Lassi - CLOSED

If you've ever been to a restauarant, and been to the restroom, and to get to the restroom you had to walk through like a really small hallway that passes the kitchen, and has one of those postcard racks on the walls, then you've walked down a hallway that is bigger than this whole restauarant.  Lassi is absolutely miniscule, which I adore, because it means their rent is so low that they can feed me a stunning gourmet Indian lunch for the kind of money that I'd more readily associate with the price of a magazine, or maybe the cost of a subway ride.  I heartily vouch for the daikon Parantha, a warm, wheaty crepe packed with delicate, spicy radish ($3.95).  For a "splurge," try the pumpkin and black lentil dal ($4.95).

Weekday lunch is the best time-- if you are playing hooky from work and in the mood to see the face of god, stop into Tartine for a pear & roquefort tart.  Don't expect service with a smile, or ample elbow room, but do expect to discover the perfect place to linger with a charming companion.

Golden Swan Garden

The Golden Swan Garden is a sad, scrungy little patch of land with a few trees, a little bit of garbage, and a lot of tall iron fencing.  However, it is amazing, because it is the site where the the bar used to stand that was Eugene O'Neill's inspiration for "The Iceman Cometh."  Even if the garden today is anything but pleasant, it is hard not to feel inspired by a visit here.  It helps you think about time, and change, and art, and the crisis of trying to find meaning in the face of ugliness and modernity and urbanization, and. . . yeah.  Give it a nod if you find yourself passing by.

Dirty as heck.  Some pretty great breakfast deals, and a wonderfully terrible atmosphere.  The old skool booths make you want to stay for hours, which is good because it'll take that long to get your waiter's attention.  Luckily, you won't care.

Washington Square Diner

I love me a real bad/good diner, but the Washington Square is just not that great.  When I went, the service was pretty terrible and the prices were surprisingly steep when compared to the other diner-type spots that line 6th avenue.  In general, between the not-particularly-cozy atmosphere and the stingy once-in-a-blue-moon coffee refills, the place seems designed to not make you want to hang out, which seems to be to be the antithesis of what a real bad/good diner should be like.  The free delivery is a nice touch, though, and the fact that it is open 24 hours is a big plus.

Tri-Rite Deli

The Tri-Rite is really not that special, but I can't tell you how grateful I am for its existence.  There are a handful of convenience stores around here, but none of them have quite as much Old E. for quite so cheap, and none of them have such a surprisingly impressive selection of Soy Delicious vegan ice cream.  If I actually added up how much money I've spent at the Tri-Rite I might be sad, but when I think about how much happiness the Tri-Rite has brought me, it all balances out.

The puppies that frolic and snooze in the window of Le Petit Puppy are so cute that looking at them is almost painful.  If cuteness were liquor, looking at these puppies would be the equivalent of doing a doubleshot of tequila.  If cuteness were drugs, looking at these puppies would be the equivalent of huffing a big hit of crack cocaine.  In short, the cuteness level here is so extreme that it actually rates as hardcore.  Definitely worth a gawk if you are in the neighborhood.

If you enjoy sniffing, you're going to flip out at McNulty's.  I always considered myself more of a toucher or a taster than a sniffer, but I had no idea what I was missing.  The old skool specialty store atmosphere is very charming, and the selection will win you over.  Not rock bottom prices, of course, but since McNulty's isn't very much like the rock bottom of anything you won't mind too much.

Whew!  I was afraid that Kim's had left the West Village for good after their larger branch a few blocks away from here closed.  Lucky for everyone in the neighborhood, Kim's is alive and well here, with a smaller but still impressive selection.

*********UPDATE**************

BOXERS IS DUNZO.

Now there's some bar and grill in the space that looks exactly the same as boxers used to.

*******************************

archival review:
Spacious and fairly clean with a friendly bartender and a generally warm atmosphere, Boxers is one of the less horrible bars in this area.   The food is overpriced and skimpy, so head elsewhere for your dinner, but stopping here before your evening meal for the sweet 2-for-1 happy hour in the early evening is a pretty good idea.
