Pappasito's Cantina

Category: Tex-Mex

2 star rating

Methinks not is right. My family decided we were coming here because my grandparents were in town. After reading some of the reviews, I was open minded to giving it a shot. I mean, chains become chains for a reason right? Wrong.

Charge #1: No parking.
Dismissal: I can walk just fine.

Charge #2: 45 minute wait
Dismissal: I'm willing to wait that long for other restaurants.

Charge #3: Slooow service.
Dismissal: At least they were friendly

Charge #4: Food is not good.
Dismissal: Not so much...

The queso is reminiscent of velveeta, the beans taste like they're out of a can, and the baja fish tacos were really boring. Although I will give one extra star for the made-to-order guacamole.

House Pizzeria

Oh man. Oh man...

I've been wanting to try House Pizzeria for a while, mostly because I stumbled upon the menu and saw the words "potato" and "goat cheese" next to each other and assumed it was fate. I'm a sucker for goat cheese. And let me tell you, if ever I was going to pick a pizza to make sweet sweet love to, this would be the one. The crust is soft and super thin, with the perfect chewiness. The goat cheese and rosemary combine creating a tingling delightful scent. The potatoes are moist and flavorful. My mouth is watering...
As if this wasn't enough, I decided I better get a pizza to take home, so I went with the pepperoni as I was told it does well cold. And it did.
So when you next feel the need for a pizza that makes you gush with delight, I'd say you would be satisfied with House. Although, it is quite small so you might have to wait because I will be ahead of you in line.
Also you pay for your pizza at one counter and drinks at another counter. Wtf: House Pizzeria? Let's simplify this...

So I'm not too big into arcades, so when some guys and I ended up here, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. My boyfriend decided we were going to play Street Fighter, and after I beat him 4 rounds in a row with some intense button mashing (yes!), my excitement for more video games surged. Next up was skee ball, which you don't have to pay for. Luckily, the place was a bit empty, making me feel justified in jeopardizing one of the two skee ball lanes. Caution though, once you start playing you will not be able to stop. Needless to say it ended up being an enjoyable experience. Although, I can't really comment on the alcohol prices, as the drinks were purchased for me by others.

Piranha Killer Sushi

I've been wanting to try Piranha Killer Sushi for a while now. Conveniently, after planning to happy hour here with the boyfriend, Jeremiah W, and Beauregardless, we were informed that Beauregardless' mother would be joining us, which was delightful.
The happy hour is a pretty good deal. Most appetizers and rolls are around 1/2 off (anywhere from $6-9ish). The selection is limited however. There are three rolls offered, two of which have cream cheese and most of the group agreed that cream cheese doesn't belong on sushi (I kindly disagree). There is a larger variety of appetizers offered, and they are all really delicious. The salmon ceviche was one of my favorites.
The drinks are a decent price as well, the house wine (red or white) is $4 dollars a glass. Beers were either $2 or $4 dollars.
It wasn't too crowded, and I also liked that there wasn't loud music playing, making it an optimal place to go to enjoy some good company, which was really the highlight of this particular happy hour excursion.

Mecca Gym and Spa

Everyone knows a massage is one of the many ways to a woman's heart. So for Valentines Day, my dad decided to give my mom and I gift certificates for a massage. These massages are blissful. They do a sensational job of making you feel so luxuriously pampered. Having never had a massage before, I wasn't really sure about the logistics: I mean, how naked do I get? They definitely make you feel at ease, and I couldn't have been more comfortable. I also appreciate that before the massage they ask you if you have any trouble areas you would like them to work on, and how hard you want them to work into the muscles.
They also have a sauna and fully stocked showers, so be sure and give yourself some extra time for all that. I just wish I had known that before hand...

Dear Central Market,

I had a really great time yesterday. Thanks for giving me such fresh produce at decent prices. Your strawberries taste delicious in Greek yogurt with some chocolate syrup on top. I can't help but think about you and smile. I hope we can make this a regular thing.

Love, Betty.

H-E-B Grocery Store

Seriously, this is the best H-E-B. Living downtown, whole foods is maybe two miles away. Don't be fooled, I love whole foods, but it's expensive, and chances are when I'm going to the grocery store I want some goldfish and coke zero. Whole foods just doesn't cut it. I would rather drive all of like 10 miles or something to go to this H-E-B than go grocery shopping anywhere else. It's that nice. Plus there's always sushi samples. The sushi is good! The cheese selection is really good and they also have awesome cheese balls! I know it sounds creepy and disgusting, but they are delicious.

Robertson Hill Apartments

Category: Apartments
Neighborhood: East Austin

4 star rating

Robertson Hill overall is a pretty sweet apartment complex. When we moved in they had some awesome deals going on, including 3 months free rent. Awesome. It's super central and close to everything, and we have since discovered plenty of east side charm. The apartments themselves are well-appointed and spacious, although you can see some of the cheapo shortcuts they took. The sheet rock is thin and flimsy so it's hard to hang stuff up. The sound insulation is pretty good between apartment walls, but I don't think they considered insulating the ceilings, so we can hear our upstairs neighbors doing things they probably wouldn't want us to hear...
Our apartment is on the first floor, and somewhat underground, so our view sucks, but we haven't had to turn the heater on yet, which is awesome.
There's plenty of community gatherings, often including free food, the only problem is you have to go into the lobby and read the board to find out when that stuff is..
The gym is nice, never very many people there so you rarely have to wait for a machine.
Overall, if you're considering moving here, I'd say you'll probably be happy if you do.

Imperia

Let's set the scene:

It's a cold Friday night and you're hungry. You want sushi, so you go to Imperia. It's about 7:45 and when you walk in, half the tables are empty! In your non-pretentious nature, you take this to be good because you don't have to wait, not that it means nobody wants to go because it's not very good... And in this assumption, you would be correct!

The ambiance is dark and romantic-esque, the servers are friendly and helpful, and the sushi is damn good.

Come on people, do you want sushi? Get off yelp, and go to Imperia. Seriously.
