Something Wicked

Just got my first tattoo from Lucky this weekend.  And it certainly won't be my last!  I stopped in Saturday, showed him what I wanted, and made an appointment for Sunday.  He did an amazing job, and then suggested some ideas to give one of my older tattoos a facelift. I've got an appointment to go back in a few weeks to do that.

Lucky was friendly, professional, and extremely talented.  I highly recommend him and this shop; I have 14 tattoos and without question his work is the best I've got.

Hazel Tree Florist

My husband has been ordering flowers for me on special occasions from this florist for the past couple of years.  He orders online (http://www.hazeltreefl...), and he said they have a great selection and nice vases to choose from.  He has never been to the actual location.

From my end, as the recipient, I have found that the flowers are always gorgeous, last for a while, have beautiful greenery included in the bouquet, and the vases are quite pretty.  I have never been disappointed with any arrangement I've received from this florist, and I would highly recommend them.

Papa John's Pizza

Category: Pizza

1 star rating
 9/14/2009
I honestly believe that Papa John's has the best pizza in the area for delivery.  HOWEVER, this location has the worst customer service and delivery issues, and finally, after many, many bad experiences, we have decided not to order from Papa John's anymore.

It's funny, because I normally will not put up with bad service at all.  But because their pizza is so good, I put up with it time and again, until finally it was just enough.

I will recount the two worst instances of customer service I had.  In June, my sister in law and nephew visited from out of state.  I ordered pizza online at about 3pm for a group of us to be delivered at 6pm.  I had other company coming over, and had ordered two large pizzas.  When the pizzas still had not arrived at 6:30, I called... I was told they were short delivery drivers and that no one could bring my pizza for at least an hour.  I asked why no one had notified me, as I'd ordered 3 hours prior, and they had no answer.  I ended up having to drive over and pick up the pizza.  They did give it to me for free, but it didn't make up for leaving company at home to go get it.

Then, two nights ago, we ordered again.  They said it would be 45 mins to an hour til it arrived.  After more than an hour, I called.  I was told the driver would be there within 5 minutes, and that he'd already left.  (The store is 10 mins from here.)  After 15 mins, I called again.  I was told that time that the driver had just left, that he is the person I talked to when I called before, and that he would be there soon.  Wait a minute!  This means someone was lying.  When the pizza arrived, it had "pepper" sprinkled all over it.  Now, I'm not saying it wasn't pepper,  but I've had that exact pizza before, and it never had black stuff all over it before.  After waiting an hour and a half for a pizza that had weird mystery stuff sprinkled all over it, we ended up not trusting it enough to eat more than a few bites. Also, on a funny note, when I called the second time to find out where the pizza was, and I said my pizza was really late, etc, they said, "Oh, is this Starbucks?"  I find that amusing because there were so many late orders... they just guessed who I was when I called. Sad.

There were other instances of just late orders or mistakes, but I am finally done.  I would NOT recommend buying pizza from this location.

Rosati's of Roseville

I can't BELIEVE I have never reviewed this restaurant before! We order from here for delivery all of the time. We really like Rosati's!

They are always nice and friendly, and they keep a credit card on file for you, if you'd like, which is quite convenient. Delivery always arrives in the stated time frame, and their food is quite good. And, I find their prices to be quite reasonable. We have never eaten in; we always order for delivery, so I don't know what it's even like in there. Below I'll give you a run down of just SOME of the things we've ordered from them.

We're not huge fans of their pizza, however, we order all sorts of other things! Everything is good! We like their salads; we used to get the Caesar but now get the Greek.

Their pasta is good, too. We've gotten the ravioli, the spaghetti, and the mostaccioli, all were good.

We've gotten the Italian sausage sandwich, The Cheef, the Italian Beef sandwich, ribs, and the chicken parmesan.

Also, their tiramisu and chocolate chip cheesecake slices are both quite yummy!

This is a great alternative to pizza or Chinese, especially since delivery options are pretty limited in our area. I do not think you'll be disappointed!

Kaio Sushi

My husband and I ate here for the first time last night, and it was quite good.  I would recommend it and I would eat there again.  Here is what we had:

Sea Steak appetizer with a mix of tuna and albacore.  Both were good, although I think I prefer the tuna, as that's what I'm used to with the sea steak. My husband thought he preferred the albacore.  Bottom line, both were good.

Crab sticks - these are like thin egg rolls, with just crab inside.  They were good, although I don't know I'd get them again, since they were kind of plain.

Shrimp tempura appetizer.  Shrimp tempura is always good!

We got two rolls:

The Red Rose roll was FANTASTIC (I want another one right now and it's only 10am).  It had asparagus and cream cheese inside, and thinly sliced tomato on top. Delicious!  So good, I highly recommend.  And, also, we requested both rolls be cut into 10 slices rather than 8, as we hate those big fat slices.

The other roll was Beginner's Luck, and it had shrimp tempura and cream cheese (we're fans of the cream cheese!) inside, and on top it had the orange fish eggs, unagi, and avocado.  It was good also; I didn't love it b/c I have mixed feelings about unagi, but that had nothing to do with the quality of this roll.

We will definitely eat here again.  The service was fast and friendly, and the restaurant is attractive and open.  A good new option for sushi in Roseville!

Thai Basil

Years ago I ate here a few times and it was ok.  Tried it again recently, and it was delicious!  Decided to pick up dinner to eat at home tonight, so my husband and I popped in, placed our order, and in 15 minutes it was ready to go.

While eating our spring rolls, I found what appeared to be a thin piece of plastic in the spring roll.  My husband and I agreed it could have been an uncooked noodle of some sort, but it didn't really appear to be.

Undeterred, I was still game and moved on to the salad, in which I promptly found a hair, definitely not mine or my husband's.  I was very grossed out, but was STILL going to keep eating, until I found another hair.  After this, I was done.  My husband then found a hair in his food as well.

Needless to say, we will never go back there again.  I called them, and they didn't seem too concerned, although there was a language barrier.  They did apologize and offer me a free salad next time.  Unfortunately, there won't be a next time, as I felt really sick and grossed out after spending over $50 on takeout.

YUCK!!

Carmel River Inn

Category: Hotels

5 star rating
 10/26/2008
We just got back from a weekend at the Carmel River Inn and it was fantastic!  This trip was for our 5 year wedding anniversary, and I let them know that when I made our reservation.  We reserved the Fannie Osborne duplex, which had a king bed, flat screen tv, and gas fireplace.  They told me there was one other they'd recommend, but it was taken already.  That was the same as Fannie Osborne, but had a whirlpool tub for two.

Well, when we arrived, we weren't sure what to expect.  The cabins don't look fancy or new from the outside.  And, I was sent to the wrong cabin... or so I thought.  Turned out they upgraded us for free to the Steinbeck duplex, which was the one with the whirlpool tub for two!  And, shortly after our arrival, there was a knock at the door... they had sent over complimentary champagne with a hand-written note wishing us a Happy Anniversary!  Color me impressed!

The room was clean, comfortable, and spacious.  It had a little private patio, and the grounds were quite nice.

The only "negative" I would say is that the hot water eventually would run out while filling the large tub.  It was warm enough to enjoy, but not as hot as I'd like.  The hot water did not run out during the shower.

I did not have high expectations of this cabin.  I had hoped it would be comfortable and clean, but it was much more than that and I would definitely stay at this property again.  The location was convenient, and the service was excellent.

One restaurant tip: we enjoyed dinner at Will's  Fargo which is 11 miles away in Carmel Valley.  We did NOT enjoy dinner at the Hog's Breath Inn in Carmel.

Callson Manor Haunted House

I went to Callson Manor last night with my husband, and visited all 3 attractions.  They were a lot of fun, with many live actors and lots of things to make you jump and scream!  Many times I grabbed the person in front of me (a total stranger) in fright, and many times I found someone clutching me that I didn't know!  That being said, it was "fun" scary, not terrifying, and probably fine for older kids.

We first checked out the Funeral Home, which was the least scary and a good way to ease into the fun.  Then we checked out the Deadlands, which were quite scary, probably the scariest, then we did the Afterlife.

The best part was when we were in the Afterlife, a mother and her sons were in front of us, they were probably 10 or so.  One was more afraid than the other, and had balked at one point and wouldn't keep going.  As a very scary actor jumped out at all of us, she finally just pushed her son towards him, screaming, "Take this one, he's weak!".  LOL, that totally  made our night.  As did the child actor at the Funeral Home who after scaring us, timidly asked if there were other people right behind us, presumably so he'd get ready to scare them too. Cute.

I think this is a fun and different idea for this area, and I totally recommend it.  We were there for about an hour and a half in total, and we got there right when it was supposed to start.  It did open a few minutes late.

One word of advice: cash only at the box office!!  And, they have a tarot reading tent, glow stick toys, and a henna tattoo tent, so if you want those things as well, bring more cash!

Ella Dining Room and Bar

Category: American (New)

3 star rating
 9/17/2008
I have been to The Kitchen multiple times, and was very excited to try Ella.  We would have tried it when it first opened, however, when we left a message on their reservation line, they never returned our call.  That left us quite unimpressed from the get go.

Finally, almost a year later for my birthday, we went to Ella yesterday. The food was good (some of it great), the service was great, and our server was excellent, but I probably wouldn't go again.  The menu is not huge, and I tried everything I wanted to try.  And for the price we paid, there are better restaurants in the area for that kind of money.

So, we had the Ella cured salmon to start with, and it was quite tasty.  Followed up with the beet salad and heirloom tomato salad, both also tasty (between the two I'd pick the tomato salad).  The server recommended the corn soup, which was fabulous, and later, the green beans, which were the best we ever had.

For our meals, I had two small plates.  The quail (which I didn't care for) and the crispy pork belly, which was pretty good.  My husband had the beef tenderloin, which tasted amazing but was a small portion, especially for the price of almost $40.

For dessert, the peanut butter chocolate one for him, and the carrot cake for me.

One fantastic thing was this: our server was not the one who cleared our plates, but later she came to ask if I had disliked the quail.  I explained what I didn't like about it, and said there was nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't to my liking.  When the bill came, I was told it had been removed because they didn't want us to pay for something we didn't like.  WOW!

With this great review, you may wonder why only 3 stars.  Well, like I said, the menu is limited.  And it is pricey.  If you can afford to eat here, there are  many other restaurants with a bigger selection that you would enjoy.  That being said, I don't think anyone would be disappointed eating here.  There is no reason not to go, but the food wasn't so amazing that I have to go back.  I'm glad I tried it.

Oh, one more tip.  The parking garage across the street is RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE.  They charge by the 1/3 hour.  It cost us $15.75, and we were there for 3 hours.  I'd recommend street parking, or parking at the lot near the Crest, it's got a $5 max.
