*4 stars for drinks
*3-4 stars for food... the desserts were all mediocre
*2 stars for service

A large group of us (15-16 ppl) hosted a friend's birthday dinner here, and even though the entire group arrived on time, we weren't seated until at least an hour after our reservation.  Instead of apologizing or offering to comp some portion of our bill, our server defensively snapped: "well it's tough to get 16 seats together..."  No shit.  That's why we made a reservation well in advance, jerk.

I guess there's no need for sugar when 18% gratuity is included.

Toss-up between 3 and 4 stars, but grading up because I really do love the concept!  More details:

Ambiance - 5-stars.  This place has great furnishings, tableware, music, lighting, etc.  On a warm evening they open up the sliding window facade to create an outdoor feel.

Service - 4-stars.  Everyone was laid-back, warm, friendly.  Not bending over backwards, but definitely pleasant.

Wines - 3-4 stars.  I only had two wines here... both were good, but not great.  But they were also non-standard, so I applaud that.

Food - 2-stars.  I think this place could really take off if they worked on the food.  The cheese plate was a bit lackluster for a place that specializes in cheese.  The salad we had was way too vinegar-y and the fruit on it wasn't ripe enough.  And the mac 'n cheese was an injustice... way too dry, and not nearly enough flavor.

But overall I'm a fan and hope to edit this review in the future with an upgrade!

At the risk of being dumped by my bf or snubbed by a mob of incredulous hipsters, I have to admit that I just don't get all the fuss.  Maybe if you love salted caramel ice cream... but I don't.  And I think it's a little too sweet for me (have tried a few flavors).

BiRite serves delicious ice cream, so I would go back if I were in the hood and craving some ice cream.  But I wouldn't go out of my way and wouldn't be caught dead lining up out-the-door-around-the-corner-down-Dolores for it.

One of my favorite places to spend a sunny day... laid-back atmosphere, fresh oysters, drinks... True bay area living.  One suggestion:  Bring your own wine, cheese, crackers, etc.  They allow it... leaves more money for oysters.  :)

I feel awkward giving out 5 stars to Mexican food in North Beach / Telegraph... but I *love* this place.  If you want fresh authentic mexican food with lots of flavor, but you could also use some drinks and ambiance, this place is perfect.  Great margaritas, mouth-watering chips & salsa, and really fresh & tasty tacos.  Not the kind with cheese and lettuce... real tacos.  Lots of other great eats, too... check out the pics.

I've been eating at Diavola for the last few years... ever since I signed up for wine club membership next door at Local's.  The pizza, pasta, salads here are fantastic.  I don't think I've had any other entrees, but I image that everything here is truly a treat.  Very fresh ingredients, perfectly seasoned preparations... and those long, thin complimentary breadsticks they serve make my mouth water.

Diavola also intro'd me to the Calabrian chile... changed my life.

Fraiche

I used to snarl at every new 'tart' yogurt place that popped up... "Got vanilla?  No?  12 dispensers but not ONE non-tart flavor??"  (Throw my arms up for dramatic affect and march out...)  To me, fro-yo is a sub for ice cream, not yogurt parfait.

But I have finally seen the light... Found the land of milk and honey... organic milk, churned into greek-style yogurt, and then generously infused with valrohna chocolate before being transformed into a rich, smooth, pro-biotic frozen cream.  And, if I so desire, topped with the freshest, most flavorful toppings I've ever had... sometimes made of fruits I've never even heard of.

... I won't go as far as saying I enjoy 'tart fro-yo.'  But I sure do love me some Fraiche.

Bun Mee makes my currently favorite cookie - the chocolate with coconut creme (and I discovered it before 7x7 so I'm not biased).  5+ stars for the cookie.

The rest, meh.  High quality ingredients, but less flavorful than, say, Saigon Sandwiches.  I also wish they had a tofu sandwich like Saigon...
But not a bad alternative to real Vietnamese sandwiches, especially for Pac Heights.

Wexler's

I hosted a birthday dinner here on a Saturday night and we had a stellar experience.  The food was incredible, the *drinks* were unique and soooo gooooood (Smoked Manhattan!!), and the service was top-notch.  We went all out and probably ended the night at $80 / person.  I had a 5-star experience here because I was "flexitarian" that night.  But giving 4-stars because as a more-often-than-not vegetarian, I would need a couple more substantive options.

Also, for folks who claim this is not real bbq, you're right.  But they're not trying to be a traditional bbq place... so don't rate them on that basis.
