AVOID THIS PLACE! AVOID!

I wish I had read the reviews before I brought my Hugo Boss suit to these people! I had a small coffee stain on the jacket, bring it in to be cleaned and the light blue stitching of my $500 is now gone from the area they cleaned. When pressed they then said it was Boss' fault, then said the stitches weren't missing, then said I knew about it. When asked to make good, they basically said it wasn't their responsibility.

If you care about your clothes avoid this place!

Sweet Afton

There is a lot right with Little Afton, the décor, the ambiance, the staff, and the pickles... good god those Brooklyn pickles! But there are also a few things amiss. The place is pricier than most, there were no buy backs after almost 3 hours of drinking, and the burger is expensive and too salty for my tastes. For $8 that burger should be perfect and come with a handful of fries.

In fact all the food at Sweet Afton seemed a little stodgy. Small portions and a lack of accompaniment. Food here just seems a little plain for the price. By the end of the night I was a little surprised by the bill. It was 10-20% higher than I expected.

That being said it's a great place. I liked it a lot. I would take friends here and dates... I'm just not going to become a regular.

Juan Valdez Cafe

There is a certain sanctity of a coffee shop. It sells coffee for exorbitant prices to make you feel, for that instant, like that classy person you see on the cover of Esquire magazine.

And thus the contract between coffee shop and patron was formed.

Juan Valdez Café, besides the impressive open ceilings has bad coffee, a crazily cramped interior (you have too many chairs on top of each other), and the wifi and bathroom access being regulated by your receipt? come on.

I am all for the democratizing of bathroom privileges to patrons only, but here is the rub, after you use your bathroom code, it's no longer valid. I call bullshit - if I could get into that bathroom.

I just paid you for a overpriced cup of coffee, you better (as f) give me access to your bathroom as long as I feel fit or I will poop in your creamers... and I will people.

Final word. Juan is the loneliest number you'll ever do. Two can be as bad as one, but it doesn't matter because your bathroom code won't work a second time.

Momofuku Milk Bar

"IT'S SO CRAZY! A MILK BAR ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE!" The cries go out into the beer laden nights as sweaty hipsters, on their way back to Williamsburg converted lofts, and dismayed 30 somethings, on their way back to their Netflix envelopes full of documentaries, stand agawk in from the menu boards. Their mouths slowly sounding out odd pies, softserve ice cream, and loaves of bread.

Yes, the menu is that crazy people. If you want something sweet? Well you are getting of sea salt on that. You want something salty? Well you get a piece of doughnut. You want bread? We baked meat in it.

What I'm saying is, this place likes to screw with you, it's kind of their mission. Lucky for you they also want you to come back, so it's all pretty good. The flavors are snappy and the portions are big... trust me fatso, share your piece of pie, it's dense.

What I'm saying is, yes, it's a little bullshit, BUT it has enough talent behind the bullshit to make you stop and enjoy your sweaty little summer life in the big city.

PS - I have never had their milk before. but their cereal milk sounds pretty great.

Great. Normally I would run screaming from such idiotic concepts as fusion dinning, but I have to say I really enjoyed Matilda. The guacamole with Basil was awesome. I had a pasta dish that was just the right  size and tasty. It's a little pricy for a place that doesn't accept credit cards. All in all a good experience.

Really great breakfast sandwiches and fast service. I had a smoothy which was pretty great, while looking at the ocean and hobos. Ahhhh California.

Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant

I've been to Los Amigos a couple of times and normally I've been fairly happy, even reccomnding it to friends. NO MORE. Last Sunday I went and had some of the worse Mexican food I have ever experienced. The Steak fajitas were in a soup of liquified green pepper and onion, essentially boiling the steak to shoe leather. The seafood fajitas mere similarly terrible. This is not how you cook Mexican food.

The service was also terrible and the waitress really paid no attention to us. Avoid this place at all costs.

Mustang Harry's

Categories: American (Traditional), Irish
Neighborhoods: Chelsea, Midtown West

Update - 3/23/2009
So I went back to Mustang Harry's on  St. Patty's day and boy did I regret that decision. If I was on the fence before about Mustang Harry let me assure you STAY AWAY! They jacked up their prices for St. Pats - $8 Sam adams $9 Stellas. The food was terrible as per usual. I got a burger and it was god awful.

Do yourself a favor and walk to the next block. The drunks are 33% cheaper and the people who own the place are 55% less douchier!

BOO Mustang Harry!

I would never have normally gone to this place on my own accord, by my improv school classrooms (Upright Citizen's Brigade) iare directly across the street. It's a pretty convenient place for drinks after class. The interior is done in tasteful yuppie undertones, with accents of businessman/woman, and as a young hipster, I stuck out like a sore, under-dressed, thumb.

The beers are standard Manhattan price and the food is slightly too expensive, but in keeping with the proximity to MSG. I would not recommend the crab cakes as they were mostly filler, and way too spicy to taste the crab.

All in all, I would never go back under my own power, but as I study near by, I fear I will have to revisit this location from time to time.

Oddity: There is a glass both at the end of the bar for private dinners which is really odd. It's not particularly private and folks eating in it look like they're on display. Maybe this is a usual detail in upscale dinning establishments, but it seems weird to eat your dinner in a shark cage.

Grand Sichuan International - Chelsea

This might have been the best Chinese food I have had in New York City is 10 years. The food was well seasoned using real flavors like Chinese 5 spice and star anise. The spicy is genuinely spicy and the flavors are not overly Americanized. If you are looking for a quality Chinese restaurant, this is the place to go.

As a note, the soup dumplings are good, but Shanghai Café's are better. However the rest of the food beats Shanghai Café in flavor.

Empanada Joe's - CLOSED

Category: Latin American
Neighborhood: Flatiron

3.0 star rating

This new empanadary is good, but has two major downfalls. One the sides - they are horrible. I am taking off a star and a half for them. Cold beans?! Cold rice?! Who thought all cold sides was a good idea? It's horrible. Seriously. They should either fix them or remove them all together.

The last problem is some of the empanadas need work. The caprese? tomatoes and mozzarella is a little gross.

Other than that it was a pretty good experience. The vegi empanada was the clear winner. It is truly the item to get.
