They are NOT CLOSED. They just moved down Sherman Way a bit into Canoga Park.

By far the best bird store in Southern California, Discount Birds offers not only hard-to-find supplies (regular pet stores never carry the freshly milled seed in the big bags) but has the highest ethics when it comes to raising and socializing baby birds.
First - look in those cages - you will see multiple bowls with fresh foods (and all of it really fresh, not sitting forever), fresh water and treats. I've said it before on my own parrot website, and I'll say it again: they put other bird owners to shame with the diet they serve, and they are serving it to dozens of birds. Believe me, this is not an easy task!
They are very compassionate and caring about their feathered creatures, and follow the most responsible guidelines for hand-feeding and completely weaning babies before they go to their new home.
I can't emphasize enough how important this is. I once bought a bird from a different shop, and that baby was NOT weaned. If I hadn't been an experience hand feeder (I'd hand-fed and weaned dozens of babies in the past), that could have been tragic. For this reason, I believe people should ONLY buy a bird from a place like Discount Birds, where the owners take personally responsibility for the health and welfare of their animals.
Grooming - I have even tried vet offices for grooming in the past. No more. Discount Birds does grooming on Saturdays - and they have an expert pair who do the feather, toe, and beak work. (Be sure to call in the morning to make sure they are available - not on vacation or the like).
I run a very popular parrot website, so I have heard all the horror stories about pet shops throughout the country. If they all took a lesson from Discount Birds, these beautiful creatures would all have better lives!

Meet
Category: French
Neighborhood: Culver City
Although it's called "Meet" it could also be called "Meat." The menu has three different cuts of steak as well as lamb. We skipped appetizers because we wanted to try the desserts. My friend had the filet mignon and I had the rib eye. You pick from five different sauces and we both were happy with our choice of the balsamic sauce - a nice blend of tart and sweet.
We overheard the owner (owns it with his wife) who used to have a restaurant in La Jolla - as he raved about his wonderful pastry chef. Tarte Tatin it is. My friend ordered the Lemon Tart. They were both perfect. The apples were cooked just right and pastry was buttery and sweet. The pastry chef delivered them to the table himself, then came back a few minutes later to see what we thought. Yum.
We loved how the owner, the pastry chef, and everyone else was right in there, making sure everyone was content. Our waiter, Joe, was delightful and made this such a pleasant evening. The prices were also very good for the quality of the meal.

Le Saint Amour
Category: French
Neighborhood: Culver City
They have a great outdoor seating area - this really is one of the nicest parts of downtown Culver City, with lovely trees and wide sidewalks.
When they were first working on building out this restaurant (which took a very long time), I wondered why a French restaurant would open right next to another French restaurant. It's apparent now that their neighbor is no competition and is likely cursing the day Saint Amour opened.

They were professional and friendly, and we watched them work. And man did they work! We pretty much knew it was those d#*$@ roots again. They had to snake about 75 feet and it was hard work (those roots weren't too happy about being cut up apparently).
My roommate and I were impressed, especially when we got the bill - after 2 hours of hard work it felt like a bargain.
It's nice to get honest work at an honest price! I would definitely recommend them to others and if those stinkin' roots grow back they will be the ones I call.

Old Ebbitt Grill
Categories: Nightlife, American (New)
The second set of meals was better - but my friend still got a big hunk of burned stuffing (does anyone review the plates before they go out?).
The service was very good - the waiter was apologetic and attentive and a manager came over to apologize.
The apple pie was amazing - but the waiter informed us it came from the 89 in Georgetown. You mean the best part of the meal wasn't even made here?
I guess at some point if we ever go back to DC we should give it another try on a day other than Thanksgiving!
One other big issue - we reserved a spot a month in advance for our trip, yet ended up not in the restaurant, but in the back of it in the lobby of an ugly office building. That kind of killed the mood right off the bat. I mean, we wanted to eat at Old Ebbitt's Grill, not next to a dry fountain in a run down office building lobby.
There wasn't a carpenter category so I put this under contractors.
Douglas can also paint wall murals!
He recently moved to Orange County but told me he is willing to travel throughout the area - LA to San Diego.

I can really recommend the 2-person special with four types of meat. It's a little pricey, but leads to about 2 hours of fun feasting. Because you cook them one at a time, the meal is nicely spaced so you don' t feel overstuffed.
They will refill your little side dishes as requested (the spicy kim chi was fantastic, as are the asparagus). The glass noodles are lovely (eat them right away - as they don't sit well for long but are delicious if eaten when fresh and first at the table).
I lucked out both time with the same server - he was very solicitous and adjusted to the different styles of the meals (first time was with a friend who loved all the attention; second time with a friend who finds server attention obtrusive).

See Eyewear

I will admit I am normally super picky about my frames. Usually I try on everything in the store, find one that I am semi-satisfied with, and settle on it because it's the best they have.
However, See has an amazingly fresh selection of frames (they make their own line) that are simply stunning. They range from conservative to very bold statements, with many in between.
I could have easily walked out of there with five pairs of glasses that I absolutely loved. I ended up buying two pairs instead of one I loved them both so much.
Justin delivered exceptional service, explained all the pros and cons of various choices, and gave an honest opinion of the pairs I tried on.
I cannot recommend more highly this candy store of eye glasses! I would give it 10 stars if I could. The prices are reasonable and you will be the coolest four-eyes in town.
After years of mediocrity (and boring selections) at Lenscrafters, I am no longer going to settle for that chain's high prices and poor delivery of services.

The gal at the counter was friendly and explained everything - service was very good. They offered us something to drink while we were waiting for our order and everyone was friendly.
Both of us decided to do the build-your-own sandwich. I had roast beef, bree cheese, bibb lettuce, tomato, and horseradish sauce on a baguette with a side of hummus and cucumber salad. The sandwich was terrific - roast beef was tender (most sandwich places give you tired old roast beef) and yummy. Dressing had just the right amount of bite to it. Only disappointment was the cucumber salad - just ordinary. I also had the potato leek soup which was so delicious I could have slurped up a whole tureen of it.
We shared a couple of cookies - peanut butter and chocolate chip. Really yummy good!
The decor and layout is really quite nice with a great outdoor seating area. Definitely try it out!
