Archstone South Market
Category: Apartments
Neighborhood: SOMA
My biggest hesitations about Archstone were that the place felt a little too corporate for my taste (as do most of the other big complexes in SOMA), seemed slightly overpriced, and is not rent controlled (I haven't confirmed this, but the complex was built after 1979). The price of the unit I was interested in did eventually drop to what I considered to be reasonable (as mentioned on their website, the rent can change on a daily basis, so monitor closely for a good deal!), but by that time, I had found another apartment in a neighborhood that I liked more.

Also, the woman at the stand tried to sell three pink peonies, two of whose stems were broken, to a customer for $15. Fortunately, the customer knew that she was being ripped off and was able to bargain down to $5.
I will continue to enjoy the colorful sidewalk display of flowers when I go to the Marina to pick up my wines each month, but I think I'll stick to the farmer's market, Whole Foods, and Church Street Flowers for purchases.

Great whiskey selection. I asked the bartender for a scotch recommendation, and she graciously poured me a couple of tastes. I decided on the Bunnahabhain 12, and my friend ordered the Macallan 12. Both (served on the rocks) were $7 each - a good deal! I've made it a resolution to try every scotch at Thieves Tavern.
Bar was quiet, but not dead, on a Tuesday night. I liked being able to hear my friend. My only complaint was their choice of music: cheesy 80s pop (which can be fun sometimes but did not fit the mood).

I returned to Xanath and tried a scoop of the Madagascar Vanilla + Coconut ice cream, which I enjoyed. The texture of the ice cream has definitely improved since my last visit. Xanath has about 4 or 5 different vanilla bean ice creams made with beans from different parts of the world. While I find this concept to be interesting, I would prefer to see more flavors since I'm no vanilla connoisseur and probably can't differentiate between the different types of vanilla anyway . The girls who were scooping on Saturday were very generous with the portions and offered us promotional vanilla beans!
While I would like to up my rating for Xanath because the ice cream has improved since my last visit, I can't justify giving them four stars because my ratings are relative, so 3.5 stars, it is! -

I couldn't resist trying the ice cream at Xanath as I walked past the newly-opened shop after having stuffed myself with South Indian fare at Udupi Palace. Xanath has about 10 different flavors, but none of them struck me as particularly appealing or adventurous. I tasted the saffron ice cream which did not compare with the saffron pista ice cream at Bombay Creamery down the street. I ended up ordering a scoop of the mint chip ice cream, which was a-ok (hence the three stars). Both the saffron and mint chip ice creams were icier than they were creamy, and the flavors were pretty subtle. Perhaps, my experience would have been better had I been less full from dinner (also, it's possible that the lingering Indian spices masked the flavors of the ice cream). In any case, Xanath is brand new, and they probably need some time to work out the kinks. I think this place has potential as they use quality ingredients in their products (organic strauss milk, etc.) I shall return in a month to see if things have changed (also, next time I will order Mexican Vanilla since Xanath is a type of Mexican vanilla, and the namesake is usually a safe bet).
