Accu Auto Service

I only went in for an oil change, and I love this place already.

Truong is incredibly friendly and the main office is clean and presentable. While it was not busy at the time, my car was already on the blocks getting serviced within five minutes of me sitting down. I also really like how the waiting area has windows and does not feel like a boxed-in prison cell. The kid in me also loves that they have a window into the service area! Something about cars getting lifted into the air gets me excited for some crazy reason.

The window into the service area also reveals how clean and orderly the working area is. While it may have no direct effect on me, it conveys that Accu really values organization and cleanliness. That's a great indicator about the caliber of service you will be getting at Accu. It's a crime that I wasn't having my car serviced here before!

Baja Fish Tacos

Let's kick this off with the positives: Baja Fish Taco's ("BFT") roasted tomatillo and tomato salsas are some of the BEST I've ever had at any Mexican restaurant. One thing that Rubio's, Baja Fresh, and La Salsa have in common is that they fail at making any appetizing salsas (lest we forget that their food is also subpar). Furthermore, the restaurant is spacious and is another cog in the revival of this Trabuco Hills Plaza after the nuclear winter they faced following the cinema closure. I actually struggled to find a parking spot during lunchtime on a Wednesday.

My friend and I opted for the taco and enchilada combo. We both went for the fish tacos, whereas I opted for a shrimp enchilada, and my friend the carne asada. While waiting, their large flatscreen was showing UEFA Champions League Football (soccer), so that was a nice bonus for lunch.

We also got the chips and salsa, and unfortunately discovered that their pico de gallo was not as good as the roasted hot salsas. In fact, the pico de gallo was so devoid of flavor, I think it had "negative flavor" if that is possible. That needs to be remedied and brought up to the standard of the roasted hot salsas.

Now, as for the food... it's a generous portion. One that might warrant paying more than Wahoo's similarly priced combo. At Wahoo's the comparable combo currently costs $5.79, but with shrimp it's $6.49. At BFT, the combo set me back $7.60. Despite a larger portion, the food was just not that great.

The red sauce with the enchilada was pretty good, and I will always enjoy melted cheese. To that end, the shrimp was fresh and cooked well, so I will say the enchiladas are as good as Wahoo's. The rice was okay as well, but I feel that Wahoo's rice has more flavor AND they have brown rice. The beans are where I was really disappointed. The black beans were not appetizing at all, and could only be salvaged by mixing it with the rice and pouring a generous heaping of that heavenly roasted salsa on top. I do hear that the pinto beans are cooked with lard, so maybe I'll give that a chance if I want to destroy my heart.

Also, the fish taco was just devoid of any flavor. Even with lime, it felt like I was eating a tortilla filled with flavorless fish and cabbage. I was very disappointed with the fish taco. Ultimately, I would rather take my money to Wahoo's, where their combo meals are delicious AND cheaper than BFT. The portions are larger at BFT, but the food does not match up.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to continue drinking my roasted tomatillo salsa with a straw.

Gina's Pizza & Pastaria

Paying for Gina's Rasta Salad probably seems like such a waste, especially when I can put together my own mix of tomatoes, lettuce, red onions, garbanzo beans, and rainbow rotini pasta. But their Italian dressing is so damn good!

I actually request Italian and ranch dressing, and mix it together. It might sound odd and possibly gross to mix the two together, but it's actually a match made in heaven. Gina's needs to start selling their salad dressing so I can make unhealthy batches of Rasta Salad at home.

I don't think ordering a whole pizza here is something I would consider, because I do think chains like BJ's and CPK actually make better pizzas at similar price points. That being said, I do like their lunch specials that offer a slice and a side salad (upgraded to a Rasta of course).

Portillo's

None of my closest friends know about the gleam I get in my eye when I eat something delicious and immediately want to order it again. I would describe the look as one of a squirrel who knows food is nearby, and heightens all its senses in an attempt to get the food as quickly as possible.

Portillo's joins the pantheon of restaurants that gives me the longing desire of extending my lunch with another indulgence into that oh-so-special morsel of food. My first foray into Portillo's resulted in me ordering a wet Italian beef sandwich with spicy peppers. I didn't get french fries or anything else because I didn't want to have a huge lunch.

However, after inhaling the beef sandwich, I realized that it would be a crime not to order another beef sandwich while I was there. Unfortunately, we were pressed for time and I had to either be left behind at Portillo's or decide to take my ride. In hindsight, I should have stayed. Another moist and tender beef sandwich, perfectly seasoned thanks to the plunge it took in that savory gravy, would have been worth being stranded in Buena Park. The peppers gave a nice contrast to the generous serving of beef and sent the sandwich to a whole new world of flavor.

On my next visit, I'm prepared to order multiple beef sandwiches, and I already know after finishing four, I will still have the gleam in my eyes as I look at the remnants of my beef sandwich and stare at the line, plotting my course to Italian beef sandwich bliss.

Pedro's Tacos

Ordered the fish taco and the bean and rice burrito (I wish I read the reviews and got bean, cheese, & potato!).

The fish in the taco was battered well, and the flavor was good, but the coleslaw rendered the tortilla a little bit soggy, which was disappointing. However, I do really like that the taco includes diced tomatoes. It was far from the best, and I still do believe that Rubio's fried fish taco gets the edge in my imaginary fish taco war. Also, my fish was oddly rectangular, so it does somewhat resemble a nasty filet-O-fish from McD's, but the fish at Pedro's was crispy and hot rather than soggy and lukewarm.

My bean and rice burrito was actually delicious! It took me five minutes after unwrapping it to handle it without suffering third degree burns, and once I was ready the middle was still hot! The beans were still intact and not mushy, and the rice was plentiful. Although I would say using the sauce is recommended to enhance the flavor. Now I just need to graduate up to the bean, cheese, and potato burrito and carne asada burrito on my subsequent visit.

I was very satisfied with the prices actually, and the water seemed more refreshing since I paid 25 cents for it. However, I do really wish the uncovered tables had some shade, because resting my elbows on the metal table was how I imagine Michael Bluth felt whenever he accidentally touched the Cornballer. "MOTHER OF GOD. EVERY DAMN TIME!"

Woodbridge Movies 5

Seriously the best. It's hard for me to explain, but the 90's feel to this theater is wonderful. There is inherently something beautiful about the cavernous feel to the actual theaters, the lack of stadium seating, and the fact that there are a lot of dark, uninviting browns and blacks throughout the interior.

It's what I remember most about movie theaters when I was young, and I only have to pay $2?! Talk about a blast from the past!

The screen may sometimes have artifacts and smudges, and I actually lament the fact that there are no previews in lieu of advertisements. I actually love movie trailers. Also, the crowd really deserves an "F" rating sometimes. You would think people would express excitement at getting $1-$2 movies, but I've encountered some real chatty individuals from time-to-time. A few of those sideways head turns should do the trick though.

Avoid the hot dogs, show up early on weekends, and revel in good movies without paying ridiculous ticket prices. Woodbridge Dollar Movies FTW.

OC Plaza Dentistry

Plaza Dentistry is the best dentist office I've ever visited, but I am always apprehensive before each appointment I have. Not because of pain, not because of discomfort, but solely for the mere fact that I am always embarrassed by the state of my teeth at every visit. I would compare it to my embarrassment when my grandmother admonishes me for gaining weight. But, just as my grandmother's criticism is always accompanied by a delicious desert, the icing on the cake here is Plaza Dentistry's care and attention-to-detail for each patient.

I believe that dentistry is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and fortunately, coming to Plaza Dentistry is as painless as the dental work itself.

The Dr. Campbells (it would be very easy if there was a "Mr." and "Mrs." in doctor form) are an awesome husband-and-wife tandem in so many ways. Nothing stands out more than having their personalized visits though! Their hygienists are professional, expertly trained, and friendly, but both Dr. Campbells have visited with me and evaluated me even after some of the most routine check-ups.

I've had to get dental work at other dentists before, and it felt so odd not being visited by the doctor whose name was on the office! It might not be established practice, but having had personal visits from both Dr. Campbells, I really feel comfortable at Plaza Dentistry.

Lastly, Plaza Dentistry always seems to have the most state-of-the-art technology. I make biannual visits, and each time there is a new piece of equipment or a new x-ray machine that looks like some futuristic contraption from Minority Report. I like seeing my dentist continually improve itself while maintaining awesome dental standards and making sure I don't let my teeth turn green.

My only wish is that Plaza Dentistry would brush my teeth for me every night!

Pho Ellie

Update - 2/22/2012 2 Check-ins Here
I insisted on bringing my vegetarian friend here because of the glowing reviews of the veggie pho. I was nervous since it was her first experience with pho and I wasn't sure how she would like it.

Our server quelled any fear of a meat-based broth by explaining that the veggie broth was meat-free, backing up other Yelpers claims. We decided to split vegetarian spring-rolls (not on the menu) and we excitedly noticed they had a grilled veggie sandwich. As for the pho, I opted for my tried-and-true #1 Rare Steak and Brisket pho, while my friend went for the veggie.

My pho was great, as usual, but her pho was a pleasant surprise! Lots of veggies, tofu, and copious amounts of noodles! Now, the veggie broth lacked all the delicious flavors of my beef broth, so I will probably never deviate from the #1. My friend did add lime, basil, and some Sriracha to add more flavors to her soup, but remarked that she enjoyed it very much.

The spring-rolls and sandwich were also really good, especially the latter. The sandwich was delicious! Crispy bread, the veggies had a nice little kick, and I loved the sauce and lettuce. My friend couldn't stop talking about the spring rolls and sandwich. Pho Ellie definitely made a great impression on my vegetarian friend!

Pho Ellie is in a remote strip mall. Their menu is small. They only have 7 options for pho... sounds awful, yeah? Too bad it hasn't stopped me from driving 30 minutes  at least bimonthly to indulge in some delicious pho.

My dad is Muslim and loves pho. He wasn't always strictly restrictive to a Halal diet until a few years ago, so he had lots of non-Halal pho experiences until he had to stop for lack of Halal options. He found out about Pho Ellie from me and absolutely loves it. Every trip to Pho Ellie results in us taking multiple orders home to-go... we love this place.

FWIW, I visited this place the first time with my best friend's Vietnamese family to get an authentic assessment and they approved. Good enough for authenticity to me at least, since the best pho I've ever had is at my best friend's house. I always order  the #1 large rare steak and brisket pho and devour the thing. Delicious, clear broth, a nice portion of meat, and endless noodles contribute to a delectable experience!

I love the lemongrass chicken, particularly the rice pilaf that comes with it. I like the beef sandwich a lot too, but I question any description of it as banh mi, especially since the menu doesn't describe it as that. Still, the bread and meat it's served on is delicious.

Spring rolls probably aren't the best value (making them yourself is incredibly practical!), but they are pretty good and I love whatever sauce they serve with it. I lament the fact that their egg rolls aren't served with lettuce, but I prefer the spring rolls anyway. Restaurant is spotlessly clean, service is over-the-top friendly, and their prices are very reasonable. There are no half price promotions and the coupon issue that has been reported is certainly an unfortunate blight.

Nevertheless, I love this pho restaurant and plan on patronizing this one for years to come. They make excellent pho and deserve to thrive for their dedication to service and cleanliness.

Fantastic library!

The facilities speak for themselves. Very clean, lots of study rooms, and plenty of tables. Outlets are in abundance and, unlike other libraries, the friendly staff does a good job of maintaining a quiet atmosphere.

The library is filled with wonderful books, containing everything from graphic novels, fiction, and non-fiction titles. It's an unbeatable resource for checking out books on foreign languages and travel guides for free. Speaking of free things, you can check out a variety of DVD's and CD's for free, and renewing library items is very easy using the library's online system.

Some drawbacks include the busy parking lot and some odd operating hours, especially on Friday. It's also freezing inside (wonderful on a hot day, of course). However, the sheer amount of resources and content available at your fingertips puts the Orange County Public Library system to shame.

Very good milk tea boba! I especially like to get the coconut or chocolate milk tea.

The popcorn chicken is so good, but even the mild one I find pretty spicy. The potato twist is also awesome! It's hard for me to visit this place and not get the potato twist. Excellent snack.

Nice location, although I prefer grabbing a table outside since it's so cramped inside. It's more interesting to look at the ducks anyway, or stare longingly at the people eating sushi at Taiko.
