Burma Superstar

Category: Burmese
Neighborhoods: Temescal, North Oakland

4.0 star rating

The buzz, the decor, the collaborative service where we felt as well handled as I did at Gary Danko, the tamarind drink, the swat team like swarm of staff who descended on the floor and table when my friend's drink tipped over, the coconut rice, house-made tofu, the coconut milk in the coconut, the rainbow salad...we were smitten. Positively smitten.

Yes it's expensive. Yes the pork potato curry and kabocha tofu didn't blow my mind. But there are about 50 other items on the menu, and we had such a wonderful experience at Burma Superstar I intend to go back again and again. Good time.

Supercuts

All my friends ask me where I get my hair cut. They mentally double take when I tell them Super Cuts. I've been to this one several times and my hair always looks stellar. This time I showed a pic of a certain woman who has been seen on a show where people try to win a singing competition that rhymes with Where I Can Fly Doll. My hair turned out better than hers and if you don't believe me tell me so when you see me!

It's cheap, it's fast, it's simple. I haven't read the bad reviews but someone said "I go here when I just want the stylist to do what I ask." And that's what I do, always with good results. Just like a good old fashioned barber shop.

Tony's Pizza Napoletana

Tony and I were meant to be. Arrived 6:30 on a Saturday night to hear there was a 1.75 hour wait. A minute later two bar stools opened up. 10 minutes later we had our draft beers and bread with olive oil and garlic to dip. 15 minutes later a sublime pizza with a chewy crust I also dipped into olive oil along with a caesar salad made with dark green Romaine leaves that perfectly balanced healthy with decadence.

I'm not sure how I'd have felt if we'd waited for 2 hours for the same meal, but this first experience was pure magic. Can't wait to return.

Shanghai Red's

We arrived at the restaurant as the sun was setting over the marina, a gorgeous backdrop. Shanghai Red's could be a training ground for every aspiring waiter. It's like 1940s style service in a place where you learn at school. Simply pleasurable. From the bread to my chicken caesar salad to everyone else's dishes, we enjoyed everything...although I feel the location is what makes the prices high rather than the food itself.

According to my elders,  they have a great bar scene too with a separate snack menu that my friends love.

With various rooms and a patio outside overlooking the water, it's one of those great classic / old-fashioned sorts of places to bring a multi generation of family - which many dining there had done.

I met Carol at an open house, and her combination of smarts, snarkiness, straightforwardness, and maybe some other "s's" made me fall in house-hunting-love.  She works constantly, is very responsive, is a wonderful guide in outlining priorities and finding resources (her emails would be the envy of a project manager), had a great sense of my needs (which changed often). With iphone flashlight in hand, she would happily crawl under houses to poke around and get the real story. She is fascinated by construction and learning all about the issues around buying and fixing up houses, which is very helpful. I'm glad she stuck with me through all of our house viewings and offers as I ended up with a great place.

PS She didn't take the money and run. She pulled together a fabulous party with restaurant quality food and booze. With a bunch of friends warming my house, it was a lovely way to conclude what is usually just a transaction.

Troy Greek Cuisine

By some act of magic I ended up at Troy by accident and boy am I thrilled. Greek food in the Elmwood! I never would have thunk it. House made spanakopita, generous portions of beef souvlaki, and heavenly eggplant salad with just enough caper for flavor but not salty, all reasonably priced in a very pleasant restaurant. Loved the bread too. I left dancing to Zorba the Greek, because of course isn't that the only music they have in Greece? Luckily in Berkeley I can be as weird as I want.

I don't go out much for Mediterranean food as I make it a lot at home but will definitely be back again and again. (PS even the guys from the Sicilian joint down the street get their Greek fix here.)

Peet's Coffee & Tea

My review is merely of this location, not of Peet's in general.
I was mildly conflicted about a "chain" going in, in this area, although Peet's is the first best thing as a local company if you're going to have a chain. This is a fabulous location and is going to be my Peet's go-to. Light bright and of course brand spanking new and shiny with lots of outdoor seating. The coffee place down the street was overflowing as usual, and I know that there is more than enough room for several cafes in this area.

Powell's Sweet Shoppe

Category: Candy Stores
Neighborhoods: Rockridge, North Oakland

I had a really great experience at Powell's Sweet Shoppe, mostly thanks to a very helpful guy working there who had the joie of an old fashioned soda jerk (back when jerk meant people jerking a soda machine handle). You really do feel like a kid in a candy store there and although maybe he should get hazard pay if he has to listen to Willy Wonka all day, it's great to have this kind of store for all the little kids and adults to enjoy. It's a Northern California based franchise and I hope they do really well! Now back to my regularly scheduled licorice.

My stars are not for "the best candy" per se but for the category of "old fashioned candy shop."

Five stars for hella cheap black and white printing. When online just won't do and you need to print a huge job cheaply, this is the copy place. They are fast, friendly, and no nonsense. I haven't tried their other services but they have been around a long time. Good old fashioned small business.

A short review, but what more is there to say?

Chocolate Covered

I'd always seen Chocolate Covered's cute tins imprinted with San Francisco neighborhood streets etc. but only recently did I delve into the depths of this chocolate plastered mecca. My fantasy is buying a few of their retro metal lunchboxes and filling them up with chocolate bars from all over the country and world.

Even the most jaded and savvy chocolate lover will be sure to find something you haven't seen or tried before. The staff are as passionate as I am about all things sweet and brown, and we had a great time geeking out over the various local chocolate bon bons and bars filled with herbs, nuts, and all sorts of exotic fillings.

In short -- if you love candy and chocolate, this store is a must visit! (I recommend the Junior Mints lunchbox. Sooo cute!)
