Seriously?  This is the Birmingham version of Thai food?  Overly sweet, not nearly spicy enough and it felt like was heavily Americanized.  Maybe I'm spoiled by other Thai restaurants in other cities, but I really feel like this place is pasable.  Even the sushi is a little below average.

Tucked into a shopping center next to the Piggly Wiggly you can find this delightful little gem.  Los Amigos is a great little location for lunch or for happy hour.  Their salsa is to-die for and one could easily come in and stuff their face for hrs with chips and that salsa.  They have some solid margarita specials, and the food is above average.

All in all a great little Mexican joint.

The Golden Rule is really a pretty basic bbq joint.  I was underimpressed by their overly sweet sauces and relatively small portions.  There are better choices for BBQ in Birmingham.

Screw it anyway I'm gonna tell!  PDT is hidden behind the phone booth at Crifdogs.  It is a "speakeasy" style bar with very tight confines, interesting old-school based libations, and extremely high prices.

Realistically you have to know someone to get in or you need to come early on a Monday.  It's fun, it's different, and unfortunately it is probably now outdated.

Cute little gourmet market which I must admit I was shocked to discover in Birmingham.  They offer up some fantastic lunch specials, an impressive selection of beer and wine, and an extraordinarily friendly environment.  Whether you eat in (they have both indoor and outdoor seating) or take out it is a good choice even though it is a little pricey.

Late night in the East Village and desperately in need of something to fill the void in your belly?  Crawl into Veselka and rediscover the warming comfort of Eastern Europe.  The service is friendly, the food is simple and delicious, the prices are a little high.

Veselka is the cure for the common diner.

One of the best Indian restaurants I've ever experienced!  The decor is very original and has the feel of a late 90's Bollywood romance ... very classic, perhaps a little campy, but happily so.

The service was top notch and possibly the friendliest I've ever experienced in NYC.  I think our waitress genuinely felt bad about interupting us when she explained each course.

Now the food ... $31 for all you can eat Gujarati Vegetarian.  No, not buffet, but platters of food brought out to you.  Think 18 different items to choose from, almost all of which are FABULOUS.  And after you have stuffed yourself so full you think you may explode they bring you desert.

Vatan, I love you.  One small critique ... use glasses for water instead of the metal cups.  They make the water taste metallic and bad.

Jim N Nicks BBQ

Category: Barbeque

4 star rating

I had a vicious hunger for BBQ and more than once I had walked past Jim N Nicks in 5 Points.  Of course Birmingham has no shortage of BBQ joints.  It seems the Alabama equivalent of peanut butter n jelly.  This is not a bad or wrong thing.  So far Jim N Nick's is the best example of Alabama BBQ which I have discovered.

Come in, sit your butt down and order up some delicious BBQ.  At Jim N Nick's the operative word is sweet.  Everything is sweet.  Whether you are talking about the divine sweet tea, the immaculate sweet corn muffins which come with every meal, or the syrupy sweet BBQ, this place may be a diabetic's nightmare.

I still prefer Texas BBQ, and the service was a little slow, but for an easy lunch in Birmingham a loaded baked potato here is a sure winner.

Gazuza

Welcome to Gazuza, yet another haunt of the self-obsessed, image junkie DC yuppie. Be careful where you step or your soul may be sucked out by one of the Euro-succubi lingering near the bar.

Gazuza was the place we would go when we knew that the evening was beyond saving. There was no merit in pretending that we were doing anything short of stumbling from bar to bar in search of a pure wisdom a man in his young 20's strives to discover, a man in his late 20's believes he possesses, and a man in his 30's knows never existed.

If you're in Gazuza odds are you are convinced of your own worth to the universe. You are so convinced of it that you've come to scam on young, pretty Euro girls looking to have you buy them overpriced fancy drinks with the promise that if you demonstrate enough wealth you too can spin the venereal disease wheel in her bedroom. It tends to be dark, loud (I'm talking jet engines taking off loud), and expensive here.

They do sell hookahs though.

Welcome to the Philadelphia Airport.  I hope you brought a book.  A long book.  A long, interesting book. Preferable one you just started.  You will be here a very long time.  Thankfully it is clean and there are a reasonable number of eateries.  Please enjoy your stay.
