Bordello

Categories: Dance Clubs, Bars
Neighborhood: Downtown

3 star rating
 11/15/2009
I wasn't sure whether to go with a 2 or a 3 rating here, for reasons you will see, but I am nice, so I am going with a 3. Went on a date night here hoping for lots of mood lighting, nice sexy ambiance, and we did get the red mood lighting, love the atmosphere of the place...all chandeliers and huge gilt mirrors and brocade couches...the only HUGE bummer being that ALL couches and seating areas are reserved. When a guy working there came over to tell us that it was reserved where we were sitting (yeah, we were being rebels) I asked him if there was any place there that wasn't reserved (with a slight attitude, yes) he said No. LAME! Minus tons of points there. Not cool, Bordello.

We both ordered gimlets (going for the retro flavor), and the bartender wasn't over friendly, but serviceable. It was good. The 2nd bartender made crappy drinks. We re-ordered the drinks because they were so bad, and he sucked at making them the 2nd time. Get better bartenders, Bordello.

Since there is no where to sit and chat, we decide to go up onto the small balcony along the edge of the room. The band comes on, and is actually really good. We enjoy the music and make our own dance floor on the balcony. (Thanks, Vodka!) All in all, good times were had, but I don't know that we would go here again. It's too bad, because the place has such potential...

Wurstküche

When Ben told me that we were going to a bratwurst place called Wurstkuche (say it out loud and giggle) I figured it would be some run of the mill hot dog stand or something. It's so not! It's amazing and I couldn't stop moaning in pleasure when eating. I had an apricot and ginger bratwurst, with sweet peppers and caramelized onions on top, with this tangy, gritty mustard topping it off. Explosions of flavor. He had the mango and jalapeno brat and it was amazing as well. The fries are delish as well, and you can order as many dipping sauces as you want. We got curry ketchup (our fave, mmm!) chipotle ketchup and bleu cheese with bacon. Top it off with some fresh belgian beer, and I was in foodie heaven.

I was also very excited because I walked past Ron Rifkin, who played Sydney's nemesis on Alias, and is now on Brothers and Sisters. I had a slight starstruck moment, like I constantly forget we are in LA. :)

The seating is hofbrau haus style, a la a beer garten in Germany. (Little smaller than one in Germany, but hey, there is a DJ spinning records, so it's all good.) It's a big communal dining room, and you are going to have to sit with people you don't know, but it's ok, because everyone is gorgeous and having just as much fun as you are. I plan on taking all my friends here. It's right near a great karaoke place in Little Tokyo, so we can make it a night. Delicious!

Borders Books Music & Cafe

Category: Bookstores

4 star rating

I used to have a love affair with this Borders. I was there all the time, wandering the aisles, sitting down in the comfy chairs with a big huge expensive art book that I didn't want to buy, but wanted to peruse. I would wander the waaay too expensive music selection and listen to the samples they had available. I would grab all my favorite magazines and get a mocha and read, read, read. (I would buy stuff a lot too, don't think I am just a moocher!)

Then I started buying books cheaper online and downloading music from the internet, subscribing to my fave magazines...

It makes me sad that I no longer seem to feel the pull to this Borders, but it's a great bookstore nonetheless. I prefer smaller bookstores now, independently owned bookstores now, but I still go here occasionally. It's conveniently located near Montclair Plaza, and is right off the freeway.

It's a good place to go on a first date, an internet date, hehee...meet in the cafe, you will have books to talk about, and then if it goes well you can meander through the bookshelves. If not, you can bail and go to the mall.

I'll always love ya Borderz! ;)

Arclight Hollywood

5 star rating

I love the Arclight. It's where my kind of people go to watch movies. The kinds of people who don't talk, don't bring children to an adult movie, and people who respect everyone's movie going experience.

I love that I get to pick my own seat, and my, the seats are comfy! It's a little more expensive than a regular movie theater, but SO worth it. The inside of the theater is black walls, no distractions. The sound and picture quality are top notch, I think it's the best that's out there right now.

I saw Star Trek here this summer, and had the whole happy, communal movie watching experience., everyone laughing, gasping at the same moments..it was awesome to watch with people who love entertainment! No texting happens here! Yay!

I have also been to the cafe and it's yummy, so it's a good choice to go before the movie, on a date perhaps.

I live about an hour away from it, and any big event movies, this is the place to go, fo sho!

Dragonfly Bar

 Update - 10/22/2009
I still love you, Miss Kitty's! Even after 2  1/2 years of going monthly, I am still enamored of your charms. Your kinky charms.

Once a month, usually the 3rd friday of the month, Kitty's takes over the Dragonfly for a night of devilry and debauchery, and it's never boring. I have met so many interesting people here, I can't count them all on one hand. I have met men, women, and everything in between. It's fun to put on a tutu, corset and naughty fishnets and go sexy for the night.

My only qualm is that the pictures that are taken by the professional photogs aren't posted on their site on a regular basis, but I think they are getting better at it, so I am staying tuned for that. (Actually, they post them on their facebook page, so if you want to add them, look up "Boulet Brothers", they are the sexy guys who dream up the themes, etc.)

Seriously, if you want a night a scandalous, sexy fun, make plans to go here. I am dating someone I met here, and just the thought of going into darkly lit corners with him makes me wish they were having an event tomorrow. ;}

(This is a rating for Friday nites, when the Dragonfly is taken over by Miss Kitty's Parlour.) Miss Kitty's changed my life. I love love love this place. Yeah, it is in Hollywood, but you won't encounter many trendy types here. This is a place for the rest of us, to have a grand old time, and let loose with no judgements. Random words to be associated with kitty's: Pasties, public spankings, lingerie, porno room, assless chaps, goth, emo, free shots, free before 10pm, lots of garter belts and thigh highs peeking out under skirts, burlesque shows, fun. I used to be all repressed and prudish, and this place turned me around. I can now go to any club and have fun, it literally changed me to where I don't care what people think, I just want to have a good time. The very first time I went to this place I walked in the door and a chick in a vegas-showgirl looking outfit gave my friends and I free shots out of the bottle. They play what they term "electro mash-ups", but it all has a good beat and the mix some good 80's in there. There is a main dance floor with a stage where burlesque shows are put on, and there is a smokers patio. My one and only qualm with this place is that every time I go there is a random old guy watching everyone. Like, old and skeezy looking. Not that being old makes one skeezy, but it's all in the leering looks and tounge hanging out. Ech. But overall I love the crowd, very accepting of all shapes and sizes of people. There are fun, non snobby go-go dancers (boys and girls). The best time to get there is between 10:30-11:30, that's when things really heat up. If you are easily offended or prudish, this place is not for you. You will be hanging out with transexuals, homosexuals, bi's, and everything in between. But don't worry, guys, if you are straight it isn't the kind of place where you will be hit on by guys. The guys at kitty's can sense it. Also, there are "theme" nights, such as "hong kong kink" or "slumber party massacre", but you have to be on the mailing list from her website or myspace to get the details on what themes are coming up. So go, have fun, meet random and awesome people and let loose, miss kitty style.

The Music Box

What a night, man. Seriously. I love this place! It is lovely inside, all deep reds and dark colors...I saw the Kills here in July 2009, and it was amazing.

So my friend Steve and I get there, park...but we are early, so we head across the street to a fun looking bar with a cool vintagey neon sign called the Frolic room, have some yummy and cheap drinks and people watch. So first off, I like that this venue is close to bars and entertainment! So then we go back to the Music box, getting ready to go in...

The only bummer was that when I went through security, they made me throw out the gum that I had in my purse, quel horreur! I understand why they do this, but it was a full pack, lol...

Anyhow, onto more exciting things: Steve and I were near the stage, and who do we see surrounded in a pack of her gays, Drew Fricken' Barrymore! Like, 1 person away from us. (May I just say that anyone who knows me knows that I Love love love her, and she is the one celeb that I have always said I wanted to meet. ) And Steve and I are not from LA, so we get a little star struck. She looked so cute in her white parachute pants and big black glasses, blonde messy ponytail. So this tall guy comes up, looks like he is in a band, but I can't place it. You can tell they are meeting for the first time, they shake hands, etc. So they are talking in their group, he walks away, calls her over and starts making out with her, lol! You should have seen her group of friends, they were hilarious! After the makeout session, she comes back over and I could tell she was like OMG! A total girl moment, and it made me love her even more, because we have all had that moment where we just kissed someone, and went into chick mode with our friends. I thought it was cool that her posse protected and surrounded her, keeping her in a little bubble.

So you may ask, why didn't I go up to her? I believe stars deserve fun with friends without weirdos coming up and saying "I loved you in 50 first dates!' So I didn't go up to her, I let her enjoy her night.

So back to the venue! The Kills came on and rocked it, put on an amazing show! We danced behind Drew, all sang along and had the communal concert experience. I would totally go here again,  in a heartbeat. I just wouldn't bring a full pack of gum. :D

Fox Theater Pomona

Category: Music Venues

4 star rating

I have been to 2 concerts here, Band of Horses and the Yeah yeah yeahs...and I love that this cool, intimate little concert venue is so close to me, easy to get to, and has easy access parking and restaurants. Downtown Pomona is quite adorable and I like going early to walk around and look in the shops. (it's a nice change from going to LA, paying huge amounts for parking, getting lost, etc.)

But I digress! I love that the Fox has 2 seperate lounge areas upstairs, with lots of couches...and you can buy a drink with your debit card, always a plus. Plus, for you tee-totalers, they make a mean Shirley Temple. The concert that is going on inside is shown on the walls in the lounge area, just in case you need some air, you can still watch and listen.

I have been right near the stage and it sounded amazing, and have also been in the balcony which sounded awesome, so no complaints for me there. The only thing which sucked, but at the same time I understand it, is that when a friend went to get a drink and left the floor in front of the stage, security wouldn't let him back in because it was full to capacity. So again, I totally understand fire laws and all that stuff, and it's awesome that they are being careful, just know this when you leave the floor that you won't be allowed back in.

The bathroom situation is a little precarious, because there is only one large women's restroom, and always long lines. So if you gotta go, get in line. But it was clean and well managed.

Anyhow, I will totally go here again, and am always checking their site for upcoming artists. I really hope this place is successful!

And may I just say, it was incredibly cool to hear Karen O say "What up, Pomona?!" Geez, she is amazing.

Tacos Baja

I have been on the search for the best fish taco in Southern California, and  have tried quite a few. This place makes them almost perfectly! More so than any other place I have tried so far.

Apparently the place got a B rating, which scared some family members away, but I will still go there, I could care less. We all need a few germs, right?

Anyhow, go. try the #3, which is a fish taco and shrimp taco combo, and you will be happy. Promise.

(if you don't like spicy, ask for the sauce on the side.)

So happy we have an semi-indie theater in Claremont! I enjoy going here more than any other theater around here because it's clean, it's a small chain so I don't feel like I am at some huge corporate behemoth kind of place, and...oh yes: They sell Pocky! (usually only found in asian stores, it's a yummy cookie stick dipped in chocolate goodness.)

The movies are diverse, and the seats are comfy. My only complaint is that I always seem to sit by some old lady smelling of strong perfume, but that's not the theaters fault. :)

All in all, great location, service, etc. Plan on seeing something there tomorrow, in fact!

Club Monte Cristo

Category: Nightlife

2 star rating

Went to this club when it was Club Ruin, and first off, it was really hard to find, even with my iPhone GPS. But we made it.
I liked that the parking was cheap, only 5 bucks!

Every other friday the club becomes Club Ruin, a gothy darkwave kind of place. There were many girls and boys in velvet, dancing dreamily to the music.

I liked that there was a lot of places to sit, red velvet and brocade couches, and met some cool people to hang with.

But overall, I was kinda "meh" about it. The venue is nothing special, has no interesting characteristics...The DJ played a good mix of fairly slow tempo stuff...portishead, etc, which I liked, but  my friend didn't. (She was a little drunky and wanted 80's music...)

Oh, and we were outside taking pics with my camera and some bouncer came and told us we couldn't take pics...whatever! So that sucked. But I still took pics, mwhahha!

Anyhow, I am glad we tried it out, and I think uber goths will love it. If you are looking for high energy, up tempo...this is not the place. I felt like I was smiling too much. :)
