captain crunch french toast is going to kick your diabetes in the butt, but don't worry, there are plenty of delicious and satisfying options at BMC. I had the signature french toast and their crab/egg/hash plate and both did not disappoint at all. their giant biscuits and homemade gravy is enormous and a must-eat for those craving some sausage gravy and fluffy biscuit. would go again, but go early - otherwise you may have to wait. they can only seat about 40 people (+4 at the bar) at a time. also, be patient with the wait staff if you show up at 3am :)

I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Lin and he has been one of the most caring and intelligent PTs I've ever met. His sports background gives him a great understanding for sports-related injury and his interest in traditional and cutting-edge care makes him an ideal provider for patients young and old. I would highly recommend him for anyone who needs physical therapy (or help on their baseball swing!)

Unique Thrift Store

not only is it near my home, it is a great place to browse for thrift store finds. i think it's a great thrift store because the area donating to Unique is a little more well off. I have found a pretty nice wooden bench, golf clubs, cooler bags, kitchen items, and the occasional home decoration there which would have otherwise cost many times more.

parking is kind of a pain, so go on the weekdays if you can, tends to be better than the weekends.

not sure why other people complain so much about this place. it is one of the cleaner, well-organized thrift stores i've been to.

Mussel Bar

Located where the old Leviathan (sp?) restaurant used to be, Mussel Bar has a menu with a foundation of mussels. get there early if you want to eat at a reasonable hour - i went on a thursday night about 7pm and didn't sit down till 8. The restaurant is set up really well with the large accomodating bar on the left side and the dining room to the right. as soon as you get into the restaurant you'll notice the servers bringing giant pans with glass lids full of steaming mussels to the tables.

Impressions:
pretty decent prices for mussels ($15-23 depending on how fancy)
good portion size, serving in the pan is excellent as i don't like to waste the brothy goodness
dipping bread was delicious artisan style and airy
Mussel Bar offers all kinds of combinations of mussels. i got a goat cheese and pear i think - it was totally worth it and tasty.

I did not try the other menu options, but i was thoroughly impressed with the mussels menu. i'd try it again!

New York Cake & Baking Supplies

if you walk into this place, do not expect Williams Sonoma service. this is essentially a miniature warehouse of baking and cake supplies. You go find it yourself. if you're looking for advice or anything, go home and look it up, then come back here to go buy it. they have everything you could imagine - all kinds of baking molds, chocolate molds, a whole aisle of sprinkles and cupcake papers. they have Valrhona chocolate by the brick, royal icing by the gallon tub, and tons of cake bases and cookie cutter rings. The place where i think they really shine is their macrogastronomy supplies - xantham gum, carnauba wax, citric acid, and a bunch of others are readily available. This place is a great place to gather the same stuff the pros use, and also get those weird hard-to-find items you can't get at W&S. If you want customer service, go to the mall. This place is for people who know what they need.

Everyone says it for a reason, and i agree: the best pizza in new york. Being that it is one of the last remaining coal brick oven pizzas, it is also of historical significance. These guys make the best, thin, crispy crust pizza with delicious toppings that are top notch. The lines are insane, but well worth it. i usually get the regular, which has fresh mozzarella slices and basil on top. They do not do any single slice sales anymore (shame). this is my favorite pizza ever - every few times i go up to new york, i'll have to feed my craving for perfect pizza by going here.

You want cigars? coffee? hookah? tea? snacks? This place has it all. in addition to its free wi-fi and the comfy bench seats that face the opened full-length windows. It does not smell like a hookah bar - but then again the windows were open each time i went there. the staff was helpful in choosing a tea and hookah flavor - and otherwise didn't really bother me as i did some work and caught up on my emails. Located in downtown SD, it is a perfect stopover before or after the bars.

i went to Balboa Park because i wanted to photograph the botannical gardens. little did i know i'd spend most my time wandering around the old spanish-style buildings taking architectural photos. This is a great place to catch museums and to relax. This place is a photographer's dream - with the mirror-like lotus pool, the open-air botannical garden building, and all the paths and buildings - this is a great spot to get your nature photography on, or to even bring a model to shoot portraits all day.

Adour

This is a reivew for their Macarons-A-Porter only.

I have yet to try the Adour restaurant yet, but i plan on it!

These are macarons you're buying. French-style Macarons, not macaroons, which can range from scottish to turkish styles. French macarons have a couple characteristic features such as the egg-shell-like crust that is very light and airy. Two of these mini-cakes sandwich some kind of filling of jam, ganache, or buttercream, or anything else for that matter.

These macarons-a-porter from Adour are almost perfect. The batch i received didn't quite have as egg-shell-crispy crust as i've had before. This could be a combination of things like ambient humidity, temperature change from the refrigerator it was being stored at to the time i ate it, etc. But the flavor and texture (except the crust) was spot on. The raspberry and pistachio flavors i had were delicious. I could eat a whole box in one sitting.

These macarons are the kinds of new dessert DC is looking for. This is the confection that could steal the "cupcake trend" thunder. They're portable, they pack huge flavor, and they can help redefine some pre-conceived notions of the french macaron (not to be confused with a scottish or turkish macaroon).

Try a box. for $20, you get 12 macarons that are between 2-3 seasonal flavors. You won't regret it!

Surfari Surf School

I went to San Diego several months ago and had a free day which i wanted to learn to surf. The instructor i was paired up with (Greg or Craig?) was really cool in helping me learn how to surf. They set me up with a wetsuit and a 9 ft board and we went to the beach. The water does not warm up at all, so the wetsuit was necessary. And you should definitely eat a little something beforehand as surfing gets tiring. Greg was really cool with adapting the lesson to my skill level. i had never surfed before, but i think just being relatively athletic helped a lot. we got out in the water, and i followed his instructions and stood up on the first wave i caught. Awesome.

Greg was really cool about teach me how to (simply) read the waves to know which one was a good one to catch. After a while, i started getting tired and was really slow in popping up - ended up only standing up one more time before i had to go.

would definitely try them again. call ahead to make reservations!
