Static Salon

I have been taking my 13 year old daughter to Tony at Static since he began there. She walks right in, he usually takes her immediately, offers her tea or water, and she settles in for her appt. She loves the attention she gets and doesn't want anyone, (namely ME,) doing her hair anymore. She has extremely tight curls that makes her hair look 3 times shorter than what it really is. When she leaves Static her hair is always soft, bouncy and manageable. On our last visit, she decided to color her hair, and Tony punched up her indescript brown hair with a richer brown and gave her a cute emo hair cut.. something you see few African-American kids with. He even took the time to put in and cut a set of colored clip-in's that she'd bought at Hot Topic. Now that she's decided she like the streaks, she can't wait for Tony to dye her hair!

I HIGHLY recommend Static. Its convenient location makes it easy for me to grab lunch while my daughter is getting her hair done or send my teenage son down to Golden Apple Comics so he's not bored to death waiting for his sister. Top notch!

love, Love, LOVE this place! I have always been a little skeptical of little hole in the wall Asian massage places that charge cheap prices... I guess i'm just a little jaded and am nervous about walking into the middle of a rub and tug bust. ;-)

My boyfriend decided he wanted to stop in for a quick massage when we were leaving CVS one day. We had my 12 year old with us and asked if she could get a massage as well. To my surprise, the guy said yes! We were thrilled to be able to take her to get massages with us, and the price point was perfect for all 3 of us.

When we first walked in, all you see is the desk and floor to ceiling curtain. Once escorted inside, the lights are extremely low to where it almost takes a minute to see where you are going. The massage chairs are huge, comfy and there are lots of men AND women usually lying in them getting massaged or waiting for one.

They only have 2 or 3 curtained off massage rooms, all side by side. Focus here is on massage not on aesthetics. The rooms are small, just big enough for the massage table and a side table. The massages are dynamite. I've had several different therapists and each one of them has dug deep into my knots. Some therapists actually climb up on the table using knees as well as elbows to dig in there and break up whatever ails me.

The foot massages all start with a foot bath in a small tub lined with a plastic bag, (very typical of nail salons it seems.) Then there is a fantastic head & scalp massage along with arms. Honestly, after having a full body massage, I really don't need this extra bit, but for the money, I'm not one to complain. :) The foot massage itself varies from practitioner, with most really getting into it. They therapists are very good and taking direction in my experience.

One of the things I love the most about this place is the ability to come in and be seen relatively quickly most days. Obviously after work is their busiest time, so keep that in mind. My daughter loves joining me for massages, and my boyfriend and I treat each other frequently.

Generally we always get the 30 minute full body & 30 minute foot massage for only $30. Quite a steal considering I usually pay between $150-200 for an hour massage and my favorite high end spas - and that's for Swedish where as this place really is more deep tissue/ therapeutic.

Skydive Perris

A friend of mine was in town visiting and wanted to go skydiving. We decided to venture off to Perris Valley only after determining that the drive to Santa Barbara was too far get to and back in time for his flight. The drive to Perris Valley/ Lake Elsinore was a bit far... and Google maps kinda screwed with us at the very end near the jump site, but it was relatively easy to find.

We were the last jump of the day, so we were greeted quickly yet in a friendly manner. They showed us a video on the 2 different video packages first, and although we had already decided on the pro-package, we watched intensely. With the basic video package, the instructor for your tandem jump wears a wrist camera that shows you and everything around you for $60.00. The Pro-Video package includes the wrist camera PLUS a solo jumper with both a still and video camera who takes external video and stills of you every step of the way from boarding the flight to jumping off the plane, even taking mid-air shots and your landing. Having a jumper with you costs an additional $135.00. The pro-package is a must for all first time jumpers in my opinion as you are going to want to share the experience with your friends and family. You also receive a first jump certificate with your pro-video package. The DVD case with your photo and video DVDs is ready within minutes after your jump is completed.

After the low-pressure sales pitch, you are taken to another room to literally sign your life away with their ginormous waiver and release. While signing the release you watch a video with their lawyer explaining certain aspects of the waiver, mainly that in the event of death or injury you or your family may not collect any damages against the facility. (Nice!)

Once all the grim reaper stuff is finished... you then go out to the school and meet your instructors. We were able to watch some other students come in for landings before being suited up. Our instructors were awesome, easy-going and a lot of fun. One of our instructors had 6,000 jumps under his belt! When we boarded our flight, I explained that I am a porn star, and my instructor, Adi, mentioned that if I flashed the pilot he'd take us up a little higher which would give us a few more seconds of free-fall.. Of course I did! Instead of going up the 12,500 feet we paid for, my flashing took us up to 14,000 feet. :)

The entire time from suiting up to being harnessed to my instructor on the plane, Adi continually asked me, (in an easy going manner,) if I was okay and still wanted to do this. I had already been informed by my friend that for safety reasons, the instructors frequently check in with you to make sure you still want to jump and that if at any time you don't want to go, if if at the door, they will stop, turn around and not take you out. I loved that my instructor kept it friendly and wasn't so serious as it made me less nervous.

We watched some other (solo) jumpers go out at 5,000 feet, then we went up to our altitude of 14,000. My cameraman/ jumper took photos and videos of other people on the plane as well... so as to give my photos a full range. My friend jumped first, then I followed... I wasn't nervous until I got out into the air and realized there was no going back... I was in the sky! The minute and a half of free fall was un-nerving at first, but once I reconciled myself with the fact that I'd be okay, I smiled for the camera, gave thumbs up, blew kisses... all the things it was recommended I do for the camera. The instructor explained that the bigger your smile, the less likely you are to have wind blown cheeks in the photos, so I smiled big! It was easy to do so, because I was elated over the whole experience!

Once we deployed the parachute, we navigated towards my friend so I could not only say hello within range of haring one another, but I could flash him as well. :) We came in for a perfect landing, where I literally walked right out of the air and onto the ground. ;-)

The cameraman approached me and did a post jump interview... which lead me to admit that I would totally do it again! This place was awesome, and well worth the drive. Their rates are $209.00 weekdays/ $219.00/ weekends. Prepaying on the weekends (basically anytime before you arrive,) garners you a discounted rate of $189.00. They do offer military, (unsure about student,) discounts.

Additional perks are a wind tunnel for pre-jump classes and a restaurant, (we used neither except to use the restroom in the restaurant and pick up our free t-shirts in the wind tunnel store.)

Pride Tattoo

I was visiting South Beach, Miami for the Exxxotica Miami convention May 8-10. I met Jorge Pedraza, one of the talented artists at Pride's Tattoo during the convention. After talking about my desire to get a tattoo during my visit, he offered to open up the shop after hours to accommodate my hectic schedule during the show. And that he did...

It's nice to receive "star" treatment from time to time, but Jorge and Pride's Tattoo really went above and beyond for me. Customer service is definitely on the stop of their priorities list.

Jorge took the time to help me find exactly what I wanted, the created a custom design that not only fit the area that I was looking to cover, (a surgical scar from Ovarian Cancer 5 years ago,) but also helped me reach a decision on something that was both elegant and dainty, (exactly what I was looking for,) to cover a sizable area. He re-drew the design on me several times until I was happy with the outcome, and was quite patient with my indecisiveness and desires.

As for the shop itself, the layout was spacious, the equipment sterile, and the environment clean and inviting. I went back in the afternoon the following day to pick up my cellphone charger and there were a few people hanging out... but it was still someplace I would have felt comfortable as a woman.

There are posters of some of their celebrity clients hanging about the shop, and despite their status, you don't feel like you are being price gouged walking out the door.

I definitely would recommend a visit to Pride's Tattoo if you are looking to add some ink during a visit to South Beach!

OMIGOD.. this guy is the real deal!

Dr. Franco specializes in cosmetic dermatology, but I've been seeing him for medical weight loss. His office is in a crappy looking medical office bldg in Sherman Oaks from the outside, but once inside the dimly lit waiting area, the office staff offers you something to drink to relax you. The wait is never long, but the music is more modern and not the typical MUSIAK you get in doctor's offices. The fireplace is always lit, and the gorgeous staff is always dressed in black. Very chic.. for a doctor's office. ;)

The treatment rooms are a bit chillier of course, but Dr.  Franco's personality is wonderful. I've called that I was arriving late for an appointment and they will try to fit me in. In the 6-8 weeks I have been seeing the doctor, I have lost 15 pounds. He took the time to go over the weight loss process and diet with me, almost 30 minutes on my initial visit. He's not cheap, but reasonably priced. $160/ initial visit and $80/ every two weeks after. He checks blood pressure and heart on subsequent visits. The cost of his visits INCLUDE the cost of medication! That won me over as diet pills can be quite pricey. Medical weight loss through Dr. Franco includes Diet pills, diet and exercise.

I'm looking forward to losing another 15 pounds with Dr. Franco before the year is out! 2 of my friends are doing the diet with me, one has lost 25 pounds in less time as me! Another friend sees him for botox, spider veins and excema and swears by him... she's the one that introduced me to this amazing doctor. :)

I bring my cocker spaniel here all the time. I swear he knows he's where he's going the minute he gets out the car. He seems so excited to be there and starts jumping up and down to get into the door for his bath and haircut. They have a buy 10 get 1 free deal on grooming with your petco pals card... I'd forgotten all about it until the coupon came in the mail! There were no gimmicks attached, and it was a true, free full grooming or full bath. I usually get the works package, but this was perfect and included his usual haircut.

I've never had a problem with him getting nicked or cut and they've always followed my wishes with him being cut lower than normal and not receiving his usual cocker cut. I have seen them get a little frustrated with owners that don't understand why they can't clip their hissing cats claws... but other than that it has always been a pleasure to use their services for me and my boy.

Beautiful property. Comfortable King size room. Non-Smoking actually was, non-smoking. Free wireless in the room that actually worked. Ordered a lovely bottle of Shiraz from room service late night that was appeasing.

Gym was clean, working wide range of equipment. Spa looked good from the exterior. Paid for a 50 minute deep tissue massage, (roughly $110) and received ore of a deep swedish. Definitely NOT worth the price tag. Tried enjoying the spa facilities afterwards, but the steam room was boiling hot. Open locker/ changing area, with the exception of the bathroom stalls. Food basically sucked ass. Seriously. Then to top it off, the car service the concierge arranged to take me to the airport the next morning arrived over 15 minutes late.

I wasn't terribly annoyed about needing to repetitively showing my key and having it swiped to get upstairs, but as long as you know that going in, you adapt rather quickly.

I'm a professional traveler so I expect more from a hotel of this caliber.

Took my 4 year old cocker spaniel here for the first time today. Duke is a recent, (late November,) rescue, and is still new to socializing. He was welcomed with open paws by everyone. I wasn't sure what to expect, but he took right too the big dog park and even when playing and exerting dominance, we didn't run into any problems. The humans were just as friendly as the animals... Even my 10 year old daughter has a blast!

Fingers N' Toes - CLOSED

When I first moved from Downtown LA to the Valley, I dreaded finding new places for my favorite services such as nails, etc. in my new neighborhood. After a horrendously uninspired experience with another place nearby, I found Fingers and Toes here on Yelp. The salon offers a spa pedicure that was similar with the spa pedi I was accustomed to getting at Gloss Spa in Silverlake so I was excited to check it out in person.

The spa looks exactly as it does in photos and the owner and other manicurists are wonderful. No pressure sales for additional treatments,  but like many salons or spas that utilize a particular brand, be prepared for to be pitched for purchase. The nice thing is that they are not pushy and accept no gracefully. (Love it!) The prices are reasonable and the service sublime.

My 10 year old daughter is absolutely loves getting her princess mani pedi, (only $12!) and the staff is patient with her messing them up over and over while waiting for them to dry. :)

So far I've had mani, spa pedi and facial there and am happy with the results. I'm really glad I've found FNG! This is my new little Oasis in the Valley.
