Nectar Lounge

Nectar is quickly becoming my favorite venue in Seattle. It's on the smallish side, but that's about the only drawback I can think of off the top of my head. The interior is well designed, with a great view from the balcony and two bars for easy service. The patio is cozy, though too chilly for extended visits in the winter. But the talent they've been bringing in lately has been exceptional, especially for a club of their size.

You know what to expect from an English style public house (AKA pub), and the George & Dragon delivers it consistently. There's a comprehensive and consistent schedule for football (not the sissy American kind with padding), greasy plates of food that will kill you by age 40, and a decent selection of unpretentious beers. Accents abound, from patrons and staff, keeping the atmosphere authentic. So pop on in and raise a pint for Arsenal with me someday.

It's almost like stepping into a classy little time warp, and being whisked away to a more elegant age. Or it would be if it weren't for the very contemporary art, funk and hip hop records adorning the walls, and turntables on the mezzanine. There's something slightly schizophrenic about coupling the above elements with classy velvet seats, an ornate crystal chandelier, and a menu of classic cocktails. Somehow it works though, so I'm not going to complain about the anachronisms. It gives the tiny little split level bar a unique charm, upscale but not snooty.

The drink menu is excellent, starting with the classic Sazerac and including a variety of unusual signature drinks. The clear winner at our table was the Blackbird, a champagne cocktail with pomegranate liqueur, Creme de Cassis, and squid ink tincture (dropped into the drink via eyedropper, at your table). It's slightly on the pricey side here, but it definitely makes you feel like it's worth it.

Make sure you check out the peephole on the top floor while you're here.

I want to spend the entire Seattle winter here, curled up on a barstool next to their door-turned-table, Thomas Pynchon book in front of me, glass of mead to the side. I want to remember the embarassingly drunk cocktail waitress who was on duty, as well as the nonchalance of the bartender towards this fact, each time I come in, and chuckle fondly. I want to try every beverage on the rather slight menu, and I fully expect to be pleasantly surprised by each, as I was with the excellent cider. It may not actually happen, but it's worth a shot.

Frontier Restaurant

Brilliant. Fucking Brilliant.

First off, it's fucking huge. Like, 4 sizeable rooms of seating huge. It's also open 24 hours, so when you need a green chile fix, Frontier is there for you. It's also well decorated, with a variety of Southwest/Western themed artwork, much of it prominently featuring John Wayne. You have to see the enlarged halftone portrait executed entirely in different sized nails.

And the food...Oh my god the food. Western hashbrowns? A pile of cheese and green chile atop a pile of shredded fried potatoes. To die for. Excellent breakfast burritos and echiladas, fresh squeezed orange juice. Oh, and bulk tortillas and chile so you can recreate the experience at home.

Even the seemingly constant wall-to-wall crowd can't stop me from enjoying this place. There are small downsides (it's loud, it can take a while to get food while they're busy) but the quality and uniqueness of their all-burger menu (still haven't dared to try the After School Special) and the good bar service make it an overall winner. Tiffany S., below is right about the Dark and Stormy. If you're a ginger addict like me, you can't go wrong with that one. I have a feeling that you have to make it here early, or just get lucky, in order to get a seat on the patio, but goddamn does it look cute and inviting. Can't wait to see what these folks have lined up for their new joint that'll be going in on 15th in Capitol Hill, seeing as King's and Linda's are both pretty excellent.

Varsity Theatre

Category: Cinema
Neighborhood: University District

3.0 star rating

I really really like the Varsity, so it pains to me to award it only 3 stars. I wanted to give 4, but...well, let me explain.

The Varsity is on the smaller side, with only 4 theatres, but all 4 screens are usually playing something interesting, including recent movies in their second run, and special interest films that don't get much play in the big chains. Foreign, documentary, etc. You'll have to do without big chain luxuries, like stadium seating and big, cushy chairs, though. Seating and creature comforts are about what you'd expect from an older, smaller theatre.

The snack bar is maybe sliiiiiightly cheaper than a big chain theatre, and carries a few unusual items, like Izze sparkling fruit juice, so kudos there.

Being in the U district, parking can be quite tricky. There's no street parking to speak of, and no dedicated lot, so your best bet is public transit, otherwise, you're taking your chances.

So, in short...it's the little theatre that could. They play some great films, so it's worth putting up with an average-at-best atmosphere.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but where else in Capitol Hill (or anywhere, for that matter) can you get vegan sandwiches, crayons, produce, snack food, TV dinners, handmade deli sandwiches, deep fried turkey (during Thanksgiving), aspirin, video rentals, packaged sushi, cigarettes, malt liquor, pornography (on video and in print) and candy? Your one stop shop for all the essentials of modern city living, with just a little bit of neighborhood charm too top it off. Oh, and you have to love the hand-drawn sandwich board signs that riff off various pop culture and current events touchstones.

I really wasn't impressed at all. If you're into the superhero books from the big publishers, you'll probably find you want here, but otherwise your chances are slim. Sure, they have a halfway decent stock of trade paperbacks from small publishers, and a scattered assortment of recent issues as well, but their main focus is on the collectibles and overpriced back issues. The selection of non-comic related merchandise is probably the most interesting thing about the store. I mean, where else outside of Hollywood can you find movie scripts and screenplays for sale? I have to give some props for that.

Similar to the downtown location, but a little smaller, and with a browseable bin of back issues. Still the same great selection and service, though, catering to multiple tastes and managing to satisfy them all.
