Saturn Cafe

I do enjoy the food at Saturn Cafe but there are definitely hits and misses. The one in Santa Cruz has better service than this place. I went to Saturn a few days ago with a small group of people. I ordered the Buck Rogers with skinny fries and a side of the fake bacon (don't like them when they are in the sandwich cuz it gets soft and spongy)

The burger was awesome and being that I am a die hard meat lover, it really didn't even make me miss meat. it was that good. The chipotle sauce is not too spicy and makes for a great dipping sauce for your fries too. My fake bacon never came and our server didn't come by our table to check on drinks until we were all done eating. I had asked another server about the bacon and she said she would make sure it came but I guess she forgot. I ain't hating on this place and everyone forgets but I think maybe they get overwhelmed a little easily?

In either case he apologized and took it off the check and probably helped save me a few calories. I have a lot of vegetarian/vegan friends and this is a place that we can always agree on so it's a thumbs up in my book.

Domo

I originally had plans to go to Sobu, but after reading some reviews on Yelp which mentioned Domo, I decided to check this place out instead. The place is very small, but you don't feel cramped. We got there at 7 on a weeknight and there was already a waitlist, but the server came out while we were waiting outside and offered to take a drink order which made the wait go by a little bit faster. We ended up being seated at the bar, and I swear that the sushi chef has got to be the fastest, most efficient chef I have ever seen. He never even broke a sweat and the food came out quickly which was great because we were starving! The staff was super friendly, and I really liked the lighting there which was not too bright.

We order the firecracker balls, which were tasty, but I really enjoyed the nigiri sushi. Everything we ordered tasted really fresh.  The entire dining experience was very pleasant and cozy. I am looking forward to coming back here.

Omega Restaurant

My family lives down the street from Omega and I have been there a couple of times for the breakfast. I think that it's a solid family owned restaurant and the food is consistent...but I'm really here to write about the bar that is to the right of the entrance and attached to the restaurant.

I bet you guys didn't even know there was a bar there right? I didn't either until my good friend told me about it. We were looking for a quiet place to have drinks that was close and he suggested it. I figured it was probably going to be a pretty depressing scene and sure enough it was. However, despite the lack of people there, the ones who hang out there are regulars and are pretty hilarious. One of them insisted we come back for Karaoke night on Saturdays. Obviously I knew I had to check that out and when I came home last weekend, we ended up going back to Omega bar for Karaoke. We showed up at 9 and there were only about 8 people there. Once again, a pretty depressing scene...but everyone was so friendly and drunk and fun that we ended up having a blast! I brought the house down with my rendition of Clarence Carter's "Strokin" and everyone was dancing. While the small crowd tends to sing more country songs, they were pretty down with whatever. I would definitely go back.

Noc Noc

Neighborhood: Lower Haight

Being a resident of the lower haight area, I certainly don't have a shortage of bars to choose from. For some reason, I always end up finding myself at Noc Noc even though I can't say that it's my favorite bar in the neighborhood.  There are some advantages this has over the others though. For one, it's usually the least packed of all the bars so that is always a plus if you are on a date or want to actually sit down when you're drinking. Secondly the staff is usually friendly. It's also dark in here which I like and lastly, the decor is anything but boring. It's like you walked into a Tim Burton movie set.

Now for the bad and reasons why I think this bar could be so much better. The music here is almost always terrible. It's usually some kind of world beat or electronica...If you're into burning man then I guess this would be your kinda place. But it's not even the type of music they play that bothers me as much as it is the VOLUME. The place could be empty but they will always have the music blasting at the highest volume possible. I really dislike this about the bar. I think there is no reason for the music to be that loud. And the creepy DJ area is weird too. You can't see the DJ's and it would almost seem like they should just have a ipod hookup somewhere.

All that being said, I still think it's better than some of the other options in the neighborhood.

I used to live just a half block away from Transfer Market and even though I had corner store right next to me...I still went to Transfer and why??? because the selection of everything was better, and Rami is freakin amazing. You could feel like total crap and he'd make you smile within 30 seconds.  If you live in the hood, I know there are 18293729473 liquor stores, but this one is the place to go to. These guys are always looking out for the neighborhood folks.

Pretty Penny

I first heard about this store from a stylist I did a fashion shoot with. I was the makeup artist on the shoot and everyone was swooning over all the clothes that she brought. She told us that it was from Pretty Penny in Oakland and since then, I've been dying to check out the store. So to my pleasant surprise, I found out that a friend who recently moved to Oakland and wanted me to visit her lived just blocks away! I went to visit her one day and knew this was a must stop place for me. The store is bright, and uncluttered as most vintage stores tend to feel. They have great pieces, and you can tell that they are picky about what they buy because everything was in very good condition. I ended up falling in love with a pair of brown and white oxfords. They were only 26 dollars and were in fabulous condition! I was tickled pink with my new purchase, and I might also add that there is a boy that works there who is a FOXXXXX.

This place is lucky they have the best location, because if they had to survive on quality of food or service, they fail on both! One time I went there and was able to get seating fairly quickly. It was a gorgeous day, and the server handed us the menu which looked extremely tasty. I ordered kobe beef skewers and a beer. They brew their own beer and I had gotten the wheat beer which was nice and light for the hot day. However, the food took forever to come out, and then when it did finally come out, it was cold. $14 dollars for two small skewers is a bit steep and I expect that my food be cooked properly. When I asked the server to reheat it, she brought it back warm....on one side! clearly it was too much effort to turn the skewer or check if it was warmed all the way through. I didn't even bother complaining, because I was starving to death. They were incredibly tough and bland despite being Kobe beef.

The second time I went, I had biked with a friend to the beach and it was a sweltering day. The place was packed and we found a spot on the grass. However, the staff was sparse and after 20 minutes of waiting for someone to come up to us, we decided we should just walk up to the bar and get our drinks ourselves since we didn't plan on eating. We waited, and waited...while a huge line formed behind us. The two bartenders didn't even bat an eye at anyone to address the situation and let them know that they were trying to help us. 45 minutes roll by and my friend is standing on one side of the bar. The bartender that was free continued to ignore him and then all of a sudden someone moves, a spot opens up a foot and a half away directly in front of her and this guy comes in from nowhere despite there being a line of 15 people and she serves him! I was so incredibly pissed I was ready to leave. My friend insisted we stay based simply on principle because we had already waited so long. Finally we got our drinks and we chugged them, and swore to never return.

I came here for the all you can eat lunch buffet and boy was I surprised! Indian food is nice, but I honestly never get as excited about it as I do things like sushi, or Vietnamese food. The lunch buffet was not crowded, the restaurant was very clean and the staff was really friendly. They put the food in these lovely urns rather than the typical buffet rectangular heated platters so it just had a nicer presentation. The food looked very freshly prepared, and my mouth watered at the sight of everything. I had the vegetarian biyrani, chicken tikka masala, mushroom curry, and chicken tandoori. It was so good that I had two full plates. The mushroom dish was by far my favorite. I don't really consider Philly the center of ethnic cuisine, but If I lived in Philly I would definitely come here often.

Yelp Elite Event @ Eastside West

Category: Local Flavor
Neighborhood: Marina/Cow Hollow

I am usually a law abiding citizen on most days. However, get me to a yelp event and I start becoming a klepto of sorts. I mean Yelp leaves all these goodies on the tables and I must admit, I take more than my fair share...and then my mind starts to think, "what else could I get away with?"  However I never actually do steal anything that isn't meant to be taken although I would have walked away with a cactus from the table had my friend said the magic word....but we both got too drunk to remember. Thank god for that, because it was a thin tote and I don't think drunk + cactus = good times.

The yelp event was just as good as I could hope for. My partner in crime Jessica came with me, and we mingled with some peeps, but usually our main focus is to sit right by the food and work out some kind of scheme to get as many drinks in our system as possible. Due to the high demand at the bar, we resorted to double fisting drinks.  And somehow I ended up at a yelp elite event chugging smuggled in PBR out of the can. F*** being classy!

Jessica and I were a bit bummed about not getting any oysters at the beginning but then of course we had another yelper come and save the day by bringing us some oysters and alerting us to a fresh batch laid out on the table. Love you Donna H! Overall, just another awesome yelp event.
