Great location in the heart of Coconut Grove, across from the Barnacle, one of the few truly authentic places in Miami. The prices are reasonable. The mussels were divine, and our server Johanna was both adorable and attentive. The manager Britt did a lovely job making us feel very welcome, in a genuine way. He surprised us with a complimentary glass of champagne. Great place for a date or get together with friends. I would absolutely recommend Lulu to anyone in the area, or anyone looking for a good excuse to come to the Grove.
While we were in Key West, John and Laura suggested that we go to Blue Heaven for brunch. If you've never heard of Blue Heaven and you're not from the islands, you should know that it's probably unlike any other place (much less, any other restaurant) you've ever been to. Chances are that you'll wait for a while and then be seated at a picnic table on a dirt flooor, beneath a canopy of enormous almond trees. Between the trees above you is an awning of sorts made entirely of white ship sails. Clucking and pecking and poking around on the ground around your feet are chickens and roosters and cats. There is a rooster altar on the back fence and a surprisingly large cistern perched on top of the bar. As if all of this wasn't enough "character" for any given restaurant, it's still possible to go upstairs and explore the small rooms that served as a brothel 100 years ago. Even the peep-holes are still functional.
I ordered Key West Shrimp Benedict and had some of Laura's banana pancakes, both of which were mouth-wateringly delicious. For the record, the bloody marys at Blue Heaven are also perfect.
