Fast, cheap, efficient, and tasty.  My introduction to Thai food, with a great selection.  Passable decor - not a place to go for a date, just the source for great-tasting cheap food.  Excellent for takeout!

This place was around for all seven years of my time in Tucson, and its winning formula never changed: good cafe food at low prices, and something for everybody.  Unfortunately it has since closed due to a death in the management - I will miss it dearly.

Two menu items stand out in my memory: the salmon quiche with salad (a lunch favorite) and the tortellini with Italian ham and alfredo sauce (the "Andreas special" after one of my colleagues).  Meals could include a sandwich, slice of quiche, or half of something with a side salad.  The customizable pasta dishes were a big hit too - you could pick your pasta, sauce, and extra ingredients.

Coffee was excellent and well-varied, with a dollar buying you a cup to fill with your choice from 6-8 different brews.

Service varied with the wait staff but was generally pretty good, and the walls were filled with local art.  It was often difficult to get a table due to high demand!

This place was the best in the area by far and outlived many, many competitors.  RIP.

Yet another favorite university hangout - this location changes hands faster than you can blink.  The current incarnation offers tasty gyros and other semi-Mediterranean food.  Watch out for the yummy and plentiful fries that come with just about everything.

Reasonably priced, fast, and mostly healthy - it MUST be popular.

A close second on my list of favorite Mexican food restaurants of all time.  I had the green chili (or was it the red?) and it was spicy and filling.  My margarita was huge and no skimping on tequila occurred.

All that food for a low price - it's no wonder this place is consistently voted one of the best in the Phoenix metro area.

Yum.  Authentic Mexican at its best.  I got taken here by a local shortly after I arrived and I felt like I was back in South Tucson.

The decor is pretty simple but the menu makes up for it with complexity.  You can have a burro of many sizes filled with a slew of meats and topped off with just about whatever you want.  Authentic horchata and Mexican drinks too, and a decent selection of beers.  The burros are LARGE.  Save room in your fridge for the leftovers.

Vino Venue - CLOSED

I visited SF in January 2005, when VinoVenue was featured in Wired News.  I checked it out late on a Friday evening.  Surprisingly it wasn't as packed as I might have imagined.

I came to taste Zinfandels and that's what I did - they had a nice selection of California specimens, and my $10 got me four tastes of a variety of wines with different prices.

At one point I became so saturated with Zin that I tried a favorite pinot noir (Spy Valley, which I can't find here in New Zealand anymore!) to break things up.  I ended up liking the PN much, much more than the Zins.

This place gets top marks from me due to the no-pressure atmosphere (nobody even talked to me!) and the variety of wines available for taste, as well as the very cool geek factor and wine-friendly storage conditions.

I just wish they'd had some dessert wines available to taste too!  C'est la vie.

Another fast and cheap Thai place - but the pad thai just didn't excite me as it should.  Good, fast service and a vast array of condiments - even more than some competitors.

The best pad thai I've ever had.  Saucy enough (so many others are too dry), heavy on the tofu, with just the right flavor.  A huge amount of noodles for the price - $6.80 bought me more than I could ever finish.

The service in this place is FAST.  In, out, full in less than 30 minutes.

Once I went four times in a week.  Always for the pad thai! :)

Mmmm...thinking of this place makes my mouth water.  The yummiest deli sandwiches to be found in Flagstaff, including classic Reubens and French Dips.  The baked goods always look tempting but I've never tried them; it's a great place for lunch or for takeout.
