try this place based on the reviews.  I have to say I was pretty disappointed.

We were sat in the very far corner of the restaurant and forgotten.  15 minutes later a buser comes by and asks if we need anything - he brought us coffee - 20 minutes later we flag our server down and finally are able to order.  I ordered a Denver omelet and my fiancée ordered the spinach and goat cheese omelet.  Typically when you order a Denver omelet it should come with onions, green bell peppers, and ham - what I got was green onions, green chili peppers (the canned kind) and lunch meat cut up.  Awesome!  My fiancée's omelet was warm (not hot), the spinich was raw and uncooked and the cheese on top was literally pulled out of the fridge and plopped on top (it was fridge cold to the touch).  What happened to the hot plate quality check??  We let the waiter know that my omelet was wrong and that the other one wasn't even warm.  He said he would go get the manager and then we never saw him again.

We never got our check and went to the front to pay.

Maybe at some point in the future we'll give this place another try.  When we do - I will update my review with hopefully better news.

Emily's Good Things To Eat

I've struggled with this review - not for lack of what I have to say but more for the fact that every time I go back I am disappointed.  Emily's started out strong when I first started visiting it over a year ago - however slowly over the last several months it seems that things are sliding a little bit.

Their egg salad sandwich used to be my favorite, especially if it's on sliced sourdough.  Their pastries are good - not overly sweet.  The cinnamon twist and the cinnamon walnut pastry are consistently good.  I haven't had the coffee though.

However the service and attitude of some of the counter staff leaves little to be desired.  I get that you get overwhelmed and busy but having only one person up front running the counter - taking orders, making coffee, etc. isn't the wisest idea when there is a line out the door.  I've stood at the counter for nearly 15 minutes before even being helped while a frantic young lady ran around behind it trying to figure out who to help and what she should do.

I have yet to find a bathroom here which is worrysome.

Working in SC has spoiled me for good eats like Zachary's.

I've not been here when there has not been a wait.  It's best to go early and get your name in.  I do have to admit its a bit weird to have to walk to the back of the restaurant to put your name on the list to get seated.  Their waiting area is in the same spot too.

I'm a basic breakfast type of gal - eggs, bacon, potatoes, etc.  I *love* their potatoes here!  I haven't had anything else.  Their service is timely but can be slow just due to being busy.

Another stop on my tourist adventure in NYC!

This place has to be seen with your own eyes in person, not staring at a television.  There is so much creative editing cuts out.

Obscura is just as jam packed and overflowing as you'd imagine with all sorts of cool, kooky, and creepy stuff.  I LOVE IT!  Just about anything you can imagine that would be in a store like this is already there.

After doing much browsing - we settled on looking at old photographs.  Low and behold we found probably the most striking death photograph I've seen yet.  The deceased isn't the subject of fascination for us - it was honestly the look on the family's face surrounding their beloved's casket.  Truly heart wrenching.  We also fell in love with a prosthetic hand that was in excellent condition - however the $$ tag on it was way way out of our budget.

Prices here ARE negotiable!  If you see something you want, ask on the price .. they are willing to work with you!

Terminal 3

This has got to be one of the saddest airport terminals - well next to SJC's Terminal C before it was demolished.

There are places to poke around while waiting for your flight and thankfully most of the staff in said stores are pretty nice considering the depressing terminal they work in.  I was surprised unlike most airports - their "free" wi-fi isn't really free.

There were motorized walkways and escalators that were out of service.  Not to mention the bathroom issues where it seems that in most cases like the photo someone already uploaded - that the toilet paper holders in the bathrooms are broken and the giant rolls have to be suspended with tied up trash bags.  Sometimes I regret the fact that I actually looked up at the ceiling, only for my eyes to meet the large water stains from a leaky roof and missing ceiling tiles (this was throughout the terminal too).

This poor place needs a serious do-over.  I saw something about Delta getting a brand new terminal.  That is a good thing because Terminal 3 should be put out of it's misery.

All b*tching aside - it's just old and run down.

Crif Dogs

Having seen Crif Dogs on "The Layover" I had to be the tourist and stop in for a dog and a beer when I was in town.

We happened to walk in during the middle of a rainy day and I think the staff behind the counter outnumbered the patrons inside.  We came at the PERFECT time!

After staring blankly at the menu and trying to decide what to feed the beast within, I settled on the BLT dog and my fiancee had The Chihuahua dog.  No not that actual dog, the hot dog I mean :)  We got 2 cans of Pabst to go along with the dogs and waited patiently.

The seating inside is a little smaller than what it looked like on TV.   Inside the front door are a couple of play at your own risk video games.  Along the same wall is a row of tables, mainly 2 seaters but they can be pushed together for a couple more people.  There is a bar along the left side where you can sit as well.

The dogs arrived and we were totally silent through the meal except for knowing glances across the table at the joy that was happening in our mouths.  I don't normally eat hot dogs nor could I call myself a fan .. but holy of all holys .. I LOVE CRIF DOG.

I look forward to my next NYC visit :)

I cannot count the times I've eaten here over the years.

Unlike the other eateries of the same name - this is only one of the two whose food and service is consistent.

The portions are large and their Swedish pancakes are the best :). Like most breakfast places that are good - there is a wait on the weekends but it's worth it.  I've never had a bad breakfast here.

There is plenty of seating and they can accommodate a large party with advance notice.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Stumptown Coffee is one of my favorite things about PDX.  You know it has to be good when it's served in a random cafe on the other side of the country.  (I know this because I just ordered a cup of it while sitting in the JFK Airport)

Even though it was dreary and pouring rain - the shop was nice and warm with seating just about everywhere.  The staff was super nice and helpful in picking out beans to bring home.

My last visit it was hard to get a spot to sit but we managed to snag a window seat.  The only bad thing (which does not take away from the rating) was the leaky front window that kept dripping on our laptop - thankfully we saw it in time before it did any damage.  I'm sure it's been fixed since :)

Stumptown is the only coffee shop I visit in PDX!

Apple Store

I love this Apple store. They by far have the nicest Apple employees I've had to deal with.

Sometimes as a woman when I walk into a tech orientated store I get treated like I don't know anything...which really pisses me off. This Apple store does not do that which is nice. I can ask my question even if it is worded funky or non technical and they always are able to figure out my problem without giving me an attitude about it.

Starting back when I had my original 1st gen iPhone and had to get it replaced all the way to the current of me having to replace the hard-drive in my 2 year old laptop .. they have been awesome.

Anytime I've had to leave a device there -- I get it back within 24-48 hours (depending on what has happened) and the device comes back cleaned which was REALLY nice. I had not seen my MacBook screen that clean since I pulled it out of the box.
