ENSO Winery

I've taking my vitamins and saying my prayers every night just like the Hulkster asked of me and, afterwards, I fall into a deep, deep sleep. Each and every night, I dream of a place within walking distance that has a casual vibe, delicious wine that's priced akin to having a pint of beer.

Well, folks, my dreams have been answered! Enso has a great vibe, killer tunes, delicious wine and prices that can compete with any bars price for a pint of ale. Bottles range from $17 - 25 (to-go or to stay) if I remember accurately and there's plenty of room to hang out.

BYOF is highly encouraged as food is not their focus.

Chiang Mai

Wow! A Thai restaurant that finally gets it right. Not only is the food delicious, authentic and filled with fresh ingredients. Not only are the prices affordable.

The atmosphere and service are simply wonderful!!! I know there's often a cultural / language barrier but often times, the best of Thai restaurants miss the mark on atmosphere. Chiang Mai certainly doesn't. It's a place where you can hunker down at the bar, enjoy a local IPA and pick the brain of the staff about trying new dishes. All wonderfully explained in the menu! Highly recommended for folks who want Thai take out, like to eat at a bar but are tired of bar food or date night.

Side note, have you ever experienced fresh peppercorns? Not fresh ground pepper, mind you, actual fresh pepper corns still on the stem and having the consistency of capers... I'm in love! Thanks Chiang Mai for broadening my eating experience!

I'm not sure if I went to the same bar as the all the folks that are giving this four stars. Then again, maybe we're just cut from different cloth.

This was the worst "alehouse" I've been to in a long, long time. We walked in to a brightly lit, overly "designed" bar and were met with a grimace from the bartender. Maybe it was the bright lights causing him to wince... Sat down at the end of the bar and watched the grimacing wincer put away glass ware for about five minutes when finally, "ahh, here she comes, this must be the bartender..." A smiling gal approached us, we said hello, she said hello and then proceeded to walk past us onto her tables. What gives?

A few more minutes go by, the bartender is in the kitchen shooting the shit with the cook, we can see him. He comes out and, finally, offers to get us a drink. We ask the differences between the german beers on tap; "I dunno, you should just try them." Thanks buddy... we order our $6 imports and they're fair. I would have ordered differently with more info. though.

We have to ask for a food menu after waiting a few more minutes. Hey, it looks good, a bit spendy, but good! I ask if the chicken pot pie is filling, "it is." My wife asks for a advice on what the bartender prefers between a couple different entrees. His response, "They're all really different, you should just pick the one you want." Again, thanks buddy. She picked the smoked chicken thigh entree. We also order a pretzel as an appetizer.

Five minutes go by, we, again, can see into the kitchen where the bartender is hanging out. We can see the pretzel is finished and awaiting delivery, does it come? No. Does it come fifteen minutes later with the entrees, yes. Is it cold? Yes.

Entrees: blech! My "chicken" pot pie has three pieces of chicken in a soup of gravy and mostly undercooked celery topped with a piece of puff pastry dough. It was terrible. The smoked chicken thigh was the most bland tasting entree we've had in a while and the thigh ($16) was from an anorexic chicken, looking as if it weighed a scant 2 ounces.  To correct the blandness we went to salt and pepper the food, oh wait, we have to ask non-existent bartender for that too. Great!

We finished our meal quickly and paid as soon as possible, chugged our beers and left. Why such a hurry? Oh, maybe I left this out....

WE ATE OUR ENTIRE, EXPENSIVE MEAL BEING SERENADED BY THE SWEET SOUNDS OF MARILYN MANSON, ALICE IN CHAINS, AND TONS MORE 90'S HARD ROCK!!

If you're still shooting film, this is a gem of a store. Seriously, never been to a more helpful, friendly and flat-out amazing store for cameras in my life. Part-museum, the store is the go-to place for hard to find cameras, parts and info.

Update - 11/20/2010
Tried it again over a year later and I really want to love this place... Dear Laurelhurst Market, you are a temple of carnivorous eaters! Why on earth are you pre-cutting my rare steak for me? WHY!?!? There's laws against this in other states.

Everything was satisfactory, but nothing surprised me.  The pate plate tasted just like pate should. The mac & cheese was just that (albeit for $6).  The mixed greens salad was a handful of the bulk pack Earthbound Farms greens with a little dressing and the brisket (at $19) was a slab of slow cooked meat drenched in bbq sauce.

The reason I went with the brisket was the steaks all seemingly came pre-sliced, which to me seemed silly in a temple of meat.  Now the brisket, on the other hand, came untouched.  So untouched, in fact, that once you dug under the sauce, you came to realize that a whole third of the slab was a pure, gelatinous glob of fat.

I guess we were just supremely disappointed because our hopes were set quite high. This restaurant comes to us from the masterminds that brought us Simpatica which is an ivory tower of service, atmosphere and supreme food quality in the Portland restaurant scene.

Laurelhurst Market has a nicer ambience than Simpatica but, in nearly every other category, lags significantly behind. We'll try again in a year or so but no rush to go back now.

The brunch game just got hotter!! Roost dropped a plate of perfectly poached eggs, a house made garlic tomato sauce, sauteed spinach and three slices of the best toast I've had in a long while in front of me this morning. It was heaven for $10 and their Stumptown coffee was better tasting than in the actual Stumptown shops, seriously. If it wasn't so delicious, I'd take a star off for having unaffordable mimosas... I'm sure they're good but I can't justify four ounces of bubbly and four ounces of juice for $9.

So, Yelpers, go here and enjoy! Just don't all go on the day I'm going because I HATE waiting in line for brunch.

Don't know what I can add to the already amazing reviews but I'll say this... if you consider yourself open-minded, enjoy being tossed with an eccentric mix of folks, and love a good, cheap drink, you've found your go-to spot in Detroit. I visit every time I'm back home to Michigan!

I want to love this restaurant as it really is striving to be amazing. Unfortunately, after two visits, everything I've tried has failed to impress. It's been too greasy both times, the menu and ordering from the menu are overly complicated, though service has been extremely friendly (when you can get their attention) they seem rushed and lacking of enough staff. Overall, I just don't see myself stopping here again.

Wow, not only were these guys half the price of the next cheapest quote for a muffler but they had me in and out in under a half hour. Up front honest pricing, they let me see the repair being made and they were friendly and polite.

Best automotive repair experience I've ever had! I will be back for every muffler and brake repair in the future.
