Tramonto

At first, I didn't realize there was a gem inside the River Rock Casino. I guess I came across it last night while attending a friend's birthday dinner.

I was a little worried at first, because I thought this place would be very hard to find. But, it is literally right above the River Rock Theater (need to take that cool-looking, curvy escalator to the top).

Okay, let's get straight to the point. The service here is brilliant. I couldn't have been greeted any better, and everything from being seated 'til dessert, was absolutely fantastic.

Food: This is a place for fine-dining, and the food was ever-so-fine. The presentation was beautiful, and the taste definitely left an impression. My compliments to the chef for their skills and creativity. I had the chicken, which tasted amazing.

Ambiance: This would be a perfect place for a dinner date. The view is great except that the ocean is somewhat blocked by some industrial buildings when you look out in one particular direction. That was the only downer. If this restaurant was another 10 stories higher, then it would be absolutely gorgeous. Overall, the inside was very clean, roomy, and powerfully awesome. Oh, by the way....The bathroom was oh-my-goodness yum. I was very tempted to steal some of their towels in the washroom. Yes, I admit to it. Going to Tramonto made me want to steal things.

Value: Once again, this is a fine-dining type of place. If you really are eating dinner (not taking a look at the menu and then your wallet and then deciding to just have soup), it will be $30+. A friend of mine had a dish that was $50+. You will be full at the end, nonetheless. The value is what it is. It's a fine-dining experience. Expensive, but good to visit on special occasions.

Service: This is like the Denny's of fine-dining (LOL please don't be mad at meeeee). What I mean is that, the service here is ACE. As one of the waiters explained that night, they have been properly trained. They know to serve from the right, take from the left, and all those other amazing fine-dining etiquette. They make an effort to strike up conversation, and the way they delivered the cake in the end was superb. I give the service here 31289472 thumbs up.

Verdict: A solid 10 stars from me (this site only allows 5, what a rip). If you haven't tried this place before, go taste it for yourself. And you know what's the best part about this place? Well, let me tell you....

You can go downstairs after paying for your dinner and win it all back! =P

Cheers~

Upon arrival, I noticed that this place probably needs another parking lot, because I had to end up sharing a parking space with my friend who drove a scooter that night. If it wasn't for him, I probably would have had to spend about 30 minutes waiting for a spot (along with like 3 other cars that were parked there, clogging up the lanes).

So you get the gist of it. The parking is just horrendously bad. Terri-bad.

Anyways, let's get started...

Food: So far, I've had the curry, the signature noodle soup, some spaghetti, and chicken wings. Interestingly, they claim to not use any MSG in their soup. I am not sensitive enough to MSG, so I'd need some professional detector to verify this for me. Taste-wise, I think this place is pretty decent.

The curry definitely has a "zing" to it. It does contain a considerable amount of coconut milk, so some people may not like it as much. But... personally, I felt that it was awesome.

Ambiance: I think this is a cozy little restaurant, and the booth we had was fairly comfortable. The interior was nice and clean, and the colors were quite vibrant and lively. I like it.

Value: Compared to other HK-style cafes, this is definitely a bit more expensive. This place also serves bubble tea, and it's not terrible. $15 dollars should be plenty enough to settle the bill.

Service: Terrible. Been there 3 times, and the waitresses are all very well-trained at avoiding eye contact, even if they are in front of your face. They storm around the place, left and right, but most of the times they really aren't doing anything in particular. They are very good at making themselves look busy. I guess that takes some skills.

On the most recent visit, I actually had to get up and grab a waitress (only to interrupt her conversation with another) to let her know that we were ready to order. Also, they screwed up some orders as well. Once again, had to get up to grab the bill. Not impressed.

Final Verdict: Worth going? That depends if you can tolerate a few things...
1. Waitresses that avoid you and possibly screw up orders?
2. The terribly bad parking lot that needs to be upgraded to 3x the size?

Now... if only the service was better... then it would receive my unconditional love....

Otherwise, the food here is pretty decent.

Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House

I have heard a lot of hype about this place. Some people even go as far as saying this is THE BEST beef noodle in Vancouver. Even more so, they claim that the beef noodle here resembles the kind you find back in Taiwan. Now, i am from Taiwan, and I know a good bowl of beef noodle when I taste one.

None of the compliments above were justified whatsoever, at least when I went there on two occasions....

Let's start with the good stuff first....

Ambiance: I actually, for some reason, kind of like the interior decor of this place. Compared to other beef noodle houses, this place is roomy and more on the comfy side. Unfortunately, this is the only part that "wins" in my book.

Food: The soup is the most important factor when it comes down to beef noodle. Yet, it is bland and has almost no taste.... The appetizers are alright, but nothing overly special. The portion is good, however. You will surely leave this place with a full stomach.

Value: The beverages are outrageously expensive. Among the other beef noodle houses, this one is slightly more costly overall.

Service: How hard is it to get an order right?

"Hi, I would like a bowl of beef noodle, large please"

And somehow, the order came out wrong.
But hey, at least the guy who was waiting the tables has a nice haircut....?

They should go to Denny's and see what real service is!

But all jokes aside, I wouldn't go back here for the overcooked beef and tendon, and I certainly won't miss the noodle or the soup.

Verdict: If you crave for beef noodle and want to go to a place that tastes better and costs less, go to the Crystal Mall food court... and I am serious.

Denny's

It has been almost 7 months since I last wrote a review. So for those of you who care (most likely none), I have just been very lazy. But now I am returning to it, so be prepared for some outrageous reviews!

SO.... my first "comeback" review would be on dear Denny's, specifically the one that is located on Scott road and 84th of North Delta.

And let's move on it~

Location: It's actually fairly convenient, as it has ample parking. It's relatively easy to find. And the BEST part, is that there's a medical clinic right beside it, in the same complex.

You know one of those "feelings" you get when you visit a doctor, and you would think to yourself... "Oh man, let's get this test over with... bear all the bad news... and then EAT SOME GOOD FOOD TO MAKE ME FEEL GOOD YA~~!!!"

Well, if you are that kinda person (like many of us out there), then you will totally, absolutely, LOVE this specific Denny's next door. I am only scratching the surface on its goodness. Yep, that's right.

Value: Let's put it this way. It's Denny's. The prices aren't gonna be over the edge expensive. This is definitely one of those places you can go to on a regular basis (if you love it that much). And this place actually does make you want to tip the staff. I'd say roughly $15 dollars for a good meal. And did I mention, the drinks are refillable? Moving on~

Food: I find that different branches of Denny's vary quite a bit. To be completely honest, I really enjoy the food at this particular Denny's. I've had sandwiches, burgers, steaks, etc, and the quality is decent. It would be a very nice place to bring your kids to as well.

Service: This is where it wins, over all other Denny's and possibly all other restaurants I've been to. Instead of telling you how great it is, I will just tell you a story. A true story.

One time I had to meet up with a friend there in the evening to study. It was one of those cram-sessions (woohoo~)
And the moment I got in, the waitress asked if I wanted anything. Five minutes later, she came and asked me, "are you sure? We could definitely serve you something warm~". After another 10 minutes or so, she came and asked again.

It felt like she really cared. And I think she really did. Where do you find waiters/waitresses like that? Denny's.

Come grab a bite if you are craving Denny's and aren't too far away from North Delta.

Back to work~
Cheers!

Ebi-Ten

I personally feel that, when I am reviewing different restaurants, I have to take into consideration their mission statement. I feel that Ebi-Ten does what it aims to do: Japanese fast-food.

But don't let the phrase, "Japanese fast-food" fool you. They serve it hot and fresh, and it tastes even better than most sit-in Japanese restaurants.

A couple days back, I dropped by this place upon recommendation from a friend. He had said, "yo, check out this place. The food is fast, good, and it isn't too expensive." Well hey, that's incentive enough for me to pay a visit!

Ambiance: Man, is this place busy or what? Dinner hours had just begun, and they are already lined up out the door. Needless to say, there were no seats available inside. Treat this place as a take-out joint, because honestly, the ambiance almost discourages you to stay too long. However, I think it serves its purpose.

Service: The people taking the orders were smiling and friendly. That's all I would ever expect from this place. I'm very satisfied!

Value: These are the cheapest Japanese food that I have found, up to date. If you are looking for a deal, then this is where it's at. For a nice meal plus a pop or a large bowl of miso soup, you are charged ~8 dollars. That works for me!

Food: The dish my friends and I had were quite good. The chicken teriyaki combo and the beef teriyaki combo were both very tasty. It's almost surprising that the meals here taste better than a lot of the Japanese restaurants around. Did I mention that these guys are fast? 3-4 minutes per order, roughly. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

Verdict: Filling up that big empty void in my stomach would require more than just a few slices of sushi, and that would probably empty out my paycheck fairly quickly if I was to eat elsewhere. So I propose two possible solutions:

1. I can try and make more money... somehow...
2. I can go to Ebi-Ten

I think the choice is obvious.
I need to make more money.

But seriously, Ebi-Ten is definitely worth your visit. If you want to eat Japanese food regularly? Right here. If you aren't a huge fan of Japanese food? Still, this would be a good recommendation regardless.

Ebi-Ten will definitely get my business again in the future.

Apollonia Greek Restaurant

I am personally quite a fan of Greek food, and I have to admit, all the great reviews I have read about this place really motivated me to come check it out. Even on an evening of pouring rain, I had faith that this would turn it all around.

First impression: When I first arrived at the restaurant, I was a little surprised by its location. Although not hidden by any means, it still looked a little bit out of place. It's all roadside parking here, I believe, so that made me go, "awww" a little when I arrived. The big blue lights that spell out, "Apollonia", were quite mesmerizing, and almost hypnotic. I was also a little worried at first, because I called twice earlier that day to make reservations, but nobody bothered to pick up the phone.

However...

Ambiance: When I entered, I thought to myself, "wow... this is really nice!" The interior decor was great, and the atmosphere made me feel like I was a little bit more awesome than usual. Very well-furnished, and it was also very nice and quiet.

Services: Excellent. The waitress was polite, attentive, and very pleasant. We truly felt like welcomed guests!

Value: I was impressed by their menu; I thought it looked nice and clean, easy to read. The prices are comparable to the other Greek restaurants that I've been to, and it's fair.

Food: This was the real winner. At the table, we had a debate of whether it was supposed to be Calamari or Kalamari. But regardless of how it's actually spelled, it tasted awesome! The roasted lamb was "oh my goodness, yea!!!!", and the roasted chicken was two-and-a-quarter thumbs up. Portion-wise, it was quite filling.

Verdict: I am a fan of this place. I will go back when I feel like Greek food again. This place will definitely leave an impression.

Overall, great place to visit if you are any of the following:
1. Greek food lover
2. Feeling like eating at  a nice restaurant.
3. Greek food lover who feels like eating at a nice restaurant.

You know how they always give you these mint candies after you get the bill? Well, these taste a little syrup-y and funky. lol

Just go and check out this place if you haven't. You won't be disappointed! And if by any chance you are not satisfied, then I will sing you a beautiful, awesome song.

Cheers

Suga Sushi Japanese Restaurant Ltd

I'm sure this is old news, but they have changed owners as well as their menu. Now, they offer both Japanese and Korean cuisine. I admit that was an exciting change, and I had looked forward to trying it.

Before changing owners, I used to eat there quite often. Now, things are a little bit different...

Let's start with the good stuff.

The ambiance, for those of you who haven't been there, is very nice and gives off an authentic Japanese restaurant feel. The interior design, along with the pictures on the wall, add to the authenticity as well. I like how it's very cozy. It's especially nice to eat there on a rainy evening, sitting by the windows and staring out into pitch-black nothingness. Quite a nice feeling~

The service is decent. After being there several times, under the new ownership, I can say that there hasn't been any forgotten orders, as compared to before. So that is a good sign. The waiters/waitresses were responsive, and the orders arrived fairly quickly. They did make an effort to come and refill the hot tea, so that's another plus.

Now here's the not-so-good part.

While their menu size increased, their portion size decreased. The udon (one of my favorites) seemed to have shrunk a little. It wasn't as "rich" as before. Albeit not too thrilled about it, it was still acceptable. I haven't had the sushi since they changed ownership, so I can't comment on that.

On the next two visits, I ordered their Korean cuisine. That was, unfortunately, a little bit disappointing. The side dishes arrived, and I was slightly confused at first. Most of the Korean dishes on the menu offered side dishes. However, we ordered 3 meals, with only one small plate of sides to accompany.  On top of that, the selection of the side dishes was minimal, and the potatoes were not cooked thoroughly. Now the main courses. The spicy beef soup wasn't anywhere near impressive or authentic, but the Japchae dish was alright. Overall, not Korean cuisine at its finest.

The price is a bit high, considering the amount of food you are paying for. The bill comes out to about $11-$15 per person, usually. Unless... you order one of those more expensive combos, which can be as expensive as around $18-$20.

Verdict: I think this place offers a nice atmosphere. Overall, food-wise, the Japanese menu seems to be a better choice, as I wouldn't recommend the Korean food here. Suga is only an option if you are close by, living on campus, etc. Can't say I love this place. I've had better.
