We rented a house across the street from Nick's and we are so happy to have been so close to this convenience store. Prices were great and the selection was wide.

Since they don't take reservations, I was a bit worried about getting a table but 9pm on a Tuesday night was perfect timing to grab a table for 5.

Staff was delightful and even offered eye glasses to someone at our table who couldn't read the menu.

The food was amazing. For starters we had a sampling of oysters, an artichoke & dungeness crab salad, and a plate of bread kept on coming out of the kitchen.

Meals that were ordered were clam chowder, mussel stew, trout, and the pasta dinner.

I got a dinner salad with shrimp that was simply okay but I have to kick myself for getting that because the trout (and everything else) was far superior.

Definitely heading back to Anchor Oyster Bar next time I'm in town.

I'm an out-of-towner and didn't expect much from a restaurant attached to a mall but I was happy that I walked into Straits.

Service was great. It was later in the evening of Halloween night so wait staff was dressed up which made things even funner.

We order the calamari appetizer and it was deliciously breaded and the aoli dipping sauce was mmm, mmm good.

My dining mate had the butter chicken which was a whole piece of chicken and it was so moist and delicious.

I had the tamarind beef (medium-rare) and it came as cubes -- seared on the outside and pink on the inside. Very good.

Cocktails were also very good. Would visit again.

Vicky's Fish & Chips

In my heart, I was hoping that Vicky's Fish & Chips would be like one of those hole-in-the-walls that surprises you with excellent food much like Salad King pre-renovations. Sadly, it's just a hole-in-the-wall.

I ordered a Tom Yum soup as a starter -- it was overpoweringly sour. The broth tasted a lot like something that would come out of a jar so I don't know if it's made in-house or not. And, this is me being picky, but the mushrooms were cut into halves versus thinly sliced as they traditionally should be cut.

I had a taste of the Hot & Sour soup and that was also overpoweringly sour and much too sweet for this type of soup. Wasn't very hot either.

For a main, I got the Clear Noodles w/ Beef. Couldn't finish eating it because it was so bland... salt was the predominate flavour.

They seem to use fresh vegetables in their dishes so I don't understand why their sauces are so terrible. Staff is very nice so I guess I understand the steady trickle of people coming in for take out but I wonder if I'm missing something here...

Update - 9/19/2010 6 Check-ins Here
Went here for brunch today (the other times I've been there have been for dinner) and felt that the portions would appropriately sized but, considering that it was 1:30pm, it was not the freshes brunch meal around.

I had the classic breakfast for $9.  The potatoes were made in the style of rosti (which I normally love because they get extra crispy) but they tasted of old oil.  And the coffee was def. not up to snuff for the coffee-snob I am.  In fact, since I have been recently travelling, the coffee tasted exactly like the coffee hotels give you for the in-room coffee machine.

The sausage I got was excellent though -- not your typical tiny breakfast sausage but something you would want to put into a hotdog bun. Very flavourful too. The eggs were good too.

Their brunch menu is small but in a pinch I would go back -- just earlier in the day. (And I would get coffee elsewhere afterwards.) Or I would stick to them for dinner.

My bf and I got there about an hour before a band was to set up on a Friday night -- which was good timing because it was easy to get a table and we could hear each other talk. By the time we left, it was very loud with every table was taken up and it was hard to get the attention of the busy wait staff.

The menu is great... I had a tough time deciding on what to get but ended up getting Fish & Chips.  The haddock tasted fresh and the batter -- mmm, mmm, that batter -- was really good.  Fries were a bit too greasy for my liking but they were ok.

I had a taste of the veggie burger patty and it was a very good patty (it was a black bean & tofu combo). And (as I mentioned in my check-in tip) if you like hot sauce, they have a very good homemade hot sauce.

Also, instead of getting the curry poutine (considering that both our dishes came with fries), we got a side of curry for dipping. It was tasty but also seemed a lot like the curries we make at home with that Patak's sauce we buy from the grocery store. So good curry but not mindblowing.

    Looking forward to returning soon.

The food at this place is drool-worthy and service is top-notch.

Calamari was freshly battered and delicious. And the server gave our table complimentary nachos and 3 kinds of mole for sampling so I barely had room for my main course after eating all of that.

But I did get around to eating half of my chicken mole in banana leaves -- yum. Had a taste of cracked pork too and it was also good.

I'll miss this restaurant since I am only in San Jose this week!

Had a Saag Pander but it was too salty for my tastebuds. The a la carte prices are pretty good, and I liked the portion size.

Littlefish

I've been to Littlefish twice so far.  The first time I got a 2 eggs with sausage combo, and the 2nd time I got the eggs benny.

The food here tastes healthy and fresh.  The hollandaise sauce on the benny had a nice lemony taste to it and it's a welcome change considering some place's poached eggs taste like vinegar.

Portions are big, imho, and both times I had items on the plate that I couldn't finish.

Prices could be a couple of dollars lower (It's $14 for a two-egg, peameal bacon benny and homefries) but considering that it's in a more low traffic area, it seems reasonable for a neighbourhood that's slowly but surely gentrifying.

Wait staff is super friendly! No complaints there.

Would def. return whenever I feel like heading into the Junction.

Homebake Pizza Company - CLOSED

They have great, thinly rolled dough and fresh toppings but it's pricey for having to go home and bake it yourself.

If you're looking for fresh baked pizza, I think next time I would order a basic pizza with sauce and cheese, then just drop by the grocery store for the rest of the topping.

Or, if you've got extra coin, maybe splurge for their premium toppings like caramelized onion (yes, it was delicious!) because that's obviously harder to get last minute.

I do have a beef with their cooking instructions though. The pizza comes on cardboard and baking parchment.  The instructions tell you to slide the pizza with parchment (no cardboard) directly onto the oven rack.

The dough, however, is so thin and floppy that we found it drooping between the rails of the oven rack. Cheese was falling everywhere! Plus the parchment had a hard time just sliding off the cardboard.

In the end, we just stuck the pizza and parchment onto a baking tray and it turned out fine.
