Iguanas

The summary: 3 stars for the burrito and 1 star for the price.

I can see this place get busy for Downtown San Jose activities and San Jose State students coming here for lunch.  The burritos are big for the price.  The taste was not too bad.  You can modify your burrito from the menu.  I did by double rice and no beans.  You see them prepare your burrito in front of you.

The tables fill up fast during peak hours.  Sodas are self serve and, I believe, unlimited refills.

Sushi Tomi

Sushi Tomi's top menu items are their bento boxes and sushi.  They offer a big appetizer list.  The restaurant is small.  Come early or expect to wait during peak times.  The sushi bar is small and cozy with three sushi chefs.  It seems the sushi chefs engage with their customers because I heard them talk.

I ordered the two item dinner combo teriyaki chicken and pork cutlet.  The combo includes soup, salad, and rice.  The portions were huge.  I barley finished my meal.  The chicken had a small charcoal burned taste which I liked.  The pork cutlet was crisp and a little on the dry side.  Overall, the meal was tasty and fast.

I also ordered the pan fried gyoza.  If you want a healthier appetizer, I suggest pan fried gyoza.  It reminded me of my mom making Chinese pot stickers when I was a kid.  Their pan fried gyoza was juicy and full of taste.

My date ordered California Rolls because she wanted to eat light.  Unfortunately, she couldn't finish the sushi because she didn't feel well.

Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve

Update - 4/9/2012
I hiked here for the second time walking on new trails.  There are great views of the Peninsula, neighborhoods in San Carlos, and Interstate 280.  The trails are easy for a family to hike and runners to jog.  If the parking lot is full, feel free to park along Edgewood Drive.  There are many picnic areas and bathrooms.

The residents who live a few miles from the park and preserve are lucky.  Picnic areas and easy hiking trails are a good combination for on-the-fly, last minute recreation.  The hiking trails are easy, and most trails are jogging friendly.  Fantastic views include the San Mateo Peninsula, Interstate 280, and residential homes.

Parking is small.  We were lucky to find a spot during peak hours.

Beef Noodle No 1

Think big, come big, and order big.  Avoid the regular size which is expensive for the price.  Order the big size for $1 more.

The pho broth was tasty and the portions were plentiful.  I ordered the rib eye beef pho and I was satisfied.  The downside was a couple of my friend's sodas were warm.

Shiok Singapore Kitchen

Update - 4/6/2012
My date and I ate at Shiok for the second time.  Much better food.  The garlic was just enough for the duck noodles.  The pepper beef dish was tender and full of flavor.

The downside was the long wait and shorthanded staff.  If you don't mind the long wait for the good food, then I recommend Shiok.

    *3.5 Stars*

Shiok is the first Singapore restaurant I ate.  We ordered the garlic noodles and a chicken dish.  The noodles had too much garlic and a little on the salty side.  The chicken dish was good, tasty, and moist.  The portions were a little skimpy for the prices on the higher side.

The interiors were clean and modern.  The seating was comfortable whether the customer sat on the chair or cushion sofa.  Service was standard.  We got our waters filled regularly.  Waiting for a seat was short.  The small restaurant was busy on a weekday.

I plan to come back and hopefully give Shiok a higher rating.

La Costeña

La Costena is inside a Mexican market.  You enter the store and walk to the back where there is an entrance to buy burritos.  You order your burrito, the worker gives you an order note, and you take your burrito and order note to the cashier inside the market.  Drinks are sold in the market area.  There is a very small seating area outside.  I recommend you order the burritos and eat at home because you're in heaven and relaxed after eating the burrito.

My date and I ordered burritos for the first time.  My order was the grilled chicken with extra Spanish rice, no beans, extra tomatoes, and mild salsa.  Fantastic.  My favorite was the Spanish rice.  Prices were reasonable.

Tomatoes and cheese are extra price.  You can save money avoiding extra tomatoes and added cheese.  You can get tomatoes from the salsa.  Look for the special of the day at the market entrance.

The Red Onion

My dad, uncle, and I ordered burgers at The Red Onion.  We ordered a small size order of fries.  The fries came first.  The order was big for a small size.  We couldn't finish all the fries.  All of our burgers were delicious.  We were satisfied.

The servers don't give you the bill.  The customers walk up to the cashier when they're done eating.  At the cashier, they say their table number for their bill.  They can leave the tip in cash on the table or pay the tip on their debit card up front.

I like the interiors.  The high ceiling, lots of windows for daylight, and openness.

Black Bear Diner

A couple of guys and I ate at Black Bear Diner.  It was the first time for two of us including me.  We enjoyed the interiors.  There are lots of bears.  The children make a comment on the bears to their parents.  The stool area has televisions for the adults, lol.  There is no problem watching sports.

I ordered a breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a biscuit.  My complement was the biscuit.  It was huge.  The bacon was thick as stated in the menu.  The hash browns were too greasy.  My order was decent overall and portions were good.  The guys enjoyed their meals.

The diner quality food is three stars.  I ate better food at comparable diners.  However, Black Bear is good for families because of the bears.  There is a tiny playground next to the cashier.  I believe sodas have no refills.  Prices are okay--not too expensive.  Customers bring their bill to the cashier to pay.

My date and I ordered the won ton soup and broccoli beef.  These two are standard Chinese dishes.  There shouldn't be any problems.

There were problems.  The won ton soup tasted spoiled.  I got food poisoning and my date got a stomach ache.  A couple of broccoli pieces had sand.  I ordered a side bowl of rice.  The rice was lukewarm.

We're not coming back.

I ate here for the first time with four of my friends.  It was the first time I ate BBQ on a charcoal grill.  Great food.  Highly recommended.  Prices are reasonable.

The different variety of side orders are the most we ever received in a Korean BBQ.  The side orders keep coming and coming.  Ask the waitress and you receive more side orders.  We had no free space on our table.
