Elite Event: Yelpbot Odyssey 2010 @ The Urban Hive
Category: Local Flavor
Well, the Yelpbot Odyssey had a random crazy and her dog wander in to get her GROOVE ON. I guess I can't blame her for her human-like inability to resist the smooth robomusic and ambiance on display last night.
Great, well organized party. Thanks Yelp.
I'll tell you right now- leave behind the princess that needs aesthtics, presentation, and a volumous menu to peruse. She'll just end up annoying you for the night (thank me later). If a big ass bowl of Basque beans with chunks of sausage sound good to you, then this is the place.
You get a choice of a few entrees available for the night, you pick one, and then you get BOMBARDED by course after course- soup of the day, salad with a wonderfully tangy vinegarette, aforementioned beans, some of the best French fries ever, chicken Basque with rice, and then finally your chosen entree. It's an s-load of food.
My fam has trusted Louis' to deliver on a special occastions including:
- My lunch with my family here after graduating from UNR.
- My cousin's 21st birthday before a legendary night of debauchery.
-Another cousin's post wedding dinner.
In addition to that, I actually briefly worked here. It was the hardest job I ever had. Try bussing after a party of 18 with a line of people staring you down as they wait to be seated.
I love the bar too. I've been there for drinks more than to eat. Great place for pre-drinking before going out somewhere else. Luis, the bartender, can chat folks up and suggest drinks with the best of them. A couple happy hour priced pecon punches and you are on your way to a VERY happy place.
Alright, you get the idea- I'm a fan. You'll be a fan too if you manage your expectations. Just make sure you come hungry.

Micaela's California Fresh
Category: Specialty Food
If you don't have a abuela, these are the BEST tortillas you are going to get, bar none. These tortillas might as well be homemade- they are thick, fluffy, and comfort food DELICIOUS.
I can count one hand the total of Mexican restaurants and grocery stores Ive been to that produce tortillas of this quality.
Do not sleep on Micaela's.

Pho Anh Duc EastWest Cafe
Categories: Vietnamese, Burgers, Food
Pho Anh Duc EastWest Cafe seems to have the pho-ndamentals down with both friendly service and pho broth with good flavor.
The young smiley girl that works there is super nice, as in you have to stop her from refilling your drink, nice. When she isn't there the service has been good anyway. Sports are usually on the TV and they always as if you want to be seated to view the game which is nice.
The pho broth may look shiny/oily, but taste isn't greasy at all. It's a step up from the chain types and there is always plenty of meat. I usually get the rare steak and beef ball #16. The Thai basil they give you with it is always fresh and pungent. Mmm.....
I don't know about their tacos, burgers, ect ...lol...the pictures posted above the counter look good, BUT I do know if you are in EG you don't need to roll down Stockton to get a decent bowl of pho. =)
I was totally surprised how clean it was and by the presence of a full bar. These aren't expected in a taqueria, actually, this made me suspicious, but the sheer amounts of onions and cilantro seemingly falling from the sky eased my suspicions.
Check this pic: http://www.yelp.com/bi... It's a bad cell pic, but just look at it http://www.yelp.com/bi... ! That's a taco, man. Both asada and carnitas are great with absolutely no skimping on meat.
Whether you want a super taco or a burrito add the tasty chips and fresh tasting salsa and you've got a great meal for fast food prices. Sure you've got to trust your car will be there after you finish your meal, but I say roll the dice.
It's still a cool neighborhood spot with GREAT specials, but no more Big Buck Hunter =( . When answering the eternal question "What is this place missing?" DO NOT answer "hot chicks" in the presence of lady friends. Ooops......

Cool juke box.
Decent beers on tap from PBR to Stella.
Tasty fiery jalepeno appetizers.
No one says sh#$ if your crew does a round of HOT DAMN shots. The bartenders even tolerates your unreasonable (maybe) buzzed (definitely) requests for pickles and cheese with your turkey burger.
And then there is: BIG BUCK HUNTER
All this equates to a cool neighborhood bar.
While the quirkiness of it all makes me thirsty, at the same time I try not to break the seal here. The men's room features a mirror that extends beyond the sink and over the urinal. If you are washing your hands and somewhat tall, there is a good chance you'll get a reflection of junk you don't want to see.
On the positive side of the quirks is the old, western gear rockin' doorman. He is like 70 or so and freakin' rocks.
One last quirk worth mentioning is pricing. The cheap beers are essentially the same price as imports. Don't bother with PBR- you save like fifty cents. LOL!
All and all the combination of quirks, history, and unique personality make it a great spot for a drink at anytime just keep those blinders on if you are a fella using the facilities.

Yelp Elite Event @ Tre: 'Tis the Season of Change
Category: Local Flavor
I really hoped big man would have sang along to "Pony". That would have been awesome.
Long live irresponsible midweek drinking. Thanks Tre, Olivia, and Yelp for a good time. Next time, Yelpers, mix in tipping the bartender. OUT.
The music was OK too. It was like Faces remixes of divebar jukebox songs and cool hip hop.
Normally the staff at spots like this are grumpy and pushy. I understand why- it's the crowd that comes to places like these. Unless they are gay, guys who think dressing up is fun are not to be trusted, ya dig? BUT the staff here was actually quite friendly- both door guys and security.
The crazy thing is I got in with 2 dress code strikes against me. My Christmas sweater ensemble included a (Santa) hat and it wasn't exactly dressy/classy. I don't know why they didn't let you other guys in. I guess you just gotta play it cool and own it.
Dare I say 3.5 stars????

Imma let you finish, BUT Nugget Market is the greatest supermercado of all time.
You can get fine produce, Micaela's tortillas http://www.yelp.com/bi... , lambics, or whatever your foo foo bourgeoisie heart desires as they'll special order items for the next day.
t's been reviewed a million times so I'll keep it short. Great service. Lovely store. Decent prices too. OUT.
