I stayed at a hotel downtown and decided to try this place because I am vegan, and they deliver. I ordered the Buffalo Tofu Sandwich, which was so good that I ordered it twice. The first time I opted for onion rings, where excellent, the second time I asked for fried artichoke hearts (as a separate side), which were unbelievably good. The herbed orzo was a disappointment (did the job, just not amazing), but overall, if what I ordered is any indication of the quality of the other vegetarian items on the menu, I will definitely order from this place again if I am ever in Richmond.

Finally, I am extremely grateful that they deliver. If you are staying downtown, there is almost nothing for vegetarians (many restaurants downtown don't even have a single vegetarian dish on the menu, although most will make one if you ask), and many places either close early or open late or are not opened at all on the weekends, so the fact that they are one of the few vegan-friendly places that deliver is hugely helpful.

Theatre Row Diner

My wife and I have eaten here many times out of convenience since we live close by. We don't think it's as good as Westway Diner or Market Diner, or many of the other diners in Hell's Kitchen, but we had a $50 gift certificate, which they generously donated to a local school.

The food is OK, but they don't offer waffle fries, like many other diners in the area. The lettuce was fresh, but they gave me a tomato slice with the stem end of the tomato. What's up with that? I certainly don't want to chew into that if I put this on my burger.

The waitress was slow, and chuckled at us when we said we didn't want our veggie burgers with cheese or cole slaw. When I said I didn't want the cole slaw at all, she said, "they'll just put it in the side."

All that aside, the real reason I am only giving this place one star is because after we ordered ca. $20 worth of food, we asked if we could have credit toward our next meal, since we didn't even use 1/2 of our gift certificate. after ten minutes of waiting, the waitress comes back and says that the gift certificate is only good for one meal, no matter how much we spend or eat. This is NOT how it's usually done, at least with Westway and other diners in the neighborhood. It seems like if they are going to offer $50 credit, they should offer that, and not try to cheap out of giving what they donate. We asked for the manager.

The manager comes over and is incredibly rude. He slams his finger on the gift certificate and says. "it says right here: no cash value." Maybe he has a point, but what we really think is that he doesn't want to donate the full amount. What a jerk.

Between this horrible experience, the so-so service, the average-quality food, the rude manager and the waitress who laughed at us, we will NOT be going back. We've had great experiences at Market Diner on 11th Ave.and Westway Diner on 9th Ave (Westway, by the way, does offer gift certificate credit if you only use part of a certificate), and these two places are where we will be going from now on, no matter what.

Our final verdict: take your business elsewhere!

Canfield Design Studios is based in both San Francisco and New York City.

We run two businesses and also have personal websites. Canfield Design Studios has designed three of our four sites, and we always get wonderful compliments on her work.

Kathy Canfield Shepard and her team are extremely easy to work with. When she says she'll finish your site, she means it. She is a rare find among web designers. She is also extremely organized. One look at her site will tell you that. She sat down with us for each project and asked us what we wanted. She then gave us a few designs that we could choose from along with suggestions and ideas. She really works hard to make sure you are happy, and completely understands technology and recent developments in website design. Many of her clients are in the arts, but she also does sites for high-end businesses as well. If you need updates, she can work with you to either set up your site so you can do the updates, or her team can do them for you, or a combination of both.

All in all, we are extremely happy with the work she has done for us and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a high-quality site that is designed on time, by experts who take the time to understand what you need.

This review is geared toward vegans and vegetarians, so if you're interested in that, read on...

They have traditional Chinese menus, which offer quite a bit that can be made vegetarian, but they also have a separate vegetarian menu. It is quite surprising to find such an extensive list of veggie Chinese dishes outside of cities like NYC and San Francisco. They offer dishes like veggie Moo Shu Vegetable made with mock meat, mock red pork, lots of veggie dishes, General Tsao's Tofu, or the same dish made with mock chicken.

This isn't a tremendously fancy restaurant, and the prices are not totally cheap, but all in all, this is about the best Chinese food you'll get in Burlington, and has one of the best selections for vegans and vegetarians, except for A Single Pebble downtown. My only gripe is I wish they would indicate if a dish is vegan or vegetarian, but I asked, and everything we ordered was vegan.

We run a non-profit music ensemble and an indie record company in New York City, and have retained Nina Kaufman as our lawyer for over six years. It doesn't get any better than Nina for anyone who is an entrepreneur or runs his or her own business. Her wonderful website is a vast, treasure trove of information, and she is extremely intelligent and energetic, and is always prompt, efficient, and friendly. Finding all of these qualities in one person if difficult enough, but in a lawyer? Pretty rare, I think. Quite simply, we love working with her. How many people can say that about their lawyer?

Chanpen Thai Restaurant

In a  neighborhood chock full of Thai restaurants (Tai & Thai, Chili Thai, etc.), you can find better. The atmosphere is old school, and nice, but not at all hip--a nice Americanized Thai restaurant to take you parents or grandparents to if they are on the conservative side.

Now, on to the food. We live in Hell's Kitchen, so get take-out occasionally, and this time we ordered the Massaman Curry with Tofu (more on that in a second), the Red Curry with vegetarian duck, and the Pad Kee Mau noodles (spicy flat noodles, I think that's what they're called). The noodles were amazing, the Red curry was also excellent, but the Massaman curry was awful: very bland, totally watery, NO TOFU and maybe two potatoes in the entire dish. What's up with that? We even ordered two, and both contained no tofu and almost no potatoes. Perhaps they thought we said veggies only, but we didn't. We complained and they delivered another dish for free, their Panang Curry, but it was also equally watery, although it had a lot of tofu, so that was nice, but this dish also wasn't that good.

We order Thai all the time for other restaurants in the hood. The curries are generally thicker and not as runny at the other restaurants, and have more flavor.

All in all, if you are close by and are looking for a Thai restaurant with a pleasant and serene atmosphere, this will work, but for food quality, you can do better. We are not sure what happened: we remembered liking this place years ago, so either our tastes went up or the quality here went down.

Essentia Mattresses - All Natural Memory Foam - CLOSED

We actually bought our mattress directly from the company, so this is really more a review of the mattress than this outlet. But we just wanted to say that this is by far the best mattress we have ever slept on, period. We used to occasionally wake up with a stiff neck or back problems--and we are quite healthy and fit, BTW--but they disappeared after sleeping on this mattress. It has no smell, that we can detect, and is extremely comfortable. Yes, it is more expensive than many other mattresses, but it lasts a lot longer, and we love it. We have absolutely no regrets. Our strongest recommendation.

My family has been seeing Dr. Metrick for ca. five years, and he is the best dentist we have ever had. We like him so much that even though we live in Hell's Kitchen now, we still go see him. He is very good about making sure you are not in pain, and is always double-checking to make sure you are OK while he is working on you. He is very calm, friendly, methodical and has only done excellent work on our teeth.

The office staff members are also incredibly nice, and there are lots of magazines, books and a few kids toys. His office is right next door the the 181st Street Station.

As an aside, we are both musicians, and he has always been very supportive of both his community and any musicians or artists that come to see him.

All in all, you can't do better than Dr. Metrick if you need a dentist in NYC. Our highest recommendation.

American Home Hardware & More

I really appreciate having such a comprehensive hardware store right in my neighborhood. They are well-stocked, have just about everything you would normally need that you find at hardware stores, and the "blowhard" who owns the place aside (@Bill G - pretty funny), the staff seem pretty nice, if a little gruff.

Now, I realize that these mom and pop stores need to mark up their prices, especially in NYC, and are not able to compete with big box stores and Amazon with regard to price, especially since they do not have enough space to stock tons of stuff, but that doesn't mean they can mark up stuff way, way over prices are larger stores. For example, I just purchased a heavy duty Arrow stapler, which they sold me for $39,99. On Amazon, I could have bought it for $28,32, with shipping, and no tax. So my question is, do they really need to mark it up that much? That seems a really steep, and it makes me not want to support them.

My second complaint is their return policy. Apparently, they only accept returns of unopened merchandise for store credit. Really? Seriously? With all the competition out there, and in the age of the Internet and Amazon, that's the best they can do?

My third gripe is that they seem really sloppy with their pricing. Some items are not priced, and sometimes when you ask for a price, it's almost like they are pulling it out of thin air. It's usually Feix in the back who all the staff members ask, and it definitely seems like there's no standard mark-up for anything--it's a total guessing game if the price isn't already on the item. I guess it depends on his mood.

Finally, they do not use digital cash registers, so everything is printed out old-style. Not a big deal, but good luck looking at the receipt later to see exactly what you paid for what.

All in all, I will continue to patronize this store since it is super convenient and will have what I need in a pinch, but if I know ahead of time what I want, and it is a costly, I will definitely purchase online or elsewhere. Show owner comment »

I thoroughly researched chiropractors in Manhattan and decided to try Dr. Jay. It was one of the best medical decisions I have ever made.

I am a professional musician, and my back was in extreme pain, including suffering from a tingling index finger. After a few months of treatments and exercises, my pain is almost entirely gone. The exercises he assigned were crucial to my recovery, and I wouldn't have figured them out without his guidance. The proof was clear when he showed me before and after x-rays of my spine and neck from my first visit and last week. My spine had a slight curve but is much straighter now, and the vertebrae in my neck are aligned much more correctly. I was actually shocked to see the improvement. Obviously I felt it, but to see it via x-rays was amazing. Quite simply, I haven't felt this good in years.

Dr. Jay loves what he does, and it is apparent in his unwavering enthusiasm for his patients and their recovery. His sunny disposition and friendly office staff makes each visit a pleasure.

If you need a chiropractor in Manhattan, you can't go wrong with Dr. Jay. He is amazing, and receives my highest recommendation.
