Want a tripple espresso?  They won't give it to you.  Want an espresso to go?  They won't give it to you.  Want them to insist on giving you an Americano (while insisting that you're too stupid to know what an Americano is) instead of what you actually ordered? OK.  That one they'll do.

Great coffee.  Pompous rules.   As a coffee geek, I was excited to have a decent coffee place in the neighborhood.  But this place literally refuses to fulfill my order, so I'll have to look elsewhere.

Note:  The staff is not rude, nor incompetent.  They're just oddly proud to drive away customers whose orders they deem unworthy of their business.

I finally got around to having dinner here.  It's fantastic.  The sweetbreads are outstanding.  Everything is done well, but it's so expensive.  Dinner for two + wine + desert + tip = $250.  Ouch!

I've only been here for brunch, and I can imagine dinner being an entirely different situation, but I couldn't figure out why I was paying a fortune for a blatantly ordinary brunch that can be found at any number of eateries in the area.

Ugh.  These guys are still the worst!  The only reason to go to J&R is impatience.  You only show up there if you need it today!  To save your sanity, just go to B&H or even Best Buy if you need it that bad.  Or order from NewEgg.  Their deliveries frequently make it to NYC within 24 hours of ordering.

These guys have the worst customer service I've ever experienced  The employees of this store have no idea what they're doing.  They don't know where anything is located.  And it's not just that they *can't* help you...it's that that they *won't* even try.  I usually avoid store clerks like the plague, but J & R has such a confusing layout that you absolutely need a human being to help you.  And anyone who works there is apparently not paid enough to even acknowledge your existence when you talk directly to them.  This has been the case for the last 7 years that I've been stupid enough to patronize them.

That said, it's a nearly unavoidable experience if you're looking to make certain purchases in downtown NYC.

Great food.  But this place is *way too loud*.  This is a tiny little place, so why is it louder than most bars I go to?  As much as I'd prefer to eat Greek here, I can't even hear myself think.

What's that?  I sound like a grumpy old man?  It's true, I suppose.  But only because I love the food and wish I could consume it in peace.

The whole staff is extremely helpful and friendly.  The food is decent.  The fried chicken is stellar!  The signature drinks are well made, if overpriced.  I leave here happy every time.

I've been here twice and our table full of opinionated eaters as thoroughly happy both times.  This place gives no meaning to no-frills and requires you to BYOB.  But there's nothing wrong with that.  Order anything on the menu, and you'll be happy.

It's a tight squeeze, but it's worth it.

I understand where some of these reviews are coming from, re: service.  That was our first impression as well.  But I think it's fair to say that the service is more odd than it is rude.  Once we were seated, we were taken care of.  The waiter (who I believe is the owner) even used his iPhone to light our cheese plate as he described it.

We'll definitely go back again.

This is probably my favorite restaurant in the city.  The menu is simple, the staff is genuinely friendly and the environment is comforting.  My wife and I eat here regularly and we're never disappointed.  The iceberg wedge is a guilty pleasure, the bread pudding is perfection and the "big dishes" are always prepared with with great flavors and great care.

I always feel at home in this place, which I can say about very few eateries I frequent.   And I always leave very full and very satisfied.
