Ruby Table - CLOSED

Wow, this place is closed?  Should I be surprised?  No, but it wasn't a bad place so I still am.  The ambience is nice, but the food prices for the amount of food you get wasn't that great.  The food was decent, but the place was pretty empty while I ate there with my girlfriend.  I guess there isn't much point in writing more about this place since it isn't there anymore, but time to find a different happy hour place.

King's Garden Chinese Restaurant

Korean-Chinese owned restaurant.  Yes, we've seen them, and we know they can be good.  Well, I hope people know there are good ones out there.  This one wasn't bad also.  Of course, when I'm at a Korean-Chinese restaurant, I usually get either the Jjampong (Korean seafood spicy noodle soup) or JjaJjangmyung (Blackbean noodles) with Tangsooyoook (Deep fried meat, in this case, pork).  The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great hence the 3 star rating.   The service is pretty much what you'd expect from a Korean restaurant.  It doesn't make it right, but I've come to expect it which is raising your hand and calling out to the waitress to get attention otherwise you won't get any.  The price is decent, but I've seen cheaper for the same quality of food.  We were sat in the very corner of the restaurant near the kitchen and open door in the back.  At least waitresses always had to pass us by.    Decent food, and I would come back again, but not very often.

I gave the place 4 stars because I came at happy hour.  Was the food and drinks worth it for happy hour?  Well yes.  Is it worth it without it? I would probably choose to go somewhere else.  They have a nice selection of happy hour food, and their drinks are cheap.  However, one time, I saw a bug in my drink and I told the bartender just to let him know, but the first thing he told me was that he wasn't going to give me a full beer.  He'll only give me as much as I had left which was about half the drink.  Did he really have to come out and have that be the first thing he says?  I don't know...

Well the place is nice, clean, and big.  The waiters and waitresses are friendly, but sometimes the service can be really slow even during the slow hours.  Average service, but better than average happy hour food.

These sandwiches are really good.  It's not only because it's cheap which made it even better, but it's just plain good.  The place might look a bit shabby, but don't let that repel you away from this place.  I also got spring rolls from here which were okay, however, it might be better to just stick with the banh mi here since that's what it's known for.

Tahoe Galbi

A clean establishment with pretty solid food especially for AYCE.  The service isn't that great though, but serviceable enough for me to not get fed up with.  They give you a lot of banchan (side dishes) along with some pretty good tasting meats.  I always love the galbi the best, but I can eat almost all of it.

The prices are definitely fair, and make sure you to make full use of the service button located on top of the table otherwise you're going to be waiting a pretty good while if you want service because it gets pretty chaotic in there at times.  At the end of your meal, they serve you gyeran jjim (steamed egg custard).  One of the places I'd prefer over other Korean BBQ places around the area.

Philly's Best

Small sandwich type place.  The philly cheesesteaks are good, but I'm surprised by the comments of how great this place is.  I don't believe it's anywhere close to being the best, but definitely not bad tasting food.  The Phillies took a bit of time to make, but it wasn't much to complain about.  The fries are great.  There's also a small little bar for peppers and condiments.  The prices are fair.  Overall, the food is just a step above average.

I was debating whether or not this place should receiver 3 or 4 stars.  The service wasn't all there, but the flautas and tacos along with the price during happy hour was really good.  The food won me over this time.  The place can really fill me up without having to spend much, and I keep munching on those tortilla chips they give with their salsa.   Though there's a few places to eat around there, I'm not disappointed about going here.

Hikari Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar

It's going to be a hit or a miss here.  I've already been here a few times.  First couple of times, it was a bit above average.  The sashimi wasn't the greatest I've had at a AYCE (All You Can Eat), but it's awesome that they even had all you can eat sashimi.  One time I went, the fish was just amazing.  The service was pretty good also.  Having them do half rice rolls are great, and they'll try to accommodate by making you a roll that you want.  However, the last time I went, most of the fish looked a bit off, pale, or not exactly the right color, but my girlfriend and I ate it anyways.  Our stomachs were in great amounts of pain afterwards.  It must have been an off day there since almost everything (even the fried foods were overcooked) looked a bit off except the super white tuna and salmon.  It's forgivable this time since this hasn't happened before and the manager was nice enough to give me a refund.

You can either sit at the sushi bar or the regular dining areas.  There's a small television around the sushi bar, but sometimes the chefs seem to get distracted by it.  It's ok, they're friendly and make corny jokes.  The service is a bit funny since the waitresses forget about a few dishes since people order so much.  It's okay since the chefs hands out the orders pretty quickly.

The place isn't too shabby, but I wouldn't consider it the a very nice sushi atmosphere.  I'm not trying to knock it, it's just the truth.  The waitresses and chefs are friendly.  So hopefully you're here on a good day when you pass by.

Monsoon Fine Cuisine of India

First off, I love downtown San Diego's Gaslamp district.  Anyways, on to the review.  The hostess and waiter were very friendly.  My girlfriend and I had found a deal on Yelp (of course) about this place.  The owner couldn't oblige because of some technical issue, but after I found another better deal online, the waiter somehow got the owner to accomodate so I thank that waiter very much.

The food came in these small round metal dishes that you can see at other Indian restaurants.  The dishes were all prepared very well, and tasted like how I would expect a nice restaurant to be.  (It was good, just in case you didn't understand.)  The service was great, the ambience felt cozy, and the prices were adequate.  The quanity of food wasn't as big as I thought it would be, but it hit the spot.  I'll be sure to remember this place if I want Indian downtown.

It's like Panda Express, but for Indian food.  Their food is much better than I expected for a fast food place.  I love their vegetable korma.  Their curries were very good too.  This place should be expanded out to other areas than San Diego.
