Merrylee Road Bar and Kitchen

Category: Restaurants

3.0 star rating

I'd say this place has potential but it's not quite there.  The main dining room is too brightly lit and the red candles are very gaudy.  The menu is mostly Scottish classics but veers off into pretentious territory for no good reason (tiger prawns in a thai curry?  Really?  Don't try to be something you're not--stick to what you're good at).

The food, however, does deliver and the service is good.  The south side has a paucity of nice restaurants so I hope Merrylee works out the kinks and sticks to what it's good at--upscale pub food in what could be an elegant dining room.

After two bad salons, I warily made my way to James Dun.  I like Aveda concept salons, but that doesn't guarantee a good stylist--just lots of great products and warm, lovely service.  All that was on hand as I received a free manicure while waiting for Colin, my stylist, to finish up.  A free manicure!

Like a crazy person I brought a photo of my own self with my pre-Glasgow haircut which I loved and had been destroyed by local hair dressers.  Colin got it immediately, what I wanted my hair to look like.  He also did that thing that I like my stylist to do, which is talk knowledgeably and with enthusiasm about hair and curly hair in particular.

Before the cut I got another freebie--a head massage--before getting my hair washed.  I was in love with this place by then.  And then Colin sealed the deal by giving me a great little haircut that I love.  It's flattering, it's modern, and it suits me to a T.  Plus he is fun and easy to chat away with.  I've been back again and the second haircut lived up to the first.

So I can recommend this place for curly girls, and for those who want a nice, pampering experience with knowledgeable and charming staff.

Yes, I was a little wary to try Mexican in Glasgow, but this place did not disappoint.  The meat is spiced quite well--in fact it's pretty hot, so go easy on the hot sauces if you're not one for spicy food.  The portions are generous and everything is tasty.

They aren't too great at wrapping the burrito, I think because the portions are a little too generous.  The point of a burrito is that you can walk away and eat it, but these are overstuffed and always have something dribbling out of them.

Still, I like it and will be back.  It's a casual little fast food joint where you can go in and out if you want or sit with a beer and linger.  It's not exactly like my Texan mother would make, but it's a pretty great start for Mexican in Glasgow.

I love this place and eat here all the time for lunch.  The sandwiches and soups are flavorful, hearty, and sumptuous despite not having any meat.  I love the studenty, chilled out atmosphere and alternative ethos.

I love it all so much that I will still give it four stars despite the consistently inept and slow service.  Never order anything here, even soup, if you're in a hurry.  Even if no one else is in the restaurant.  It will take five to ten minutes to get service and then another twenty to get your food.  But if you've got time to sit and relax and enjoy, the food here and easygoing vibe is well worth it.

I've never seen a show here, but I like that when a show is on the sound doesn't bleed into the dining room.  You can eat here during a show without having to shout.

I love all these places in Glasgow making authentic Scottish food from local ingredients.  Two Fat Ladies keeps up the trend with its fantastic turn of the (20th) century interior and seafood-loving menu.  It's utterly charming and has a great little pre-theatre menu for some after work dining.

This place is fantastic.  It's wall to wall nautical themed with charming service and delicious food.  This is the kind of place tourists dream of when they think of an old timey Scottish pub.  The seafood is fresh and the atmosphere is delightful.  If I'm ever anywhere nearby again, I'll be back.

The Wee Windae's is charming inside but the food is dire.  Go here for a drink and some nostalgia for the way pubs used to look, but don't expect to be served food the way pubs used to serve it.  Microwaved pants is all you'll get, which isn't exactly pleasant.

Alan Edwards

Someone recommended the city centre Alan Edwards for a curly cut, and a specific stylist to boot.  Stupidly, I thought I'd try their Giffnock outpost because it was more convenient to me.  Bad move.

I had a wonderful haircut when I first went in, which I stressed to my hairdresser that I really loved and did not want to deviate from.  She did a dry cut, which is the practice at this salon and when she was done the cut looked perfect.  She'd neatened out my overgrown hair, and shaped it back into it's most flattering length.

Then she washed my hair and cut at it some more.  I didn't think much of this, but the finished result was that she wiped out my old hair cut and gave me this unflattering, poofy...thing.  Sad face.  I was starting a new job a few days later and was so embarrassed to go in looking a decade older than when I'd interviewed with them two weeks previously.  The haircut has finally grown out and I've found a much better stylist elsewhere, thank goodness.

Even though I've seen a good curly haircut from Elaine at the city centre location, I would never go back here.  Too traumatic!

I had a bit of sticker shock when I first ate here...in the US you can get a quality burger for a quarter of the price, but I've noticed that across Glasgow a good burger tends to be in the £8-10 range.  Fair enough, the beef is probably of better quality.

Anyway, once I got over the sticker shock, I liked it.  A burger to me is just a beef patty, none of this other nonsense with chicken and lamb and turkey.  Those are sandwiches.  So my review is on the Angus burger alone, and damn that's a good burger!  Hearty, tasty, and served with a perfect portion of fries.  I like the casual vibe of the place--you can kick back with friends or have a quick lunch.

Yep, this is a convenient city centre spot serving up a good burger in a chilled out atmosphere.

Oh my goodness, a churrascaria is the place to go if you're pregnant and craving meat like myself.  And this one did not disappoint.  The atmosphere kicks things off well by being plush, inviting and bustling.  It's not too loud and it's not too brightly lit.  Ah, heaven.

Service is simple--a waitress takes your drink order, you go to the main salad bar to fill up on salads, sauteed veg and other sides, and then waiter after waiter comes by your table with offerings of grilled meats.  There are this little coasters which you turn to green if you want more and red if you're done.  The waiters completely ignore these and just keep coming.

The sides are fantastic--fresh salads in a variety of options and enough warm sides that you could fill up those alone.  Be careful!  Remember to pace yourself.  There will plenty of time to sample it all.  Personally I kept going back for the sauteed kale and garlic mashed potatoes.  Those served with a perfectly juicy piece of steak is my idea of a perfect meal.

It's a bit spendy, but it's all you can eat.  So skip lunch and treat yourself to a delectable night out.
